    School News to Know
    Hello SES Community,
What a wonderful first quarter we’ve had. Our students (and families, in some cases) have:
    • Started kindergarten
    • Demonstrated at a climate strike
    • Went to and returned from a week at Outdoor School
    • Danced at a first Middle School dance
    • Experienced our community through field studies at Laurelhurst, Oxbow, OMSI, Tryon Creek, the Zoo, Bull Run Watershed (to name a few!)
Our incredibly supportive PTSA and parent community have:
    • Raised funds (and fun!) at our Run/Walk/Move
    • Brought together the neighborhood at the Harvest Fair
    • Dined for our schools through restaurant fundraisers (Char, Renata, Pastini, Straight from NY…)
    • Beautified our school at Garden Day
    • And spoiled us rotten with free coffee at Stumptown the first 2 weeks of school!
We thank you all for helping us make Sunnyside a great place to work, and teach your students each day. We look forward to Quarter 2!
    Amy and Alix

Families Helping Families: The Annual SES Circle of Giving (NEW)
Families interested in receiving help this holiday season are invited to participate in our annual holiday program, the SES Circle of Giving. Through the Circle of Giving families can request specific gifts they would like for their children, as well as assistance with a holiday meal. If you are interested, please fill out the google form here.
There are also hard copies of this form located in the main office. Hard copy forms can be dropped off in the drop box in the main office or given to your student's teacher.
All submissions must be received by Monday, December 9th. Gifts will be delivered on Thursday and Friday, December 19th and 20th, or can be picked up in the SES office on those dates.
This is an annual event for us. We handle gift giving with discretion and all names remain confidential. Our goal is to assist families who would otherwise have difficulty during this holiday season.
If you have further questions, please contact Ashley Bevan in the counseling office.
    Student Designed School T-Shirts (NEW)
Our school t-shirts are back in stock and for sale! They are available in Youth Sizes S-XL (Gray or Mauve) and Adult Sizes S-2XL (Gray, Green, or Olive). Shirts are $15 and all proceeds benefit the Sunnyside Go Fund. They can be purchased through the office or periodically during dismissal throughout the coming weeks.
Final Call for Class Photo Orders (NEW)
Class photos are available for order until November 15th! We are hoping to send them home in December before Winter Break begins.
Families are welcome to issue payment using the following SchoolPay link(s) or by bringing cash or check to the school office. The best part ~ ALL PROCEEDS WILL BENEFIT SUNNYSIDE'S GO FUND!
    Anti-Racist Reading and Resources (NEW)
An article about civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hammer urges us to "get up and try to do something."
Middle School Dance 11/8/19 - Chaperones Needed
Our second middle school dance is coming up on Friday, November 8 from 6:30-8:30 pm. For the dance to happen, we will need chaperones! Sign up here to chaperone or bring snacks. Chaperones should register in the new Volunteer & Visitor sign-in system (Raptor) and complete a background screen (state issued photo ID required) in the SES office if you have not already done so.
The dance starts promptly at 6:30 and ends at 8:30—please make sure students have plans to arrive and leave at these precise times. Permission slips will come home a few days before the event. We request a $5 donation to cover the cost of the dance, but no child will be turned away for lack of funds.
    News from SESPTSA (NEW)
    • SES Fundraiser at Teote
SES favorite, Teote (owned and operated by Sunnyside families), is inviting the SES community to dine in or take out 11am-10pm Tuesday, November 5, with 20% of the day's proceeds going to the SES PTSA. Come enjoy delicious (and gluten-free) Latin American food. Teote is located at 1615 SE 12th Ave, just south of Hawthorne. Check out the menu before you visit. You can also call in a take-out order at 971-888-5281.

    • THANK YOU from the Harvest Fair
Another wonderful autumn celebration in the books! Thank you to everyone who volunteered in any capacity to make this big event a success. The SES community filled 130 volunteer roles - wow! From the taco servers to the cider pressers to the sausage grillers to the potato farmers to the face painters to the ticket takers to all the many roles in between...your generosity is noticed and appreciated. And if your contribution was to come – and put all those tickets to good use – thank you, too! We hope you had a great evening. SES Staff: thank you. The good-will generated for your dunk tank service must surely be gigantic. And, we greatly appreciate all other help you gave around the school to this PTSA event. If you have any questions or comments about Harvest Fair, please reach out to Steph at stephbarnhart1@gmail.com. See you next October!

    • Order PIES and Fruit Online for the GO Fund!
A group of 8th graders is running this pie fundraiser for Catalina. We are selling the pies at the same cost as they are at New Seasons or Whole Foods except we get them at cost. So over 30% of the money from each pie sold supports our class trip to Catalina! Everybody wins!

Pies must be ordered by next Wednesday, November 6. They will be delivered on November 20—plan to pick them up that afternoon. Pies are non-GMO certified and handmade near Salem. Order all your pies for all the upcoming holidays here.

Eat pie, do good stuff. Thank you!

    • After School Classes at SES
A volunteer has put together a list of all the after-school class currently offered at Sunnyside—you can see the list on the SES PTSA website under the Monthly Info sub menu called After School Activities or with a direct link to the list here. The list will be updated in December with classes starting in January. If you know of a class that should be on the list, please email her at kristing@gmail.com.
