    School News to Know (NEW)
    Dear Families,
Thank you for another successful (and busy!) week here at SES!
Our staff is looking ahead to fall conferences, most of them taking place on November 25th and 26th. Conferences here at Sunnyside are intended to deepen the partnership between home and school on behalf of your student. At our staff meeting Tuesday, our staff will take some time to think about the structure, setting and content of our conferences. We will work together as a staff to think about ways to offer responsive conferences, ones that meet the needs of your family, center your child in the conversation even if they are not physically present, and invite your perspective into the room in the way that best meets your needs.
Enjoy the weekend, and thank you for being part of this community.
    —Alix and Amy

Come Visit the Circle of Giving ❄ (NEW)
The Circle of Giving is now out! It is located in the front hallway, across from the office and next to the cafeteria. The Circle of Giving display features tags for gifts, gift cards (open amount), and a few opportunities to contribute cash to families’ Portland General Electric account. If you are able, please consider choosing a tag to participate in the Circle of Giving. Families have until Friday, December 13th to bring items to the office so that they can be distributed December 19-20th.
The display also features forms to request items. Hard copies of request forms can be dropped off in the main office or given to your student's teacher. Item requests can also be made by filling out the online Google form here. All request forms must be received by Monday, December 9th. The Circle of Giving is a confidential process; donors will only learn the desired gift of your recipient and age/gender/size if applicable.
If you have further questions, please contact Ashley Bevan in the counseling office.
Last Day for Class Photo Orders (NEW)
Class photos orders end today, November 15th. We are hoping to send them home in December before Winter Break begins. To purchase a class photo, please follow the links below:
Lost and Found to be Donated (NEW)
The Lost and Found will be donated to the PTA Clothing Closet at the end of conferences next week. Please check for any missing items before Fall Break begins on 11/27/19. The rack and shelf have been relocated to the main hallway across from the gym for easier access. In the future, the Lost and Found will be donated monthly to prevent an overflow. Please check it often for missing or lost items.
    UNICEF Funds Raised (NEW)
Thank you to families that were able to participate in our annual UNICEF Fundraiser. Fifth Grade collected $758.00! Please visit the UNICEF website to learn more about their work.
Volunteers Wanted: Teach a Mini-Class at SES
For many years it has been a tradition in the SES middle school to invite parents, guardians, and community members to teach mini-classes. This is a time when we draw on the expertise and interests of our school community to teach an enrichment course to our middle school students who are excited and passionate about the topic. We've had parents from all grade levels offer to teach courses. Some examples of past classes are: woodworking, sewing, computer programming, trail running, history of radio, purse/wallet making, poetry, watercolor, yoga, chess and card games, and movie making.
This year our mini-classes will take place on two days:
    • Wednesday, December 18 from 12:05-3:15 and
    • Thursday, December 19, from 9:30am-2:55pm, with a lunch break from 11:30am-12pm (including clean up!)
We look forward to providing our students with a range of offerings to choose from. If you are available, but undecided on what class to teach, we can help. If you have a class in mind, we look forward to learning what your class will be. We are happy to welcome you in whatever capacity your busy life allows.
    Water Bottle Ask
The cone cups by the water jugs are not recyclable. We’d like to reduce/eliminate our dependence on them. Please encourage students to bring and use water bottles at school. Thank you.
    Anti-Racist Reading and Resources (NEW)
Though this podcast is for teachers, teachers come in all forms. Take a listen at the important reminder that, as we near Thanksgiving, we need to vet the resources and stories we teach students, and the harm wrong information can do.

    • Wreath Order Deadline Extended! Due 11/30/19
Buying wreaths from Mujeres Progresistas supports migrant farmworking families to support themselves through the winter months when harvests are low. By purchasing these beautiful wreaths you are supporting their business and our school. In addition, middle schoolers have an opportunity to go to Woodburn to meet the families, learn to make wreaths, practice Spanish and eat delicious food! Overall, this project is true service-learning where all parties learn and grow and gain. Please support this amazing business and our school community! Let's bring our total from 50 to 150!!! Muchisimas Gracias! Put your order in by November 30th!
