    School News (NEW)
It’s February, and at Sunnyside we are honoring the Lunar New Year and Black History Month by integrating the richness of multicultural perspectives and valuing the vast experiences and viewpoints alive in our school year around. Our teachers work in teams to plan lessons, units, and materials that highlight those communities whose voices have been historically underrepresented in curriculum. To propel this mission, our classrooms and school library contain books and resources that work to counteract the historically white narrative. Please, reach out to your studentś teacher to ask how he/she/they are honoring multiple perspectives through a culturally relevant curriculum.
Black Americans, both historical and contemporary, have enriched our cultural, political, and social tapestries. These influential people (from Ruby Bridges, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Rose Parks to John Lewis, Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, Opal Tometi, and Angela Davis) have offered the American landscape fresh and crucial perspectives. That said, our very own student-teacher, Joseph Blake, is paving the way for local leaders to take action. Check out his article in The Willamette Week, “Three Portlanders Charting New Possibilities for Black People, Including Journeys Into Nature,” We’re proud of you, Joseph!!
    Be well, Sunnyside,
    Alix and Eryn

    Websites to Know

To help keep things working smoothly, here are some gentle reminders from the front office:

    • Have your students wear coats and bring an extra change of clothes.

    • Do not park in no-parking zones or crosswalks.

    • Walk or carry anything wheeled while on school grounds.

    • Volunteer during lunch to help keep kids distanced.

    • Do not idle your car engine while waiting to pick up students.

    • Come to the front door and buzz if your student arrives late or leaves early.

Welcome Jenny Thomas, Our “new” School Secretary (NEW)
Please extend a warm welcome to our new school secretary, Jenny Thomas! Though not new to Sunnyside, Jenny has joined the office team … and we’re thrilled! Please give her a wave next time you’re in the office.

Sunday, February 20, 9am-12pm: Electronic Recycling Event (NEW)
Cecilia Haas and Clayton Williams with Inhabit Real Estate invite you to a complimentary Electronic Recycling Event on Sunday, February 20th from 9am to 12pm in front of Sunnyside Environmental School at the cob bench.

According to The Global E-waste Monitor, there was a record 53.6 million metric tons of electronic waste generated in 2020. Let’s do our part in improving e-waste collection and recycling practices, so these secondary raw materials can be made readily available to re-enter the manufacturing process.

Let’s clean out our basements and get that e-waste recycled!

Items accepted: desktops, laptops, servers, monitors, accessories, phones, tablets, telecom, musical instruments, tools, batteries, cables/wires, video games, small appliances such as microwaves, coffee makers, etc. Scrap metal is also accepted.

Any device containing data will have its data destroyed within 1 business day, and you can obtain a signed certificate of date destruction by email.

If you cannot attend the event on February 20 at SES, there is one on Saturday, February 19, 12-2pm in the South lot of St. Philip Neri Church in Ladd's Addition.

Grades K-5 Report Card Update (UPDATED)
This year, term report cards for students in grades 3-5 will not include grades for all subject areas. (Some will be graded and some will not.) If you have a question about the report card process, please contact your student’s teachers.

In addition, in a move to be more environmentally friendly, Sunnyside will not print report cards for K-5 students unless you request one from your student's teacher. Families can access the report cards on ParentVue. A message blast will be sent when report cards are done and any families without ParentVue access can email Kieran Cannistra for assistance.

    PPS-Approved Flyers (NEW)
The following flyers have been approved by PPS to share:

Reminder: Bring appropriate shoes for P.E. days (NEW)
Please remember to send your student to school with appropriate footwear on the days they have P.E. We have quite a few students participating in bare feet, as we don’t have spare shoes for them to wear.

Reminder: No adult supervision after school (NEW)
Unless your student is enrolled in Campfire, there is no adult supervision after school. Unsupervised students should leave campus by 3:30pm.

    Safety Patrol Volunteers Needed
We are so excited to have our Safety Patrol in full swing, an important and traditional part of Sunnyside’s service learning curriculum for the 5th grade class. Students are showing up, taking care of equipment, and ensuring the safe crossings of hundreds of students and families each day. Their commitment and growth in responsibility is such an invaluable experience. The participating students will also be rewarded with a picnic or party of some kind at the end of the year…woohoo!

We do need up to 3 adult volunteers per shift to help monitor the three intersections we serve. The shifts are mornings from 8:20-8:45am and afternoons from 2:50-3:15pm. Responsibilities include ensuring students sign in, are placed at intersections safely (may need to shuffle if absences), and that cars aren’t blocking crosswalks. You will need to complete the standard PPS Background Check (if you haven’t already). Please sign up here

Thanks so much for considering helping out these amazing 5th graders who are working so diligently!

Read-a-thon is returning to the halls of SES
Read-a-thon is returning to Sunnyside Feb 22 - March 11 and we need volunteers!

Jobs include, but are not limited to:

    • Creating decorations for the hallways. I have many ideas or you can come up with your own based on our theme. This can be done at home.
    • Be in the school to assist with one or more "events" (help set up in classrooms for virtual speakers, hand out "prizes" for kids dressed up for dress up days, etc)
    • Call/email local businesses to ask for donations for prizes, gift cards, books (for our book bundle prizes) etc. This can be done at home.
    • Show up to decorate the school with signs/decorations people made on 17th, 18th or 21st (not sure yet which one will work best)

This is coming up fast so please sign up to help TODAY. Go to: https://forms.gle/BCyxN43pUrHktykS8 to sign up for a job (or email me leslieliothamer@gmail.com) and I'll email you back with specifics ASAP.

    Thanks a million,
    Leslie Lothamer
    (Violet 6th grade & Miles 4th grade)

    • WANTED: SES PTSA Volunteers
      Hello SES Community!

The SESPTSA has many positions opening up next year and we need YOU! The PTSA is a great way to get involved with the nuts and bolts of SES. While the main function of the PTSA is fundraising, the meetings are often discussions about how to support the school, staff and students, I personally have learned so much during my years on the board and encourage family members to get involved!

Virtual meetings are the third Wednesday of the month 6:30-8pm. We would love to welcome you!
