School News (NEW)
Dear Sunnyside Families,I cannot believe that we are already into March. This year is flying by and we are looking forward to many great events coming up in the spring.
Today we all received the communication from PPS that masks will be optional in schools starting March 12th. I know that families have many different comfort levels with this new direction and that after two years of a dramatically shifting landscape due to the pandemic, this is yet another shift. This is a district level policy that was made and every school in PPS will have masks optional. Please know that we respect each family's decision to mask or not as we move forward. We will not be enforcing mask usage at Sunnyside and as we find out more about what our new district and state mandated safety protocols will be, we will certainly share. Please continue to visit the district website for updates here.
Coming up at Sunnyside we are looking forward to some fun events. With morning meetings for middle school in full swing (thank you Sarah Wagner for leading), we are also getting ready for our first middle school dance on Thursday, April 7th. We are also looking forward to the 8th grade retreat on the 15th and 16th of March, during which our 8th graders will be at Camp Collins for the two days, and 6th and 7th graders will have an in-school retreat, as well.
In K-1 we have the identity parades coming up. The K-1 have been working on storylines celebrating differences and showing how there are unique and special people in the world. African drumming has been happening in 4th and 5th grades. And as you know the Read-A-Thon is in full swing. Nothing is cuter than all of us in our PJ's today.
We want to thank Sharon Bird for covering for Adrienne while she was out on maternity leave. Thank you, Sharon!
Since Jenny joined our front office as school secretary we are now in need of recess support from 11-1:30 every day. This is a paid position, so if you are interested, please email Eryn. Also, PPS is always needing paraprofessionals. Please email Eryn if you are interested in pursuing this field.
Thank you for all you do for our community. It has been lovely seeing many of your faces outside as school begins and ends each day. I'm looking forward to many days of sunshine and laughter as the year rolls on.
Best,
ErynUpcoming Dates (NEW)

Read-A-Thon (NEW)
The second week of Read-a-thon is over, one more week to go! This week brought an amazing author visit, pajama day and lots of reading. Thanks for your help and participation. If you haven't signed up to raise money online PLEASE DO. Go to MYBOOSTER.com and set up your student's fundraising page. It just takes a couple minutes. After you do you'll easily be able to share your student OR family's page via email, text or social media to help raise money for the school. Last year we raised $20,308. We are halfway there, let's get this done!
Booster.com does corporate matching too, so if you or a family member works for a company that offers that bonus PLEASE follow through to get your donation matched.
We had Cathy Camper visit on Thursday. She is a current 3-5 OBOB Author & former Multnomah County librarian! She gifted us with two presentations for our students. The first one she read her new picture book to our k-2 students and answered their questions afterwards. The second presentation was for 3-5 and she showed them her new (not even out yet) Lowriders graphic novel. She talked about being an author, the struggles, frustrations and joys. She answered the kids' questions with so much enthusiasm and thoughtfulness. It was one of the best author visits we ever had ... really.
I just added a few more of the Lowriders in Space books to the book sales page so now ALL 3 of these graphic novels are available for purchase and her new picture book (which she read to K-2 this morning). Please buy signed copies of her books (or any of our other guest authors) and support SES at the same time. 20% of book sales goes to us. (Thanks to Books With Pictures for the hook up.)

Join SES families at Westwind Family Camp Weekend of April 8-10
Want to spend a fun weekend at SES Family Camp on the coast? Sunnyside at Camp Westwind is a beloved Sunnyside family outing which ran for about 20 years prior to COVID-19. We would like to bring it back in 2022! We have booked the camp for April 8 - 10, 2022, which coincides with a no-school Friday. The camp has made adjustments to its weekend offerings to make the experience more COVID safe - which mostly amount to more time to relax and play. The cost per person is $110 includes lodging and 5 meals; food allergies / restrictions can be accommodated! Lodging at Westwind is in heated / lit cabins. Most accommodate 9 people. If you want to bring people you are "bubbled" with who aren't technically SES families, that's fine.
To make this trip work, we'll need some commitments to come. Contact gwen@parachutestrategies.com and let us know if you are in.
Loved this trip before and want to help? We could use some help getting the word out and with planning. Never been but are curious? Questions can be directed to gwen@parachutestrategies.com or 503-475-8529. Please note this event is not officially hosted by the SES PTSA.
