    Welcome to Quarter 4, Sunnyside Community!

    We started Quarter 3 by celebrating our kindergarteners with an Identity Float Parade and ended the quarter with a Middle School Dance (thank you, family volunteers!).

    We look forward to Architects in Schools, field studies, and promotions. We’re excited to see you all at Garden Day, Run/Walk/Move and Sunnyside Comeback Campaign.

    Websites to Know


    To help keep things working smoothly, here are some gentle reminders from the front office:

    • Have your students wear coats and bring an extra change of clothes.

    • Do not park in no-parking zones or crosswalks.

    • Walk or carry anything wheeled while on school grounds.

    • Volunteer during lunch to help keep kids distanced.

    • Do not idle your car engine while waiting to pick up students.

    • Come to the front door and buzz if your student arrives late or leaves early.


    Report card update (NEW)
    Report cards are complete and are available on ParentVUE. Middle School report cards have been sent to the printer, and will be mailed when ready. Elementary report cards are not being printed; if you would like a printed copy, please email Jenny at jethomas@pps.net and request that one be sent to you.

    Coming up next weekend, Saturday 4/23, 9am-1pm: GARDEN DAY (NEW)
    You may have seen the signs, but what does it mean??

    At Sunnyside, our students dig, plant, move, sweep, rake, and learn alongside snap peas and chickens, vegetables and worms, and do a lot of work to make it all grow. GARDEN DAY is a work party for the grown-ups to get involved. Make this an EARTH DAY family celebration! With extra hands we can take care of bigger projects and fix things that have broken.

    We need volunteers! Please help by bringing snacks to share, tools, wheelbarrows or just coming by to paint over some graffiti.

    Special projects like garden bed and bench design are ongoing and need volunteers as well. Contact Steph with questions: sunnysidesustainability@gmail.com.

    SES Walk Run Move — May 13! (NEW)
    The Walk Run Move, brought to you by SES PTSA in partnership with NW Dance Project, is one month away! On Friday, May 13, we will stretch, shuffle, shimmy or sprint our way around the school to raise some funds, pump our heart muscles, and have fun. Student, staff, and adult participation of all mobility levels are welcome to move with us! You’ll gather pledges and earn "move points" by walking, running, and dancing, all to support SES PTSA's goal to raise $12,000 for our treasured school programs.

    We need cheerers, chalk artists, laps counters, water fillers, corner safety people, and official finish line flag waiver and much more.

    Chicken help needed (NEW)
    We have a chicken who is having multiple serious issues; thankfully, we have a vet that is providing our poor chicken with needed care. If you are willing to donate toward vet costs, please donate via SchoolPay.


    PPS summer programming (NEW)
    Summer is coming and PPS will be offering a number of summer programming opportunities for students!

    Summer Acceleration Academy (SAA): SAA is a joyful learning opportunity to support development in key literacy and math skills, as well as STEAM learning and projects! Students are selected based on academic needs for this is a free, four week program. Invitations will be sent by email from PPS Summer Acceleration - be sure to check your email!

    Summer Enrichment and Extended Learning: A wide variety of exciting summer enrichment and extended learning opportunities will be offered throughout the summer in partnership with community organizations and Portland Public Schools’ Racial Equity and Social Justice (RESJ) Department. Keep an eye out for program information and registration coming in mid-May! 


    Fentanyl and teen substance use awareness night (NEW)
    Multnomah County, the Big Village Coalition and Portland Public Schools are partnering to host this virtual event on Tuesday April 19th from 7:00-8:30pm. Click here to register.


    PPS-Approved Fliers (NEW)
    The following fliers have been approved by PPS to share:


    8th grade speeches
    On Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays during middle school morning meeting, 8th graders are delivering these speeches, starting at 8:45am. PPS policy allows us to hold assemblies and events in person, and we're delighted to report that speeches will take place in person in the SES Auditorium. Also according to PPS policy, we cannot require people to wear masks or to social distance; please keep this in mind as you make your decision whether to attend in person.

    You can find the schedule of speeches here. The schedule does change, so please be sure to check for updates regularly if there's someone you really want to see. (Note: No one is allowed to exit or enter the auditorium when a speech is in progress; please show up on time.)


    Rising 6th graders: Informational session on April 20th
    We are excited to host you and your students to a preview of middle school at Sunnyside Environmental. Please join us on Wednesday April 20th for an afternoon of information about the middle school program, a tour of the middle school classrooms by current middle schoolers, and a chance to meet administration and counselors. The students are welcome to join us in the auditorium for a snack and a meet and greet with one another at 3:15. The informational session will start at 3:30.


    Calling all Sunnyside Families: Seeking auction "getaways"
    Thank you to all of the incredible parents who have donated already. We are seeking weekend getaway packages in Oregon and beyond. Do you have a family vacation home in the mountains or by the sea? Would you be willing to donate a mini-vacay to help raise funds for Sunnyside? We also need gift cards for restaurants, art, experiences, services (think dog walking or lawn mowing), wine, beer—-anything that you think another parent (or kiddo) may want to bid on!       Please join us at our virtual PTSA meeting on Wednesday, April 20 at 6:30pm. It's a great way to find out more about what the PTSA does and how you can get involved. Use this Google Meet link, or the link on our calendar at sesptsa.org.
    • PTSA needs volunteers
      The parents currently serving in SES PTSA positions of President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer will be ending their terms this year - we need new parents to step up and help run the PTSA! This is a vital part of our school that raises funds for art, gardening and field trips.
