    School News (NEW)
    Dear Sunnyside Families,
It finally feels like spring! It's Garden Day tomorrow at Sunnyside from 9-1 and we are hoping families can come and dig into the earth and celebrate Earth Day (TODAY) with each other. The gardens are looking beautiful this spring and as the weather gets warmer you will all see the seeds that have been sown start to bloom and grow.
We had our rising 6th grade open house this week and were excited to see so many future 6th graders and their families in attendance. We love the unique nature of a K-8 and look forward to ushering our 5th graders up into the middle school come fall.
Next year is just around the corner! Please outreach to any neighborhood future kindergarten families to get them registered! The sooner the better so have them contact Jenny in the front office!
We are excited to welcome Dowry Lamb to Sunnyside as a paraprofessional supporting students. She joined us late in the year but we already feel like she is part of the greater Sunnyside family!
8th grade speeches are cruising right along and we absolutely love them! What a gift to hear the 8th graders share about their experiences with Sunnyside and with life in general. We have learned so much from them and we really look forward to hearing them express themselves even more.
And since April is poetry month, I want to share with you the poem that I am sharing with classes when I work with them on learning to write poetry. They are such amazing poets, if you hear that they are learning poetry, have them share. https://www.best-poems.net/mary_oliver/spring.html
This poem is such a great reminder that with spring we have the opportunity to rise from the sleep of winter and shake it off while we wander into the meadows and brightness of springtime with our wonder and our beauty.
Thank you for all your support,

    Websites to Know

To help keep things working smoothly, here are some gentle reminders from the front office:

    • Have your students wear coats and bring an extra change of clothes.

    • Do not park in no-parking zones or crosswalks.

    • Walk or carry anything wheeled while on school grounds.

    • Volunteer during lunch to help keep kids distanced.

    • Do not idle your car engine while waiting to pick up students.

    • Come to the front door and buzz if your student arrives late or leaves early.

    PPS 2022-2023 district calendar (NEW)
The PPS calendar for next year has been approved and can be found here. The first day of school for grades 1-8 will be Tuesday, August 30, 2022. The first full day of Kindergarten will be Tuesday, September 6, 2022. The last day of school will be Tuesday, June 13, 2023.

Staff Appreciation Week, May 2 - 6 (NEW)
Sunnyside’s Staff Appreciation Week is right around the corner, Monday 5/2 to Friday 5/6.

Following are a few of the ways that we, as a community, will show our appreciation. (Details and links to come next week.)

    • Contributing towards your classroom teacher's Love Basket, coordinated by your Classroom Family Representatives.
    • Making a donation to our gift fund for non-classroom staff. This is one way we'll thank our custodians, counselors, front office staff, educational assistants, librarian, art teacher, etc. (Link to follow.)
    • Bring brunch goodies to nourish the staff. (Sign-up to come.)
    • Donate flowers and/or help create bouquets to gift to our staff.
    • Cover our sidewalks with chalk love notes.

This year, more than ever, we want to shower our staff with love & thanks. They have worked so hard, under pretty ridiculous circumstances. Let's make sure these lovely humans know how deeply we appreciate them. Please take a moment with your kid(s) to start planning how you'll express your gratitude.

Again, details to follow, but please reach out to Leonie with questions, simplyleonie@gmail.com.

Sunnyside Foundation Comeback Campaign: Laura Veirs house party tickets on sale (NEW)
The time has come! Tickets are NOW on sale for a very special SES Foundation fundraising event on May 14th: an intimate house party featuring live music from the exquisitely talented singer/songwriter (and Sunnyside parent!) Laura Veirs!

Festivities begin at 5:00 pm with hors d’oeuvres, wine from Scenic Valley Farms and ENSO Urban Winery, and an opening poem by Dr. Eryn Berg. Laura Veirs will take the living room stage at 6:00 pm for a live acoustic concert followed by more wine, yummy desserts, and time to make new friends in the Sunnyside community.

A Sunnyside family (Parents of Canyon, 5th, and Quill, 2nd) is excited to welcome you into their Salmon Street home for this sweet, fundraising event. It is adults-only, but all are welcome so please share with your music-loving, public school supporting friends. Tickets are $100 each and are limited! Sponsorship opportunities are available that give you business perks and entry into this event and our Wrap-Up party.

To reserve tickets to Laura Veirs, visit the SES Foundation Comeback Campaign event page. Our virtual auction starts May 14 after the Laura Veirs show, and continues through the end of our Toffee Club Wrap-Up Party. While you're getting tickets to both events, register to participate in the auction and you'll be ready to bid when we launch! Please watch for Sunnyside newsletters with more information. We are also still collecting donations to the auction!

Singer-songwriter Laura Veirs has produced 13 albums over 24 years, has toured internationally and has collaborated with luminaries such as kd lang, Neko Case, Sufjan Stevens, Jim James (of My Morning Jacket), The Decemberists, Bill Frisell and many more. Her work has been praised in the New York Times, The Guardian, The Independent, The Washington Post and many other publications. She also is a published author, podcaster, teacher and is a single mom to two Sunnyside children.

Looking forward to the best end-of-year fundraiser ever! Questions? Reach out to Heather de Michele at tanky34@gmail.com or Auburn Harrison at auburnharrison@gmail.com

    Thank you,
Heather and Auburn, Sunnyside Foundation Comeback Campaign Co-Chairs

    Lice (again) (NEW)
Our students love Sunnyside, and unfortunately LICE love all of those heads roaming around. Please remember to do weekly head checks for lice and nits, and remind your student(s) to not share hats or hooded tops/coats. It is advised to purchase a Nit Terminator comb (a one-time investment that will last forever, and can be used on multiple people with cleaning in between). Avoid chemicals and harsh ingredients, and comb through wet hair for the most effective removal. Email the school health captain Amy if you need support: aliber@mesd.k12.or.us.

    Report card update
Report cards are complete and are available on ParentVUE. Middle School report cards have been sent to the printer, and will be mailed when ready. Elementary report cards are not being printed; if you would like a printed copy, please email Jenny at jethomas@pps.net and request that one be sent to you.

Carrie and Sarah’s core classes gallery walk
Celebrate good times! As Q3 ends I want to share this Padlet of Carrie's and Sarah's Middle School Core classes' last gallery walk. Each student picked one artwork they were the proudest of from their sketchbook: https://padlet.com/ccorwin/xjwvcl0v17fsx6ml

    Sending positivity, Indigo

    Saturday 4/23, 9am-1pm: GARDEN DAY
You may have seen the signs, but what does it mean??

At Sunnyside, our students dig, plant, move, sweep, rake, and learn alongside snap peas and chickens, vegetables and worms, and do a lot of work to make it all grow. GARDEN DAY is a work party for the grown-ups to get involved. Make this an EARTH DAY family celebration! With extra hands we can take care of bigger projects and fix things that have broken.

We need volunteers! Please help by bringing snacks to share, tools, wheelbarrows or just coming by to paint over some graffiti.

Special projects like garden bed and bench design are ongoing and need volunteers as well. Contact Steph with questions: sunnysidesustainability@gmail.com.

    PPS summer programming
Summer is coming and PPS will be offering a number of summer programming opportunities for students!

Summer Enrichment and Extended Learning: A wide variety of exciting summer enrichment and extended learning opportunities will be offered throughout the summer in partnership with community organizations and Portland Public Schools’ Racial Equity and Social Justice (RESJ) Department. Keep an eye out for program information and registration coming in mid-May!

    PPS-Approved Fliers
The following fliers have been approved by PPS to share:

    8th grade speeches
On Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays during middle school morning meeting, 8th graders are delivering these speeches, starting at 8:45am. PPS policy allows us to hold assemblies and events in person, and we're delighted to report that speeches will take place in person in the SES Auditorium. Also according to PPS policy, we cannot require people to wear masks or to social distance; please keep this in mind as you make your decision whether to attend in person.

You can find the schedule of speeches here. The schedule does change, so please be sure to check for updates regularly if there's someone you really want to see. (Note: No one is allowed to exit or enter the auditorium when a speech is in progress; please show up on time.)

    PTSA News
Please check here for any new information from our incredibly supportive PTSA.

    • PTSA needs volunteers
The parents currently serving in SES PTSA positions of President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer will be ending their terms this year - we need new parents to step up and help run the PTSA! This is a vital part of our school that raises funds for art, gardening and field trips. If you're interested please reach out to our current President, Corby Watkins at corbywatkins@gmail.com, or come to an upcoming PTSA meeting.
