    School News (NEW)
    Hello Lovely Sunnyside Families,

We had a wonderful Garden Day last Saturday and spent the time working in the gardens, painting some of the doors and railways, sprucing up the outside, and redoing our polka dots and four square courts. It was really great to see our families digging their hands in the dirt with their kiddos. We appreciate your support in keeping our gardens healthy and looking beautiful.

Today marked Joseph's last day as Jeremy's student teacher and the class celebrated with pizza and a big thank you to both teachers for bringing such a great experience to 4th grade this year. Congrats to Joseph as he finishes his teaching license and graduates this spring.

As we mark the last day of April, May is right around the corner and we are fast forward into the end of the year. We celebrated poetry month by writing poems in classes and spending a lot of time outside enjoying the weather even though it has been a crazy spring.I still cannot believe we had a snow day in April!

As we end poetry month, I want to express thanks to you for your gift to us of your children. They have the spirit of creativity and expression already inside of them and each day that we work with them, we are lucky enough to see them blossom and grow!

Thank you for being our partners in this journey.
    Eryn & Alix

    Websites to Know

To help keep things working smoothly, here are some gentle reminders from the front office:

    • Have your students wear coats and bring an extra change of clothes.

    • Do not park in no-parking zones or crosswalks.

    • Walk or carry anything wheeled while on school grounds.

    • Volunteer during lunch to help keep kids distanced.

    • Do not idle your car engine while waiting to pick up students.

    • Come to the front door and buzz if your student arrives late or leaves early.

Staff Appreciation Week, May 2 - 6 (NEW)
Sunnyside's Staff Appreciation Week is NEXT week!

It is time to step up and honor our teachers & staff. These people work SO hard for our kiddos. Please read on and find ways to share your appreciation & love:

    1. Gifts for non classroom staff
Our school could NOT function without our incredible non classroom staff. By donating via this link: Staff Gifting Fund, we will be able to gift our custodians, cafeteria angels, special education staff, front office rock stars, art teacher, and the other amazing members of the SES staff.
    2. Food
Sign up here to bring in yummy brunch treats on the morning of Wednesday, 5/4. SES Staff Brunch Sign Up
    3. Flowers
Friday morning, 5/6 from 8:00 - 9:00ish, we will gather on the playground to make as many wonderful bouquets as possible to gift our staff. We need donations of flowers, vases, and/or large glass jars - and people to help put all this goodness together. The more people and flowers, the more wonderful the bouquets.
    4. Love Baskets
Contribute generously to your classes' Love Baskets (details from your Classroom Family Representatives). Write notes, share art, include small gifts and/or go in on a larger group gift from the whole class. There's no right or wrong. It's simply a way to make sure your classroom teacher feels super appreciated.

Other ways our staff will be celebrated will include but are not limited to: To-Go style snacks during the week, a roaming coffee cart from Stumptown, chalk love notes on school grounds, goody bags from Whole Foods, a lovingly decorated school and hopefully extra smiles and spontaneous thank yous from the community.

Any questions regarding our celebration, ask Leonie - simplyleonie@gmail.com.

Class pictures on Tuesday May 3 (NEW)
Spring class photos will be taken on Tuesday, May 3rd. Each class will take one formal photo and one goofy photo; each photo costs $8.00. (If you are able, please consider contributing additional funds towards a scholarship. Our desire is for every student to take home a copy of their class photo.)

No SES supervision before 8:40am or after school (NEW)
Please note that there is no supervision on the playground or school grounds before or after school.

School starts at 8:45. The office is really busy in the morning so if you can make every effort to get here on time, we would appreciate it.

    PPS-Approved Flier (NEW)

The following flier has been approved by PPS to share:

    PPS 2022-2023 district calendar
The PPS calendar for next year has been approved and can be found here. The first day of school for grades 1-8 will be Tuesday, August 30, 2022. The first full day of Kindergarten will be Tuesday, September 6, 2022. The last day of school will be Tuesday, June 13, 2023.

    Lice (again)
Our students love Sunnyside, and unfortunately LICE love all of those heads roaming around. Please remember to do weekly head checks for lice and nits, and remind your student(s) to not share hats or hooded tops/coats. It is advised to purchase a Nit Terminator comb (a one-time investment that will last forever, and can be used on multiple people with cleaning in between). Avoid chemicals and harsh ingredients, and comb through wet hair for the most effective removal. Email the school health captain Amy if you need support: aliber@mesd.k12.or.us.

    8th grade speeches
On Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays during middle school morning meeting, 8th graders are delivering these speeches, starting at 8:45am. PPS policy allows us to hold assemblies and events in person, and we're delighted to report that speeches will take place in person in the SES Auditorium. Also according to PPS policy, we cannot require people to wear masks or to social distance; please keep this in mind as you make your decision whether to attend in person.

You can find the schedule of speeches here. The schedule does change, so please be sure to check for updates regularly if there's someone you really want to see. (Note: No one is allowed to exit or enter the auditorium when a speech is in progress; please show up on time.)

    PTSA News (NEW)
Please check here for any new information from our incredibly supportive PTSA.

    • Wednesday, May 18, 6:30pm: PTSA board meeting (open to all) (NEW)
Please join us at our virtual PTSA meeting on Wednesday, May 18 at 6:30pm. It's a great way to find out more about what the PTSA does and how you can get involved. Use this Google Meet link, or the link on our calendar at sesptsa.org.
    • PTSA needs volunteers
The parents currently serving in SES PTSA positions of President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer will be ending their terms this year - we need new parents to step up and help run the PTSA! This is a vital part of our school that raises funds for art, gardening and field trips. If you're interested please reach out to our current President, Corby Watkins at corbywatkins@gmail.com, or come to an upcoming PTSA meeting.
