    School News (NEW)
    Dear Sunnyside Community,

Thank you so much for yet another wonderful week. We started the week with heavy hearts as we contemplated the tragedy in Buffalo and our teachers searched yet again for a way to stand in front of your children and lead through life events. I was privileged enough to sit in middle school as the teachers led discussions around what happened and engaged in critical thinking about the role of white nationalism and supremacy on our national landscape. Led by Levia and Tiffany, our 3rd-5th graders held some safe spaces for our students of color and then there was a student-led lowering of the flag in honor of those who lost their lives in Buffalo. Our 3rd grade students of color assembled for the first time and led by Tiffany, those students shared powerful testaments to the strength of solidarity. Watching our students come together and comfort and lead each other is the most inspiring aspect of being in schools. I thank you for your children.

As we approach the final three weeks of school, we know things will be rushed and busy. Please take a moment to reflect on the growth of your students and our community over the year. This has not been an easy year for anyone and the strength of this community has pulled us all through and given us optimism. We are all looking forward to celebrating your children as this year ends and looking forward to a bright year next year.

    In community,
    Eryn

    PPS-Approved Fliers (NEW)
The following fliers have been approved by PPS to share:

QSA Gear for the Sunnyside Community
Show your pride for LGBTQIA2S+ kids, staff, & families! We welcome all kids, families, community members, and staff (not just QSA members) to order shirts to show your passion for supporting queer and trans youth. Using these funds, our QSA will create a book list and order them for the Sunnyside School Library to be enjoyed for generations to come. The design was created by 4th and 5th grade leaders and modeled after this year's QSA zine cover.

Please make sure to carefully select adult vs. youth sizing. All orders will be shipped directly to you and will be made based on the time of your order. The sooner the better! The campaign closes on Wednesday, June 1st, just in time for Portland Pride, a celebration uplifting LGBTQIA2S+ people and a remembrance of our trailblazers like Marsha P. Johnson and the Stonewall Riots.

These shirts represent a community of affirmation, togetherness, and celebration, which are acts of resistance as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, agender, Two Spirit, pansexual, genderqueer, nonbinary and many many more types of people!

At Sunnyside, we have three QSA's- one for 3rd graders, one for 4x5, and one for middle school. We proudly have one of the most highly-attended QSAs, and our learners are leading the way towards the radical change that needs to come in order for all kids to feel safe and free to be themselves. As adults, we have a lot to learn to catch up with our incredible queer youth, and there has never been a more important time to show up and proudly support all of our learners.

Thank you for uplifting our learners and for being you :D
    ~Leo 3x5 QSA Advisor (they/them)

    Lice (again)
Our students love Sunnyside, and unfortunately LICE love all of those heads roaming around. Please remember to do weekly head checks for lice and nits, and remind your student(s) to not share hats or hooded tops/coats. It is advised to purchase a Nit Terminator comb (a one-time investment that will last forever, and can be used on multiple people with cleaning in between). Avoid chemicals and harsh ingredients, and comb through wet hair for the most effective removal. Email the school health captain Amy if you need support: aliber@mesd.k12.or.us.

    SES PTSA News
Please check here for any new information from our incredibly supportive PTSA.

    • PTSA needs volunteers
The parents currently serving in SES PTSA positions of President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer will be ending their terms this year - we need new parents to step up and help run the PTSA! This is a vital part of our school that raises funds for art, gardening and field trips. If you're interested please reach out to our current President, Corby Watkins at corbywatkins@gmail.com, or come to an upcoming PTSA meeting.
