    School News (NEW)
    Hello Sunnyside Community,

I know it has been a really impactful week and many messages have been coming from the school.

I wanted to end the week with some staffing updates and hopefully send you all off on a wonderful three day weekend.

I will send a longer email soon with all of our thanks to those staff who have joined us this year to support and who are not returning, but wanted to share a few grade changes that will be in place next year.

    • Angel will be leaving us at the end of the year. We are so grateful to Angel for all she has done to support her students and wish her the best of luck in her next adventures. I know she will be successful in whatever she chooses to do.
    • Leo will be moving to 2nd grade and taking Angel's position. The 4/5 blend is no longer necessary due to our numbers and we appreciate Leo doing that heavy lift of a blend this year.
    • Mary Gage will be able to return to our MS team as a core teacher. We are so pleased to be able to keep her and thankful for all her patience through a difficult staffing season.
    • Karen Shay will be teaching math in the afternoon and will be on a partial study leave.

More to come on staffing, but I thought that we would end this week with a little cheer and some fond good wishes to Angel.

Thank you to all of you who have tirelessly advocated for Sunnyside and our community. Have a wonderful weekend and the countdown has begun for the last two weeks of school!

    Websites to Know

To help keep things working smoothly, here are some gentle reminders from the front office:

    • Have your students wear coats and bring an extra change of clothes.

    • Do not park in no-parking zones or crosswalks.

    • Walk or carry anything wheeled while on school grounds.

    • Volunteer during lunch to help keep kids distanced.

    • Do not idle your car engine while waiting to pick up students.

    • Come to the front door and buzz if your student arrives late or leaves early.

You are formally invited to A Recipe for Murder, our student-created play and fundraiser (NEW)
We are thrilled to announce that our 8th grade students will be having an encore performance of their student-created play, A Recipe For Murder, as part of the SES Comeback Campaign/Auction/Fundraising effort that’s happening in our community on June 1, 2022 at 7 pm (doors open at 6:40 for seating)!

Every part of this show - the idea itself, the script writing, the acting, the crew, the costume design, etc. - was done by our SES middle school students. The 8th graders are performing this play once more as a way to pay it forward for next year’s middle school and K-5 students. All of the money raised by this event goes directly to the SES Staffing Fund, and we are aiming to raise $10,000 or more (!!) to pay for the SES Field Study Coordinator position, a position that is fundamental to ensuring the frequent, off-site field study experiences that are central to our environmental focus option school.

Suggested ticket donations are listed below. Please reach out to Amy Kleiner if you have questions or concerns about ticket donation amounts/attendance at this production. Tickets are available at the door of the event, or via the link attached below.

    One ticket (suggested donation): $100
    One ticket (increased donation): $200, $300, $400, $500, other ____
The above feels steep for me but I can donate ____ ($30 and up, sliding scale) for my ticket.

**Online ticket purchasing link is attached here! [Read the entire invitation here.]

Flowers and greenery donations needed for 8th Grade Promotion 6/9 (NEW)
It's a Sunnyside tradition that 6th & 7th grade families come together to create a loving 8th Grade Promotion ceremony. A simple way to support the event is donating small or large flowers and greenery. Sign up here https://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050e49aba729aaf94-2022 and drop off in the Art Room between 8-9:30am Thursday June 9th. Fellow volunteers will create crowns and bouquets. Thank you in advance.

Subject says it all: The office runs out of clean cups early each morning, making it more difficult for students who didn't bring water bottles to stay hydrated. But we have a solution! Please send a water bottle with your student every day. Thank you!

    Fond Farewells (NEW)
    Dearest Sunnyside community,

Thank you for giving me the time of my life. I feel like I have been a student all these years and it is time for my 8th grade speech! Next year I'll be a Garden teacher and classroom assistant at the Arbor School of Arts and Sciences in Tualatin. This change is an opportunity for me and my family that I couldn't refuse. I wish all the best for you all in your next adventures. I'm so lucky to have been your School Garden Coordinator and I will miss you.
    ~ Steph

Summer Garden Care - Volunteers Needed! (NEW)
NO Experience necessary! There are directions/details on the Summer 22 sign-up sheet. Cool yourself off and basically, just stand there with a hose and soak the soil every other day. What a wonderful way to give back to SES. Spend a week watering the gardens at Sunnyside with or without your kids. You can sign-up for a small section or multiple areas. There are beautiful blooms to pick for bouquets, greens and things to harvest for dinner and the satisfaction of knowing you are keeping the place alive during a quiet time.

Get Involved: Become a Member of the first PPS Climate Crisis Response Committee (NEW)
Earlier this year, the PPS School Board unanimously adopted one of the most aggressive school district climate crisis response policies in the nation. We are now looking for PPS students and members of our community to join the district’s efforts to cut greenhouse gas emission in half by 2030 and make other meaningful progress on important sustainability initiatives. If interested, submit your application to be part of the district’s first nine-person volunteer Climate Crisis Response Committee (CCR Committee) by June 15. Learn more here.

2022 Ninth Grade Counts Guide to Programs (NEW)
Ninth Grade Counts is a network of summer transition programs for incoming freshmen. These programs are offered throughout Multnomah County at low or no cost to participants. Students have the ability to earn .5 elective credits for completing these programs. This linked Guide to Programs contains lists of people to contact for each program.

    PPS-Approved Fliers (NEW)
The following fliers have been approved by PPS to share:

A message from your sunny librarian
Hey Friends, have we got a special Donors Choose for you! Our library classroom has expanded to include the MakerSpace, making more alternative wiggly inclusive seating necessary for our K-8 kiddos. Please and thank you, take a moment to check it out. A huge thanks to those who have already donated. Gillian, Becky & Winnie really appreciate you, and our wiggly kiddos do too!! Donors Choose: Wiggle Stools for Wiggly Readers.

    … AND ...

Today, Friday May 20th, was the last day of checkout for this school year and so the Book Return Balloon Race has begun!! Our library goal is to have all checked out/lost books returned and fines satisfied by Friday June 3rd. Be sure to stop by the library and see who's class balloon is closest to the finish line. The first class to have all their books returned and fines satisfied by June 3rd will win a popsicle party. Summer Reading info to follow.

    No Heelys at school
As a reminder, Heelys and other rolling shoes are not allowed at SES during school hours. Please remind your students to leave them at home, or to change into shoes without wheels when they arrive.

QSA Gear for the Sunnyside Community
Show your pride for LGBTQIA2S+ kids, staff, & families! We welcome all kids, families, community members, and staff (not just QSA members) to order shirts to show your passion for supporting queer and trans youth. Using these funds, our QSA will create a book list and order them for the Sunnyside School Library to be enjoyed for generations to come. The design was created by 4th and 5th grade leaders and modeled after this year's QSA zine cover.

Please make sure to carefully select adult vs. youth sizing. All orders will be shipped directly to you and will be made based on the time of your order. The sooner the better! The campaign closes on Wednesday, June 1st, just in time for Portland Pride, a celebration uplifting LGBTQIA2S+ people and a remembrance of our trailblazers like Marsha P. Johnson and the Stonewall Riots.

These shirts represent a community of affirmation, togetherness, and celebration, which are acts of resistance as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, agender, Two Spirit, pansexual, genderqueer, nonbinary and many many more types of people!

At Sunnyside, we have three QSA's- one for 3rd graders, one for 4x5, and one for middle school. We proudly have one of the most highly-attended QSAs, and our learners are leading the way towards the radical change that needs to come in order for all kids to feel safe and free to be themselves. As adults, we have a lot to learn to catch up with our incredible queer youth, and there has never been a more important time to show up and proudly support all of our learners.

Thank you for uplifting our learners and for being you :D
    ~Leo 3x5 QSA Advisor (they/them)

Franklin athletics: Summer and fall opportunities
FHS offers students a number of opportunities to get involved in sport over the summer and throughout the year. If you have a student interested in participating in any sport, please download the following for more information:

    Order class pictures on SchoolPay
This week, each class took one formal photo and one goofy photo; each photo is available to order for $8.00. (If you are able, please consider contributing additional funds towards a scholarship. Our desire is for every student to take home a copy of their class photo.)

End-of-year Middle School dance: Friday, June 10
The last Middle School Dance of the year is on the last day of school: Friday, June 10th from 6:30-8:30, featuring a DJ, lights and awesome snacks! We hope all middle schoolers will come celebrate the graduating 8th grade class. Families: Please visit this SugnUpGenius to sign up for chaperoning and snack bringing! (Volunteers must have active volunteer background checks.) Let’s kick off summer right!

No SES supervision before 8:40am or after school
Please note that there is no supervision on the playground or school grounds before or after school.

School starts at 8:45. The office is really busy in the morning so if you can make every effort to get here on time, we would appreciate it.

    Lice (again)
Our students love Sunnyside, and unfortunately LICE love all of those heads roaming around. Please remember to do weekly head checks for lice and nits, and remind your student(s) to not share hats or hooded tops/coats. It is advised to purchase a Nit Terminator comb (a one-time investment that will last forever, and can be used on multiple people with cleaning in between). Avoid chemicals and harsh ingredients, and comb through wet hair for the most effective removal. Email the school health captain Amy if you need support: aliber@mesd.k12.or.us.

    SES PTSA News
Please check here for any new information from our incredibly supportive PTSA.

    • PTSA needs volunteers
The parents currently serving in SES PTSA positions of President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer will be ending their terms this year - we need new parents to step up and help run the PTSA! This is a vital part of our school that raises funds for art, gardening and field trips. If you're interested please reach out to our current President, Corby Watkins at corbywatkins@gmail.com, or come to an upcoming PTSA meeting.
