    School News (NEW)
    Happy Fall Sunnyside Community,

As our summer season comes to a close and autumn draws near with her chilly morning and evenings, we celebrate our own change of the seasons. Our gardens have been pruned and emptied as we ready for our fall and winter planting season. Students have been busy with Nathan planting Kale, Broccolini and other winter vegetables. Our building is starting to look a little more like fall, as well, with our preparation for Harvest Fair in full swing and many of our classes out on field study to see all of the changes of the season. We are enjoying the hum around the building as our students get ready for the fun events that are upcoming.

Enjoy your three day weekend and mark your calendars for next Saturday. See you at Harvest Fair!
    Alix & Eryn

Help support Christina in (and outside) the cafeteria (NEW)
Hey Friends. As you may have heard from your kiddos, our Christina in the cafeteria is back after being gone for 3 long weeks. She was missed! While away on vacation she received a call that her home had been in a fully consuming fire that took not only her home, but all of her belongings and sadly her fur babies, too. Christina is an invaluable member of our community that gives and gives.

We as a community would like to purchase gift cards for stores we know Christina frequents. If you are so inclined, knowing no gift is too small, send cash to the office or Venmo @Becky-OLeary with “Christina 💜” in the comments. Donations will be collected until October 20.

Another great way to support Christina is the gift of your time. Volunteering in the cafeteria, even if it's a quick stop in and you only wash veggies is an incredible help. Sign-Up to rock lunch with Christina here. This community is a beautiful thing. Thank you so much for taking care of each other.

Support Sunnyside By Buying Delicious Pies (NEW)
SES's annual pie fundraiser is back! We are selling delicious, handmade pies from the Willamette Valley Pie Company! Pies come frozen so you can buy ahead for the holidays or for cozy nights at home when nothing hits the spot quite like a freshly baked pie. This year we are selling Dutch Caramel Apple, Cherry Crunch, Marionberry, Pumpkin, and Chocolate Cream pies. October 31 is the last day to order, and all pies must be picked up in front of SES on November 16th between 3pm - 6pm. To order, click here: PIE!

Volunteers Needed to Help Sell Pies (NEW)
We could still use a few more volunteers to help with preparing and handing out pie samples at the Harvest Fair, staffing our Harvest Fair table, and distributing pies on November 16th. Click here to learn more and sign up! Pie Sign Up Page Questions? Please contact Valerie Kahn at vdutton@gmail.com.

Calling all amazing adults who can support 8th grade cohorts
Soon our 8th graders will begin their grade-based service learning work—called 8th Grade Cohorts—and we need adult mentors willing to work with small groups. Our cohorts consist of 8th graders who are grouped together based on adult and community passions and student interest. 8th grade cohorts aim to take students deeper into important concepts of service learning, moving students beyond notions of "charity" into a greater understanding of an issue (hunger, houselessness, climate change, bullying, deforestation, animal welfare, LGBTQ+ rights, etc.).

The goals are for students to educate themselves, build mutually-beneficial partnerships, take action, educate the community and connect all work to learning outcomes. Adult mentors are an important part of this process.

This year we are aiming to offer cohort choices based on adult mentor expertise. For instance, if you have knowledge about an issue, or you are involved with a local organization that focuses on a particular issue, you could offer to lead a cohort based on that expertise. Alternately, if you are willing to lead a cohort and are open to mentoring a group that chooses to focus on an issue that you do not have experience with, that is needed as well!

As an adult mentor, you would help guide their research, provide information and expertise, keep them focused, encourage them to reach out to community experts, etc. We scaffold this so you will feel supported. Cohorts will have 5-8 students each and will meet once a month from 1-3 on either a Tuesday or Friday afternoon.

Are you interested in supporting this amazing experience for 8th graders? Please fill out this google form indicating your interest, and availability.

If you can’t join us but have a family member or community member that you would like to connect to us, please do. We need about 15 adults! We hope to have our first meeting date during the week of October 14th.

    Thank you so much,
The 8th grade leadership team: Tara, Michael, Karen and Robin

Meet up for parents and caregivers of neurodivergent students

Please email kelleymhutch@gmail.com to RSVP, ask questions or, if you cannot attend but are interested in learning more, please email to connect for future meet ups. We will also be meeting up for the next two Sundays at noon 10/9 and 10/16 at the Sunnyside playground for a playdate with our kids.
