    School News (NEW)
    Dear Sunnyside Community,

I know it's another short week! I hope everyone has settled into this chilly fall weather and I know we've all been enjoying the sun these last few days. Please enjoy this long weekend and make sure to sign up for conferences with your students’ teachers if you haven't already. We really appreciate the thoughtfulness and support of this community and if you do have time to volunteer, we welcome volunteers during lunch and recess anytime! As 2nd quarter rolls into motion, please ask your student what they are learning and enjoying in school each day so you can hear about all of the magic that we get to see in action every day as we walk through classes.

    Happy fall into winter,
    Eryn & Alix

Families helping families: The annual SES Circle of Giving (NEW)
Can you help a Sunnyside family this holiday season? Join our holiday Circle of Giving. Please look at the requests and consider donating a gift that will brighten the holidays for one of our students and their family. To participate as a donor:

    1. Use the SignUp Genius form to choose a gift to donate. You will be prompted for your name and email when you sign up.
    2. Return your gift labeled with the Item Number (from the gift description) to the SES office no later than Monday, December 12. Gift wrapping is welcome, but not required.

We will deliver gifts to our families December 15-16. To request gifts be donated to your family, please complete this form.

The Circle of Giving is a confidential process; you will only learn the age, gender (where applicable) and desired gift of your recipient. Most of the wishes are small, inexpensive and modest. You will notice requests for gift cards for Fred Meyer and a few opportunities to contribute cash. Cash donations will be used toward families' Portland General Electric accounts.

Riparian Festival volunteers needed: Friday, December 9 (NEW)
Please join us Friday, December 9 from 5:30-7:30 pm for the SES Riparian Festival, celebrating our 3rd-8th grades' fall and winter curriculum showcase. In addition to classrooms being open for tours and exploration of student work, we will also have activities for families and younger students. We end the night with a quick, joyous sing-a-long in the auditorium at 7:15 pm.

In addition to the classroom tours, it is Sunnyside's tradition to hold a community dinner in the cafeteria featuring homemade lasagnas, treats and sweets. Please consider donating a lasagna and/or baked desserts for the dinner that night, or join us for a shift setting up, serving, or cleaning up. If you’re able to help, please sign up here.

Buy a Sunnyside 2032 Calendar to Support the Art Room (NEW)
Indigo and SES Middle School Artists have created a 2023 calendar, available just in time for the new year. Order one for your home, your family, your friends, and your family and friends' homes! Buy them online at SchoolPay. Indigo will deliver them to your student to bring home. Calendars will also be available to buy in person at the Winter Craft Fair on December 2nd and Riparian Festival on December 9th at Sunnyside.

Calendars are available on a sliding scale ($5-$15). Please pay whatever you feel comfortable. All proceeds benefit the SES Art Room.

Winter Wreath partnership and fundraiser (NEW)
Support SES, women farm workers, and bring some cheer to your home by ordering a wreath. We are excited to bring the wreath sale back after a one-year hiatus and to partner once again with Mujeres Luchadoras Progresistas (Women Striving for Progress). MLP is a group of farm worker women who create economic development and promote leadership among women in their community. Their 22-24" wreaths are handmade with noble fir, pinecones and holly. Each wreath is $40. Click here to place your order via SchoolPay. Orders must be received by Sunday, November 27.

    Thanks so much!
    Justine

SAVE THE DATE: Join SES families at Westwind Family Camp Weekend of April 7-9, 2023 (NEW)
Want to spend a fun weekend at SES Family Camp on the coast? Sunnyside at Camp Westwind is a beloved Sunnyside family outing which ran for about 20 years prior to COVID-19 and returned last spring to delighted families! We have booked the camp for April 7- 9, 2023, which coincides with a no-school Friday.

The camp has made adjustments to its weekend offerings to make the experience more COVID safe - which mostly amount to more time to relax and play. The cost per person is $110 including lodging and 5 meals; food allergies/restrictions can be accommodated! Lodging at Westwind is in heated, lit cabins. Most accommodate 9 people. More details and registration link to come!

    No-cost healthcare for students (NEW)
    The Franklin Student Health Center
, located at Franklin High School (5405 SE Woodward St), is open to all Franklin K-8 feeder school families, including yours. It's like having a doctor’s office in school. Services include: well child exams, COVID-19 vaccines and boosters, flu shots and school immunizations, prescription medications and lab tests, as well as mental health counseling. All services are provided with no co-pay or out-of-pocket costs, and we will see patients with or without insurance. Your student doesn’t have to attend Franklin High School to receive these services. The Health Center sees all Multnomah County youth ages 5-18, regardless of immigration status. And free interpretation services are available. To schedule an appointment call 503-988-3370.

    Report card update
Report cards are complete and are available on ParentVUE. Middle School report cards have been sent to the printer, and will be mailed when ready. Elementary report cards are not being printed; if you would like a printed copy, please email Jenny at jethomas@pps.net and request that one be sent to you.

Lost and Found during family conferences
On Monday and Tuesday, November 21 and 22, we will have the SES Lost & Found set out during family conferences. Please make sure to check for missing items before Wednesday November 23, as we will donate remaining items on that day.

Reminder: Notify SES when a student is out with COVID
Please complete this form, call SES and leave a message on the attendance line, or ask to speak with the SES Health Assistant if your student is out with COVID-19. Though PPS is not contact tracing, they do track positive cases. Thank you.

PK-12 open enrollment for health coverage
The open enrollment period for individual and family health coverage started November 1 and runs through January 15 in Oregon. Open enrollment is the only time when anyone who is not offered coverage from a job or a public program like the Oregon Health Plan or Medicare can enroll in health coverage through the Oregon Health Insurance Marketplace, often with financial help. Individuals can access free application assistance through the Marketplace as well. Learn more here.

Meet up for parents and caregivers of neurodivergent students
Are you a parent or guardian looking to connect with other Sunnyside families with neurodivergent students? So are we! Our next meet up will be Friday, December 2 @ 9 a.m. at 3405 SE Stark Street. Please email kelleymhutch@gmail.com to RSVP, ask questions or, if you cannot attend but are interested in learning more, please email to connect for future meet ups.

The 2022-2023 SES Circle of Giving
Families interested in receiving help this holiday season are invited to participate in our annual holiday program, the SES Circle of Giving. Through the Circle of Giving families can request specific gifts they would like for their children, as well as assistance with a holiday meal. If you are interested, please fill out the form here.

There are also hard copies of this form located in the main office. Hard copy forms can be dropped off in the main office or given to your student's teacher.

All submissions must be received by Friday, December 2nd. Gifts will be delivered on Thursday and Friday, December 15th and 16th, or can be picked up in the SES office on those dates.

This is an annual event for us. We handle gift giving with discretion and all names remain confidential. Our goal is to assist families who would otherwise have difficulty during this holiday season.

If you have further questions, please contact Rebecca Johnson in the counseling office.
