    School News (NEW)
    Hello Sunnyside Community,

As we step into this long weekend I just want to wish everyone a restful four-day weekend. I also want to recognize that we are in the middle of Black History Month and each classroom has been celebrating and honoring African American contributions, throughout history and today. As we move through the month, our classrooms have been celebrating many of the joys of our collective Black History and we want to continue to highlight that joy all month long.

I want to recognize a poet who I have read many times and whose poetry is joyful and also sobering with its remembering of the power of love, connection, and the earth.

Please take a moment to read Ross Gay’s poem, “A small needful fact” and notice how he uses imagery and earth to call back to us the memory of someone taken too soon from this earth. I love the way that poems can honor memory and time and also be sad and carry longing for what we no longer have. https://poets.org/poem/small-needful-fact

Again, thanks for all the hard work of this community both at school and what you all do at home and with us together. We appreciate you.
    Eryn and Alix

Our beloved, annual READ-A-THON begins TUESDAY! Celebrate your fREADom (NEW)

The first thing you can do, STARTING TODAY:

Go to MYBOOSTER.COM to sign your kid up to help raise money. It is really easy and once you do it will be crazy easy to share their page to help SES! PLEASE sign up and share with at least one person. The first 5 classes that gets 90% or more registered students will get a treat!

Go here to see instructions on how to sign up.

The money raised through this event pays for place-based learning activities, field studies and other classroom trips! It also funds our sustainability staff (the garden program), our Spring Theater program, music at SES, and a variety of other PTSA funded programs.

The second thing you can do:

Support your student in keeping track of their reading starting Tuesday the 21st! Your student will come home with a packet on Tuesday. The packet has a reading map to keep track of reading and OFFLINE fundraising. This packet is what they will turn in at the end to get credit for reading units. VERY IMPORTANT: We keep track of reading with "reading units". ONE READING UNIT FOR K-2nd is equal to 5 mins and ONE READING UNIT FOR 3rd-8th is equal to 10 mins. They will also get a bookmark with a reading tracker to help keep track of reading as well.

The third thing you can do:

Buy a signed copy of a book written by one of our guest authors. It helps raise additional funds for our school and says thank you to the authors for visiting us.

    WEEK 1 of Read-a-thon schedule:

GO TO THE READ-A-THON webpage to see the FULL SCHEDULE OF EVENTS and to download a new brochure.

Thanks so much for your support of our students in their endeavors! Please reach out to Leslie Lothamer at leslielothamer@gmail.com with any questions.

A chance to display your art at the Belmont Library (NEW)
    Middle School Students,

We have the opportunity to have your Artwork on display at the Belmont library in their event room from March 1st- May 31st. If you have any 2D(flat) Artwork that you have created and would like to share with the community please bring it to Indigo or Meg in the Art room by Friday, February 24th. Disclaimer: The room is used by people of all ages, so I can't guarantee that it won't be touched or damaged.

Thanks so much, Indigo & Meg
