    School News (NEW)
    Hello Sunnyside Community,

This week’s newsletter is written from the 8th grade retreat at the 4H center in Salem. Our 8th graders spent two days and a overnight in classes with Sarah W., Robin and Matt Taylor, Amy Kleiner and Becca, Michael, and Tara getting introduced to the 8th grade portfolio and some individual and team building activities. We had a little rain, lots of mud, a little snow, a little sun, and loads of fun. There was surprise Karaoke from DJ Chad, some impromptu tag, rec time, games, and family style meals. Our chaperones were absolutely amazing and helpful, and our teachers were delivering amazing content all while keeping it fun and joyful for the students. The 8th graders were amazing, and being able to be together outside of the building as a class was so important and rewarding. We appreciate everyone who stayed back at the building to have special sessions with our 6th and 7th graders, and a special shout out to the office team, who helped get us organized and on the way. There may have not been a ton of sleep, but there was a lot of fun and we are so appreciative of the 4H Center and Connie who runs the center for their time and energy.

Being able to have these special overnights is part of what makes Sunnyside unique and special, and they don’t happen without the support and buy-in of all of you together with all of us.

Have a wonderful weekend and a great beginning to March!
    Eryn & Alix

READ-A-THON - Next week is the last week of reading and events! (NEW)
We’ve reached the final week of reading & events for our annual Read-A-Thon! Thursday the 9th is THE FINAL READING DAY! Don’t count any reading units beyond Thursday night, March 9th! Keep collecting pledges both online through mybooster.com and offline, though: You have until March 24th to collect pledges and turn in your forms.

If you haven’t signed up to raise money online through friends and family please do! We currently only have 30% of our students registered to raise money on Boosterthon. To sign up go to MYBOOSTER.COM. It is really easy and once you do it will be crazy easy to share their page to help SES! PLEASE sign up and share with at least one person. Go here to see instructions on how to sign up.

This week (Week 2) was a BUSY week. We had to reschedule three Read-A-Thon events due to the snow on week 1, which made for a VERY full week. We rescheduled Rainbow Dress Up Day to Wednesday, and the school was so colorful. That same day Alissa Sallah visited the middle school. She talked about her life, art, and her graphic novel, Weeaboo. She was crazy inspiring and such an amazing speaker.

Thursday Emily Whitman visited 4-7th grades. She talked about her process of writing her award-winning book, The Turning, and read aloud a few parts of the book to our students. She also talked a lot about being an author, tips for getting writing inspiration and how everyone has a story that is important to tell. It was a great presentation and I learned a lot! We still have a few signed copies of her book left. Get yours here before it is too late.

Here is the Read-a-thon schedule for NEXT WEEK (the final week and beyond):

GO TO THE READ-A-THON webpage to see the FULL SCHEDULE OF EVENTS and to download a new brochure.

Thanks so much for your support of our students in their endeavors! Please reach out to Leslie Lothamer at leslielothamer@gmail.com with any questions.

    Walk Run Move Coordinator Needed
Hi community! Steph Barnhart, PTSA FUNraising Chair here. SES Walk Run Move is returning later this year: Friday, May 26! I managed this event last year to bring it back post-Covid, but would love to find new lead coordinator(s) to train who will lead the charge for the next couple of years. It is simple, SO FUN, and already pretty organized for 2023 - great year to learn the ropes!

Do you have some project management chops? Experience volunteering at or running marathons or races? Just want to bring a lot of joy to students and a good chunk of $$$ to the school? I will work with you every step of the way this year, and I’d be happy to share more about what the job entails or answer any questions.

Some of those things are: Coordinating volunteers, brochure design & distribution, managing the fundraising program, setting up the route, collaborating with our awesome PE staff Iris, working with the PTSA safety committee, seeking prize donations, and working with our sponsors.

Even remotely curious?? Let’s talk! Email: stephbarnhart1@gmail.com.

Cleveland Youth Track registration now open
Cleveland Youth Track will begin practicing March 6. Registration is now open on Family ID. Click this link to begin registration. Registration will close once we reach our max capacity, which is 250 athletes. practices will be at the CHS track on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:00 - 6:30 pm and meets will be on Thursdays starting after Spring Break.

The Cleveland Youth Track program is looking for more parent volunteers to help us support the large number of athletes that we have on our team. You do not have to have special knowledge of any specific track or field discipline, just a desire to wrangle children and be active! If you or someone you know are interested in helping out on Mondays, Wednesdays, or both, please contact head coach and coordinator Meghan Eigo at meigo@pps.net.
