Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary has one of the most diverse student bodies in Portland Public Schools, and on Friday it held a dual event that reflected that diversity. The Global Celebration included elements tied into Black History Month and the Lunar New Year as well as other cultures in the school community.
Meet Molly, who helps Rosa Park students with their reading
Molly is a French poodle that loves children, cuddles and helping students become better readers. She is a therapy dog, and some of the special education students at Rosa Parks Elementary got a chance to practice their skills by reading to the floppy-eared canine. The Shadow Project, working with Columbia River Pet Partners, invited Molly to the school to help kids find courage when reading aloud.
Awards and honors: Counselor honored for work at Franklin; Madison actor makes history; Lincoln cartoonists place in national contest
Raquel Laiz has a new job with Portland Public Schools this school year, but she has been honored for her work at her previous position in the district. Laiz was one of nine counselors around the country to win a Counselors That Change Lives Award.
Board approves school calendar for 2019-20

That became official Tuesday night when the PPS Board of Education passed Resolution 5821, which approved Superintendent Guadalupe Guerrero’s proposed 2019-20 school calendar. The calendar was presented to the Board at its Jan. 15 meeting, with public input invited in the period before Tuesday’s final Board vote.
