Curtis Wilson Jr. of Benson has been named the Oregon High School Principal of the Year.
“Caught me completely off guard,” Wilson said of learning about the honor Thursday. “I did not expect that at all.”
The award, administered by the Confederation of Oregon School Administrators and the Oregon Association of Secondary School Administrators, makes Wilson eligible for the national Principal of the Year Award. He will be honored at the Annual COSA Conference in June and the OASSA/OESPA Principal’s Conference in October.
Martin Luther King Jr. School celebrates 50th anniversary of name change
It’s been 50 years since some impassioned students led the movement to rename their school after Martin Luther King, Jr. Last Friday, the community turned out in force to show appreciation, and to honor Dr. King with a huge celebration at the school.
My Voice: Computer programming thoughts from ACCESS students
Does the thought of coding, and all those letters, numbers and symbols, intimidate you? Three ACCESS Academy seventh-graders say it’s not as intimidating as you might think. They recently learned about potential career paths with a PPS partner, Pixel Arts Game Education, as part of 7th Grade Career and Technical Exploration week, and tell My Voice why you should give it a try.
Hundreds of Latino students interact with leaders at MEChA Conference
It was a day of learning and inspiration as Lincoln High School hosted the 20th Annual MEChA Statewide High School/Middle School Conference on Friday, April 13.
Roosevelt’s inaugural Unity Fest draws hundreds
Hundreds students and community members turned out for Roosevelt High School’s first annual Unity Fest. Students from six Ethnic Studies classes created and led the event to honor, celebrate and embrace the diverse school community at Roosevelt.
Most likely to succeed: Elliott Smith, Lincoln High School, 1987
A voice silenced all too soon, singer-songwriter Elliott Smith had a cult following for his unique vocals and evocative lyrics. Smith’s popularity reached meteoric heights in 1997 when his song “Miss Misery” was included in the soundtrack for “Good Will Hunting” and nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song. He died at age 34 in 2003.

Mother’s DayBoard report: District’s discrimination/
harassment policy expandedThe Portland Public Schools Board of Education approved a major amendment to its policy on discrimination and harassment. At its meeting Tuesday at the district offices, the Board unanimously approved a resolution to amend what will now be called the district’s “non-discrimination/anti-harassment policy.”
Middle schools: Progress report
The District is opening new middle schools at Roseway Heights and Harriet Tubman as part of an effort to offer more equitable middle grades education in those communities. This is a large and complex task that involves dozens of PPS schools, programs and departments. A look at the progress of some of the related projects.
Lincoln’s Amahn Enayati is latest from PPS to earn prestigious Stamps Scholarship
Lincoln High School senior Amahn Enayati is the latest Portland Public Schools student to earn a Stamps Scholarship, a merit-based award to attend the University of Oregon that the school calls its “most prestigious and generous undergraduate scholarship.”
