Summer bond work will touch more schools than ever
6/4/2019This summer promises to be the biggest of the PPS bond program so far. School modernization and improvement projects will touch almost every school over the coming months with security upgrades, new roofs, asbestos remediation, new fire alarms, ADA improvements and a seismic retrofit in the works.
In addition, construction will begin on a modernized Madison High School and a new Kellogg Middle School, plus a newly modernized Grant High School will re-open at the start of the new school year.
New seismically strengthened roofs will be built at Sitton and Rigler Elementary Schools and Jackson Middle. In addition, Rigler and Rose City Park will get new elevators. Work will begin this summer on seismically retrofitting Hayhurst Elementary, bringing the school up to immediate occupancy rating. Jefferson High will receive a fire alarm upgrades and a new fire sprinkler system.
Other schools getting fire alarms this summer include: da Vinci, Community Transition Program at Green Thumb, Jason Lee, Ainsworth, Maplewood and West Sylvan. Asbestos remediation projects will take place at Lane, Woodstock, Vestal, Marysville, Beaumont, RIgler and Capitol Hill
Also this summer, six schools will receive low lead drinking water stations: Arleta, Duniway, Jefferson, Llewellyn, Rigler and Robert Gray. This work is a pilot program that seeks to improve water quality and save the district money by avoiding expensive and disruptive pipe replacements within the walls.
Lead paint stabilization work will also be in full swing this summer with improvements taking place at 30 sites. The first phase of lead paint work will concentrate on pre-kindergarten through second-grade classrooms and is scheduled to be completed at the end of this summer.
Last but not least, work on the first group of 26 schools getting security upgrades will begin in July. Work on the second group of schools will get underway in late summer, and the third group will follow on in early fall, with all of the work concluding by the spring 2020.
Besides construction projects, design work is continuing on the Lincoln High rebuild project that is slated to begin in 2020 and on the Benson Tech modernization project. Benson construction will get underway in the summer of 2021.
Work will begin this summer on the modernization projects at Madison High School and Kellogg Middle School. A groundbreaking ceremony was held Saturday at Kellogg (see photos from the event).
