REAHL Toolkit offers information, resources to help students with substance use
10/7/2019The Portland Public Schools program created to support students facing substance use and mental health challenges is offering a new tool. The REAHL Online Toolkit gathers information and accredited resources to serve as a starting point for students, families and staff looking for additional strategies and supports.
REAHL, which stands for Recovery, Education and Action for Healthy Living, was introduced a year ago. It is aimed at providing a full spectrum of care for students who are experiencing addiction and mental health issues and comes in response to the increasing numbers of students and families affected by the national opioid crisis, as well as other drug and mental health crises.
PPS’s Student Success & Health Department developed the Toolkit through a grant from Regence that is focused on supporting substance use prevention efforts within PPS. The toolkit is carefully curated and will be updated on a regular basis.
The Toolkit also branches into pages for targeted audiences, with resources for educators, families and students.
The creation of REAHL came through a district-wide workgroup and is part of a five-year plan created to empower students who face addiction and mental health challenges. The REAHL continuum of care consists of four major components: prevention, intervention, treatment, and recovery. Within each component, the district is or will provide services to students directly or through partnerships with local community agencies.
Students, family members and staff who have specific information that they would like to see added to the Toolkit can contact Mary Krogh, PPS Coordinator of Substance Use Supports, at mkrogh@pps.net.
