Student and Family News, November 3012/1/2020
Dear Wilson Students and Families,
Welcome back! I hope you had a chance to connect with your friends and families over the last few days. Thank you for joining us for the parent-teacher-student conferences last week. We had more than 2600 conferences in total with more than 820 students participating. Many thanks to Abby and all the support staff who worked hard to make this year’s conferences possible. If you have any feedback regarding conferences this year, please email me and Abby. I hope this is the last time that we have to do conferences 100% remotely. Here are a few announcements for the week ahead:
Wilson Foundation Meeting - We have a Wilson Foundation Meeting on Thursday at 6:30. Please join us if you are available.
There are many ways you can show your support:
Donate directly to the foundation at The Fund for Portland Public Schools. Click on donate and follow the prompts. Be sure to designate Wilson in the drop down box. You can make a one-time donation or choose to spread out your giving by making a recurring monthly donation. Many local employers offer matching programs that could double your contribution.
Join Wilson Foundation through SchoolPay. This year we have created a way to become a member of Wilson Foundation through SchoolPay. After logging in, click on non-profit groups on the left. You can sign up for all three WHS groups (Foundation, PTA and Boosters) together or become a member of any group individually.
Become a board member of Wilson Foundation! We are looking for new members, especially parents with Freshman and Sophomore students. While this is important work, it is not a big commitment. We would love to have a Communications Chair, Grant Specialist, and a Community Liaison. We are also seeking a President Elect who can shadow and take over this role. Contact Deb Cox for details at email@example.com
Attend a Wilson Foundation meeting. At our meetings, community members can learn more about the role of the Foundation at Wilson, learn about Wilson’s staffing needs, and add your input about how resources are allocated.
Serve as the 2020/2021 Auction Chair or Co-Chair. To learn more about serving on the school auction committee, contact Deb Cox at firstname.lastname@example.org
Athletics Update- Greetings Sports Fans! A couple of quick things- Covid Guidelines-
As an abundance of caution and the recent holiday and break, we are asking athletes to follow OHA and Governor Kate Brown's guidance and quarantine from practices for two weeks who:
- Traveled out of state
- Gathered with more than 6 people
- Gathered with friends and/or family from more than 2 households
This is due to state guidance issued to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and if we all do our part to protect ourselves and our fellow Oregonians, the sooner we can get back to some form of normalcy sooner rather than later.
The following articles have further information about our ask:
Student-led Mindfulness - From Allyson Copacino, WHS Yoga Teacher: A few of my yoga students created short guided breathing and mindfulness recordings. We are wondering if you would be willing to share these recordings with teachers. They may want to use them as a short break during their classes or share the links with students to use on their own during these challenging times.

Club Photos for Yearbook- In this year's yearbook we are facing the challenge of trying to gather content in a social distanced setting. Because of this, we aren’t allowed to ask any groups to gather or actively go out and take pictures (unless someone in the yearbook is already in a certain group). It’s our goal to represent everyone in this yearbook as much as possible so we are doing everything we can to make it as accessible to everyone at our school. Therefore, if your club would like to be represented in the yearbook this year we are going to need some content to come from you.
We’re asking for you to send any sort of club photos you have, such as, pictures of students participating in club activities or pictures of what your club does, along with names of the members. If your club is willing and wants to be represented we are also asking for you to send in a group picture. Because clubs this year are over zoom one possible way to have a group picture is have every member in the gallery view and then take a screenshot to send in to us. Ideally we wouldn’t be leaving the responsibility of getting represented to the clubs when we would like to gather content ourselves, but unfortunately this is a very different year. We don’t want to break any rules due to our current state with COVID, so we thank you for your cooperation in sending in photos and we hope you’re all staying safe. Also please let us know if you cannot provide anything/ do not wish to participate so we know what content we are getting.
P.S. Not necessary of course, but if student club leaders wouldn’t mind mentioning sending any kind of photos into the yearbook that would be helpful. We’re trying to get as much content as we can to make the best yearbook we can so if you have students who would be willing to contact us for an interview or just to send in pictures that would be appreciated. Yearbook also frequently sends polls and important info to students' school email accounts and we wanna make sure students are aware of that. Thanks! Sincerely, The Yearbook Team All photos can be emailed to email@example.com
