Student and Family News, February 8
2/8/2021Monday, February 8
Greetings Ida B. Wells HS Students and Families,
I hope you had a restful weekend. My mom turned 70 yesterday and we celebrated her special day with a few hours at the Thousand Acres Dog Park. If you are a dog-lover, you should definitely check out this amazing spot.
Have a great week!
Filip Hristic, Principal, Ida B. Wells High School
Here are a few announcements for the week ahead:
BOOSTER CLUB MEETING - TONIGHT, MONDAY, FEBRUARY 8
As we transition to become Ida B. Wells-Barnett High School, the Booster Club will be discussing how we'll be titled and our role in rebranding and merchandising. Due to our registered non-profit status, folks should expect our official name change will track slightly behind the school's process.
Please plan to join us for our next meeting on Monday, February 8th at 6:30pm via Zoom, credentials are here:
https://insidetrack.zoom.us/j/6621528345 Meeting ID: 662 152 8345Our agenda includes reviewing funding requests, talking name change and looking forward to board volunteer positions expected to be vacant for next year.
NAME CHANGE TO IDA B. WELLS HIGH SCHOOL
Here are a couple of great resources about Ida B. Wells and our name change:

https://www.npr.org/2021/02/01/962946563/michelle-duster-reflects-on-life-of-great-grandmother-ida-b-wells-in-new-biograpAnd a reminder about how to refer to our school:
Official Name: Ida B. Wells-Barnett High School
Common/Abbreviated Name: Ida B. Wells High School
Final Abbreviation, used only when necessary : IBW
This is in an effort to both honor and preserve the full name of our namesake. Whereas we have largely forgotten the people after whom we've named many streets (Barbur Blvd), cities (Astoria), and even schools (Benson), we want to make sure that our namesake is not lost in how we and others refer to our school. That is why we want to stay away from referring to our school as Wells or Wells-Barnett.
