Dear Ida B. Wells Students and Families,
We are just a couple of days away from the official launch of the 2021-2022 school year! I am excited for students to be back in the building. Our teachers returned last Thursday and we were finally able to meet as a staff (socially distanced) after more than a year of meeting with each other virtually. We have such an amazing group of educators and support staff at Ida B. Wells! I feel very fortunate to work with such a great team. Our teachers are now busy getting their classrooms ready to welcome students on Wednesday, September 1. Below you will find lots of important district and school-related information. Please review this week’s newsletter and let us know if you have any questions. As you all probably know, students are highly encouraged to eat lunch outside during the first six weeks of school. Please check in with your student and reinforce the importance of eating outside and being socially distanced (6 feet while eating). I also wanted to let you know that we will cancel our Flex days for the first 6 weeks of school. This will reduce the number of cohorts that students are in and will make it easier to conduct contact tracing if needed. We will adjust calendars accordingly. For now please know that any Flex days you see reflected on the calendar will be regular A or B days.
Don't forget the "Special Edition" Virtual PTA Meeting being held tomorrow evening, August 31st. You can find all the needed information below under FAMILIES AND COMMUNITY. What to expect on the first day of school
Wednesday, September 1
7:30am - 4:00pm, Photo*/Student ID/free TriMet Hop Bus Pass make-up for anyone who missed Registration Days last week, Cafeteria
8:00am - 10:30am, as students arrive either before orientation or classes, they will pick up a newly printed schedule with their classes, homeroom number, locker info, and homeroom teachers (more info to come on homeroom reporting on flex days). Everyone will come to the Front Patio to collect their schedule. Seniors, Parking Passes will also be available for pick up for those who already requested parking through the Google Form.
8:30am - 10:20am, Freshmen Orientation, Begin in the Gym
9:45am - 10:20am, Sophomore Re-Orientatation, Begin in the Gym
10:30am - 3:30pm, Classes begin for all grades

*Lifetouch is our Photo Vendor. They will take a photo of your student that will be used on their Student ID card and in the yearbook (Seniors will be able to send in their own for the yearbook). You can also order photos from Lifetouch Lifetouch Order Form
We do not have any published supply lists. Each teacher will let their students know what supplies will be needed for their class on the first days of school. You will only need to bring a notebook or binder and a pen/pencil on the first days of school.

Date has changed for Freshman and Sophomore 101
Freshman and Sophomore 101 has been re-scheduled from September 2nd to September 9th and will be held virtually at 6:30pm. The link for the meeting will be provided in next week's bulletin.
COVID-19 and Re-Opening
PPS, Back-to-School 2021 Since the beginning of this pandemic, PPS has remained firm on being guided by public health expertise. In keeping with this commitment, this link will take you to our 2021-2022 School Year Health and Safety Measures Against COVID-19, which will help us have a full-time, in-person learning experience for PPS students this school year.

Parents, in addition, please complete this COVID 19 Testing Consent Form if you would like your student to be able to receive a Covid test should they become symptomatic while on campus. Even if you fillled out this form last Spring, we need to have a new form completed and returned to the Main Office.

Costs and Contributions
Costs & Contributions specific to your children's schedules can be made online at www.schoolpay.com. Please be sure to check both semesters when tallying Costs & Contributions. SchoolPay allows you to toggle between students as well. These contributions directly support the teacher's access to materials and supplies to provide more than what our school budget has the capacity to support. Every contributed dollar is appreciated. We are limited to 118 student parking spaces at IBWHS. Because we have such limited parking, we will only be able to give on campus parking passes to Seniors. Seniors with a parking pass can park in student parking (tennis courts to food carts) on a first come, first serve basis. To sign up for a senior student parking pass, please have your senior complete this online form using their pps google account https://forms.gle/z6jMhyMkRMTJvHbx6. There are 30 more student parking spots at Rieke Elementary parking lot. These spots will be available to all IBWHS students who also register their car on this form Please consider riding public transportation to school using your free trimet HOP pass, carpooling, walking or riding a bike to school. You can pick up your pass on the first day of school from 8:00am-10:30am on the front patio.

All students have a six-digit number that is their assigned student ID number. Whenever you call or email the school, please have the student ID number available and use it as well as your student's full name if you are leaving a message. We want to ensure we are assisting the correct student.

Concession sales are a great way for IBW teams and clubs to raise money, but volunteers are needed to work during the games/activities. The revenue from concessions benefits ALL students of IBW High School. Please choose a day and time that fits into your schedule!

New Chromebooks Available for ALL IBW Students
New Chromebooks will be available for ALL students to pick up on September 2 and September 3 during the following classes:
9th Grade: Physics
10th-12th Grade: English Language Arts Class
Frequently Asked Questions
What about my old Chromebook?
If you have a school Chromebook and/or charger from a prior year, please bring it to your Physics or English class. You will return it when you pick up your new Chromebook.
What if my old Chromebook is lost or damaged?
If you misplaced or damaged your Chromebook, you will still be able to pick up a new one. ALL students can check out a new Chromebook.
Do I have to get one?
We highly recommend checking out a school Chromebook even if you have a personal laptop or Chromebook. We cannot guarantee that applications or software used in classes will work on your personal machine. Additionally, PPS IT can offer technical support for school Chromebooks but cannot offer any technical support for personal devices. Many students choose to leave their personal computer at home and use a school issued Chromebook in classes.
What do I need to bring when I check out a Chromebook?
Please bring your student ID, student ID #, or a phone with the StudentVue app. From StudentVue, you can show your student ID with barcode. We can scan the barcode on your phone to check out your Chromebook.
Returning Materials from the 2020-2021 School Year
You can return any library books, chromebooks, textbooks to the library or textbook room (nextdoor to the library). We can take materials that belong to other schools as well. If you are not sure what you have checked out, sign in with your PPS account at this link: http://library.nwtoolbox.org/

However, if you do not want to or are unable to pay, please email IdaBWellsLibrary@pps.net to make arrangements.

Greetings Sports Fans! The Fall Season is upon us and I can’t tell you how exciting it is to see our student-athletes gearing up for competition all over campus! To see the smiles and faces of our coaches and student-athletes brings a little normalcy back to Ida B. Wells as we prepare to enter a new school year that still faces challenges to say the least. It is our goal and mission that athletics can provide a vehicle for positive social and emotional growth, while at the same time, renewing some old rivalries with some of our friends around the state and PIL. The athletic department wants to send a huge shout out to our amazing group of teachers and support staff who are working tirelessly to prepare for a safe and productive return to our building. It's not too late to sign up for some Fall sports
Ida B Wells Cross Country (XC) is back and ready to run in 2021! If you want to get in the best shape of your life and have a fun time doing it, then running XC at Ida B Wells is your sport. There are no cuts for XC, and the only requirement is that you come to practice and meets prepared to run hard, compete against the other runners and again, have fun!! We encourage runners of all levels to join one of the best XC programs in the state. Our greatest strength as a team is that all of our athletes pull for each other every practice and every meet.
The team practices M-F 10AM-12PM until 8/31. Beginning 9/1, practice is M-F from 3:45 - 5:45PM. Practices begin on the Ida B. Wells Track. The only equipment needed for XC is suitable clothing for running, a good pair of running shoes, and a watch.
In addition, our Varsity Women's team is poised to finish very high in State this year. Read about the team here: OSAA XC News Article
Interested in cheer but missed tryouts? There's still time to join! Guardian Cheer is a no-cut program, all students will be placed on our Green Squad (JV) with the potential to join our White Squad (Varsity) depending on skill level, work ethic, etc. We are allowing signups until September 7th. Tennis is a Spring sport but you can join the coach and current team members as they hit around on Fridays from 6:30-8pm on the IBWHS courts.
US Senate Youth Program
The Oregon Department of Education (ODE) administers the United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP) for the State of Oregon. The U.S. Senate Youth Program is an annual scholarship competition available to juniors and seniors who demonstrate leadership through public service in elected or appointed positions in student government, civic or educational organizations. This year, the delegates will receive a $10,000 college scholarship and attend an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C., on March 5-12, 2022. If interested, please review scholarship details and send your resume and cover letter to Principal Hristić by September 17.
Ida B Wells will be participating in a Fall Practice Season. If you enjoy water sports and would like a chance to learn the art of Dragon Boat racing, this is an excellent opportunity.
