• Student and Family News, March 14

    Dear Ida B. Wells Families,

I hope you found some rest and joy this past weekend. And now, Happy Pi Day!  Thank you to the PTA for appreciating our staff members today by providing pies!

As we all know, the mask mandate inside the school has changed beginning today. Here is a slide deck that explains what is changing and what is staying the same with regards to masking and other Covid protocols.  All of our first period teachers reviewed the slides this morning.  We recognize that the changing mask mandate may cause additional stress on our students, families, and staff.  We are also hopeful that we will navigate this transition with grace and empathy.  Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.

    Attendance Update
Thank you for using our Absence Reporting Form! It has been a great tool on our end.  Please continue to use it to excuse all absences and, when at all possible, when you need to have a student called out of class. We just need ample time to make sure we see it in time.  Just a reminder that it must be a parent/guardian who excuses absences even if the student is 18 years old.  Beginning today, you will receive an auto-reply from Google Form for the submission. If you receive this confirmation but did not fill out the form, please call Kathy Lommen at 503-916-5294.  In addition, Kathy will continue to send out an email at the end of the day to confirm the absence has been updated in Synergy.

    Transportation Update
This summer, the Portland Bureau of Transportation will improve transit in the IBWHS neighborhood through a construction project called the SW Capitol Highway Rose Lane Project. This is one of many Rose Lane Projects across the city that will improve transit reliability and decrease transit delays on key transit corridors.  Through public feedback and transit analysis, PBOT identified SW Capital Highway as a high priority and key connector between Barbur Blvd to the Hillsdale Town Center.   New bus lanes will be added in summer 2022 to help keep bus riders moving during the busiest times of the day. This project will improve transit reliability for eight separate transit lines, that normally serve over 11,000 daily riders. As a result of this project, bus riders will experience less waiting at the stop for their bus and less time on board in transit getting to their destination. The project comes with changes to how the road looks and operates. More information about the project can be found here: portland.gov/capitolrl.

Would you like to get your written work published?
Ida B. Wells student, Cate Latimer, is putting together an anthology of student-written short stories and poetry for high school students to be published in late spring of this year. Stepping Stone Publishing, the company she created and will be publishing this anthology through, is a publishing company created for and by students who love writing. Two other Ida B. Wells students are serving as editors for the anthology.

They are looking for student-written short stories, poetry, or any other form of writing that aligns with the theme "pressure." Work can be submitted through their website, steppingstonepublishing.com. Once a student submits, they will work with them one-on-one to edit their work and prepare it for publication. Submissions are due by April 1st, although earlier submissions may have a greater chance of being included in the anthology.
