Yearbooks - 2020-2021 Yearbooks Still Available for $30
The last couple of years have been a blur. So much so that it seems many of you forgot to purchase last year's yearbook. What better way to remember the weirdness of an online schooling year than by purchasing the hopefully once-in-a-lifetime Distance Learning Edition of the yearbook which, based on my 17 years as a yearbook adviser, I can assure you is one of a kind.
And now, while supplies last, we are offering this book for the lower than ever price of $30. Do your future self a favor and pick up your copy now. These can be purchased from Mr. Higbee in room 142 with cash or check, or from Ana Curtis in the main office with a card. Get yours before it's too late!

News for Seniors, Class of 2022

Each student will receive their tickets for Commencement after the Check-Out process on May 31 and June 1 (they must be cleared). Providence Park will have general admission seating this year. The electronic-only tickets are distributed through SeatGeek and will all be delivered to one email address (not student PPS address). Once tickets have been received, they can be transfered to other individuals in your group, if needed.  Each graduate will receive up to 10 tickets but If more tickets are needed, it will not be a problem as there will be ample seating at Providence Park.
You will just need to request additional tickets if you need more than 10. A form will be delivered this week that will request all the needed information. It should only be filled out once for each graduate.  Please watch for this in your email.
We would like to let you know that PPS will be providing interpreters, free of charge, for graduation ceremonies at Providence Park this year. The languages they are offering interpreters for are Spanish, Russian, Cantonese and Mandarin, Somali, Vietnamese and American Sign Language. We will have headsets for those listening to an interpreter available at the ticket gate for you to pick up and we will bring you to a reserved area where your interpreter will be set up. Entire families will be able to sit together even if they all do not need interpretation.  We will have information soon about how to request interpretation.
Most Yard Signs were handed out at the Senior meeting last week but if you pre-ordered your class of 2022 yard sign, they can still be picked up at the school in the main office.

We also still have signs available for purchase for $20. To purchase, you can pay on school pay or in person with Erica Caldwell in the main office with cash or check.  Checks should be made out to Grad Night.

    Community Equity Council
The Ida B Wells Community Equity Council is working to raise funds for an event to celebrate the IBW students who have worked so hard on our No Place For Hate program.   This will be a much-deserved opportunity to honor the Ida B Wells No Place For Hate Peer Facilitators and their families.  As our first No Place for Hate - CEC in-person event in years, we would like to provide a meal for these incredible students and their families as we especially recognize the Seniors in this group who additionally represent and participate in a number of our culturally specific affinity groups.  This event is scheduled for May 26th.

Would you or your business be willing to make a tax-deductible donation to the Ida B Wells Community Equity Council so we can celebrate these students and their families who have worked so hard for much-needed change, but who have often been given so little in return?  Even small donations can make a big difference!

Online donations can be made to the PTA here: https://www.schoolpay.com/link/IBWAffinityGroupsCommunityEvent

    News from our Social Worker
Our social worker, Britni Locke, would like to restock the IBW Pantry one more time before Summer. Not only is her daily snack inventory very depleted, but she would like to have the inventory to send some bundles home for families to use over Summer months. The signup link includes what is most needed, instructions for delivery and options to have items shipped.  All your contributions go directly to students at Ida B Wells.  If you need additional support, please message blocke@pps.net.

Spring Sports concessions will be open and we need volunteers to work the shifts. Here's the schedule and link to sign up: https://signup.com/go/ycboLia

By popular demand, we now have YOUTH hoodies! They are available now on Schoolpay for $30.  Same hoodie quality and graphic as the adult version.  Youth sizes Small through Large.  We don't carry XL because it's the same as an adult Small.

    Youth Hoodie
Boosters will have three open board/volunteer lead positions for the 2022-2023 school year. Please message me if you would like to consider taking one of these roles. Ideally we would like someone able to be in each of these roles for the entire fiscal year, which runs July 2022 thru June 2023.
    Social Media
This involves keeping our FB page updated and promoting meetings, merchandise, concession signups and especially the tree sale. You would be assigned an editor role on our existing page. Detailed instructions and content are provided.
    Sign-up.com Management
Manages signups for Concessions & Tree Sales and keeps them updated. Full disclosure, covid has made this job a bit whacky. Traditionally, all the work on the Concessions signup would be done at the start of each sports season, with only minor tweaking. The last couple of years have required more cross-checking as games get canceled, rescheduled and/or concessions is shuttered by the district. Detailed instructions are provided.
    Brick Sales
Promotes our etched bricks for sale and then oversees installation on the plaza outside the Track Field House. Involves preparing content for the bulletin and especially senior newsletters, and then keeping it at the front of school communications during prime brick sale times. Confirms orders with buyers and arranges for etching, followed by installation. Bryan has led for several years and his youngest is now graduating. He's happy to meet to provide detailed instructions and training.
The online Spring Fundraiser and in-person event took place last weekend.  Both events were a tremendous success with more than $50,000 raised for  IBW Students and the overall school.  More than $25,000 was raised by the Foundation alone.  Added to the money raised by the foundation throughout the year, this money will allow Principal Hristic to add an additional 1/2 time FTE to his school staffing allocation.  Thanks to all the parents and community members alike who donated.

More than 20 IBW clubs and groups raised money through the online fundraiser.  The auction committee is busy getting all the items to the winning bidders.  We would like to take the opportunity to once again thank all our donors and bidders.
On the evening of April 23rd, more than 100 people attended the in-person auction event at Red Tail Golf Center.  This took place outside on the patio area and we benefited from terrific weather.  This was the first in-person fundraising event in nearly 3 years and it was great to see people together. Thanks to everyone that attended the event.  It was a reminder of the commonality that we all share-that we are proud of the IBW community.  We look forward to future events and bringing even more people together. With Gratitude--

    Athletic Weekly
    Greetings Sports Fans!
Well we managed to get through some of the bad weather last week. What a crazy spring season this has been. Our Varsity Baseball Program had a tough week last week squaring off with Grant and Roosevelt. They came up short in all three games but look to bounce back this week with some pivotal games against Roosevelt and Benson. Our Softball Program continues to battle it out in league play. They have been hit with the injury bug unfortunately for the young squad but have managed to compete day in and day out. They too have a big week ahead with four league games. The Women’s Golf Team wrapped up another PIL League Championship this past week. This is a 4-Peat for the program! They are getting tuned up for State. The Men’s Program is gearing up for a run at districts. Both of our Tennis Programs are looking to wrap up league play this week with a contest versus Cleveland as they prepare for districts. Finally, both the Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse Programs have pivotal games this week as their regular season is winding down. A huge thanks to our coaches for all of their hard work and dedication this season. Exciting times for the Guardians! To continue reading, click HERE

    Wrestling News
We are having OPEN MAT at Jackson MS for the next 4 Mondays (first 4 Mondays in May) from 5:30 to 7PM.  The door at back of school (by old tennis courts) will be open.  Yes, TODAY!
Our new wrestling room is shaping up with new wall mats!  We’re having a strong turnout of middle school girls and boys but we’d love to have more HS wrestlers come to practice and play. Everybody is welcome - Beginners on up. Bring a friend or sibling or partner.  Hope to see you there.
    Blood Drive Success!
What an incredible Blood Drive Ida B Wells HS hosted last Friday!  Our goal going into the event was 40+ donations.  There is currently a blood shortage crisis and the fact that Ida B Wells High School was able to collect 47 units on Friday, and save up to 141 lives (each unit can save 3 lives) is outstanding.  I would like to thank all the individuals that took the time to donate blood and/or who helped volunteer to run the drive.  Special thanks need to go out to Karli Norell, Claire Catalan, and Aly Wright our Red Red Cross Club Co-Presidents.  They spent countless hours working on coordinating the event and it would NOT have happened without their teamwork, passion and efforts.
