    From the Principal

    Hello Woodstock Families,

It’s been another beautiful week at Woodstock.  The cool and dry weather has made recess and other outdoor activities really enjoyable.  Thanks for remembering to dress your child in layers as the cool mornings have been turning into sunny afternoons.

If you haven’t done so already, please be sure to register for a conference time (see below).  At your child’s conference you can expect to get an update on their progress over the first few months of the 2019-2020 school year.  Your child’s teacher should also be sharing your child’s fall benchmarking/screening results with you. Be sure to ask about your child’s DIBELS or BAS summary at K-2nd or the MAP Report at 3rd-5th.

If you have a child enrolled in the Mandarin Immersion Program, you should also be receiving information about their Chinese Literacy progress and available home resources through Level Chinese.  This is an exciting new tool that is helping teachers provide instruction appropriate to student strengths.

I’d also like to send a special “thank you” to the families that came to the Garden Visioning PTA Family Seminar.  Our Sustainability and Garden Committee Coordinator led a very interactive session designed to help our school move forward with the School Garden aspirations.  If you’re interested in contributing in the future, please contact Mr. Hunter at jhunter@pps.net.

Speaking of sustainability, I’d like to thank all the families that have been sending reusable cups/bottles with their children for lunch.  You may or may not be aware that drinking fountain in the cafeteria has been turned off for the past couple of years and we have relied upon a water dispenser with disposable cups.  By bringing reusable cups and bottles, we can significantly reduce the waste of paper and plastic cups.

Thanks again for all you bring to you community.  Have a great three day weekend.

    With Woodstock Pride,

    Seth Johnson, Principal
    Woodstock Elementary

    Thank You Portland Voters!

All of us at PPS are thankful that voters across Portland voted to renew the levy that pays for over 800 teachers per year, teachers in every school in the district, including here at Woodstock. That’s about one-third of all PPS teachers.

Thank you for your vote of confidence and for your support of our teachers. Thank you for believing in Woodstock.

    Season of Sharing

    Dear Families,

For the winter holidays, we are offering some assistance for families that are having difficulty making ends meet. We are currently collecting holiday wish lists from families needing support.

Here is how the program works:

We will be taking referrals for families during the month of November. Families wishing to participate in the program will fill out a wishlist for each child in their home. Please return your child’s wish list by November 12th.

Each wishlist item will be coded, written on a tag and placed on the bulletin board across from Room 1. All names of program participants will be left off the tags and kept confidential. Families that are able to give will take one or more wishlist tags from the bulletin board and shop for those items. They will then bring the wrapped gift(s) or gift card(s) to the office with the tag attached. The tags are very important because they will have the family code written on it to be sure that the gifts go to the appropriate families.  I will contact participating families and distribute the gifts.

This is a confidential program. To inquire about participation, please call me at 503-916-6380 or talk to your child's teacher. During the weeks of Nov 12 - Dec 6th, check out the Season of Sharing bulletin board if you would like to fulfill someone's wish! Thank you for your care and concern for our school community.

Chess for Success starts on TUESDAY November 19th

Chess Club will meet on Tuesdays (not Mondays as previously published) from 2:45 until 3:45 pm in the cafeteria starting November 19th.

We have a new coach this year, Mr. Padura! Mr. Padura used to be in a chess club when he was in school and he can't wait to teach you all about his favorite game, and all its intricacies.

Pick up your permission slip in the office, and remember club starts Tuesday November 19th.

We are still seeking other parents and family members to volunteer during the Chess for Success sessions.  Please contact the office if you are interested in helping.

This year, conferences are scheduled for November 25 and 26.

If you need an interpreter for you child's conference or need assistance scheduling a conference, please email your child's name and your needed language to WoodstockAttend@pps.net.

Any appointments that are scheduled prior to the appropriate registration window may be deleted as the schedule is cleared for the tiered registration. Thanks for your cooperation.

Parents/guardians are being asked to register for conferences online.  As this is such an important event and we truly want all families to be able to attend, we have developed tiered conference scheduling to allow for more equitable access to conference registration.  Below you will find the dates that registration opens to families:

    • Families whose First Language is NOT English - Tuesday, October 8 at 8:00 AM
    • Families with Multiple Children Attending Woodstock - Friday, October 11 at 8:00 AM
    • Open to All Families - Monday, October 14 at 8:00 AM

Please use the following link to register for conferences during your window:

Again, if you need an interpreter for conferences or if you have extenuating circumstances that need to be considered for conference scheduling, please email WoodstockAttend@pps.net.

We look forward to seeing you at conferences!

    Additional Conference Information:

    • Families who will not be able to attend conferences due to a family vacation or similar reason will receive a conference summary form from their student(s) teacher(s).  Since these days have been designated as conference days when the orginal district calendar was approved, we will not be scheduling additional conferences outside of these times.
    • Also, please note that due to time limitations and other factors, we are only scheduling one conference per student.

    • 母语非英语的家庭; 10月8日星期二早上8点
    • 有两个或两个以上在本校就读的家庭 :10月11日星期五早上8点

    From Shu Ren

Volunteers needed for Chinese Homework Help

We need Classroom Monitors for the next 2 weeks of Chinese Homework Help. If we do not get a volunteer, we will need to cancel the sessions. Please consider helping out on any day you can as this is solely volunteer-run and many families rely on this resource. You can bring other children who are under your care with you while you volunteer. You also do not have to have a student signed up for HH to volunteer.

Also note that our usual Chinese Speaker volunteer will no longer be available on Wednesdays. We will still offer the session as long as there is a Monitor, but students will need to work with one another for help. If you know Mandarin or know a friend or relative who knows Mandarin, we would greatly appreciate your help on Tuesdays or Wednesdays! 5th grade students are also highly encouraged to sign up and help. It is ideal to have 2 Chinese Speakers per session.

Please sign up using this link  or text me (Linda Yeh) at: 425-280-7660.
