From the Principal
Hello Woodstock Families,
Thanks to all who attended the 3rd-5th Grade Art and Music Show last night. It is always great to see families come out to support and enjoy the Woodstock Arts Program. A special thanks to Mrs. Rowey, who has been working hard with students in preparation for last night’s performance, and to Ms. Candace, who has been able to bring some great ideas and approaches to visual arts instruction at our school that were on display last night.
Speaking of art, many of you may have noticed that the mural that used to be in our cafeteria has recently been removed. I’m sorry that this information comes a little after the fact, but I wanted to take a moment to share the rationale for its removal.
At Woodstock, we believe that all students should feel their school is a welcoming place. We want our school and our walls to be positive and encouraging to students, staff, families, and community members. Unfortunately, the mural did not align with our school beliefs. In cooperation with Facilities and Asset Management, the decision to remove the mural was based on discussions with the Arts Advisory Committee and the Equity Committee, as well as through consultation with district officials knowledgeable on the subject.
Moving forward, this provides us with an opportunity to create a new mural that captures our school values and is a better representation of our community, while allowing for discussion on how students can be active social change agents.
As community-building is based on an understanding of who we are and how we cooperate, it is important to be sure to recognize and celebrate our successes as a school community and individuals. Over the past several weeks, students have been working to fill the “Lion’s Den.” (The “Lion’s Den” is where we collect all the individual “Pride Insides” students earn.) At the Morning Meeting today, we were able to fill the den! As a reward, we are going to have a School Wide Pajama Day on Friday, December 20! Students can wear appropriate PJs to school next Friday. Please make sure that students also wear a jacket and appropriate footwear for the school day.
Finally, I would like to provide an update on some important staff updates and changes. First, Ms. Fogg has accepted a new position at the District Office as an Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA). As a result, her last day as a First Grade MIP English Partner Teacher will be December 20. Mid-year transitions are always difficult, but she has been able to communicate with families impacted by this change and has been working with the teacher replacing her to ensure a smooth transition. We thank Ms. Fogg for her work with students at Woodstock and wish her the best in her new role as a MTSS TOSA.
As I’ve mentioned, mid-year transitions are difficult, but we are fortunate that we have already been able to secure the new First Grade MIP English Partner Teacher. Mrs. Ruhoff has been hired as the First Grade MIP English Partner Teacher for the remainder of the 2019-2020 School Year and will assume responsibilities immediately upon Ms. Fogg’s departure. Some you may already know Mrs. Ruhoff as she is currently a Temporary Teacher in our Neighborhood Kindergarten, covering for Ms. Taya, who will be returning after winter break. Last year, Mrs. Ruhoff was one of our English Language Development Teachers, so she has some great experience in our school and a strong knowledge of students across our building. We are excited to have her continue as a teacher in our building!
I also need to share some staff news that I’m sure will be sad to our whole school community: this will be Karla’s last year at Woodstock. Effective at the end of December, Karla will be retiring from PPS. However, she will continue to work through the rest of this school year. Karla has obviously been a fixture at our school for years and has impacted and touched so many lives, her presence will definitely be missed. It is difficult to share this with a school community that has such strong connections to Karla. Although we felt it was important to share this information now, there will be more opportunities throughout the year to thank Karla for her service and her work caring for the students, staff, and families of Woodstock.
With Woodstock Pride,
Seth Johnson, Principal
