    From the Principal

    Hello Woodstock Families,

With the late opening last Friday, it seemed like it had been quite a while since we had been together for a Friday Morning Meeting, so it was great to see everyone together again.

This morning, we briefly revisited Curiosity, Compassion, and Integrity, as the values we have already shared as a part of our School Climate Booster Month.  We then introduced the final value for this month, Perseverance. Classrooms have been participating in activities aligned with these values over the course of this month and we are looking forward to a culminating celebration of these values late January or early February.  Be sure to talk to your child about the work they are doing at school around these four values.

We also took some time this morning to share that the Lunar New Year Door Decorations will begin next week.  Some classes have already started working on their door with the “Year of the Rat” theme. These always tend to be great displays of classroom creativity and we’re looking forward to this year’s decorated doors!

Later in this letter, you’ll read about an upcoming “Successful Schools Survey” that is conducted across the district.  This is a great resource for our school as we look to improvement efforts and you are strongly encouraged to participate.  As the district’s campaign for the “Successful Schools Survey” is about to begin, I’d like to put in a final plug for the Woodstock Curriculum Night Interest and Engagement/Communication Survey.  This survey will close January 26 and your input is appreciated.

In the past couple weeks, I’ve received a couple of questions about engagement, communication, and volunteer opportunities.  This information is located in different areas on our website, but in an effort to make it more accessible and easier to locate, it has been consolidated on the “Family Engagement” page on our school’s website.  Please take a moment to review the engagement, communication, and volunteer opportunities at Woodstock.  If you have any questions or would like more information, please feel free to contact me.

Finally, please remember that there is no school for students on Monday, January 27 and that the MIP AM/PM classes will switch on Tuesday, January 28.

    With Woodstock Pride,

    Garden Tasting Event Success!

Over the last few months students in Mr. Hunter's class have been growing a variety of vegetables in the Woodstock School garden, including cabbage, broccoli, kale, radishes, etc. Today, thanks to the support of volunteers and our amazing lead cafeteria staff person Nadia, students in all grade levels were able to sample this incredible bounty during all three lunch periods. Many students were excited and even clamored for seconds or even third helpings! Thank you to everyone who made this possible and look forward to more events of this kind in the future.

Successful Schools Survey - Shape the future of your student's education!

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the phrase “successful schools?” We believe that successful schools are safe, healthy and welcoming learning spaces that are inclusive for all students. But we want to hear your thoughts.

In 2019-20, Portland Public Schools is again partnering with Panorama Education to gather information students and families that will help us improve student experiences across the district. We will survey students in grades 4, 5, 7-10 on their experiences in their classrooms and schools, and families about their perception of the school their child attends.

The survey will cover topics on sense of belonging, school safety, school climate, barriers to family engagement, as well as how students are thinking and feeling about diversity, equity, and inclusion in school.

The current launch date is set for January 27th, the student window is scheduled to be open until February 14th and the family survey until February 28th. Stay tuned for further information!

Please be honest and thoughtful, we value your feedback!

Shirts are priced at 18$ each or 2 for 30$. Shirts will be pre-ordered and then delivered after Feb 14th. In addition, we are selling Year of the Rat Grocery Totes. Totes can be pre-ordered but will also be for sale and on hand at the Lunar Festival. With the new grocery bag law in effect, some new grocery totes would be a useful purchase.
