    From the Principal

    Hello Woodstock Families,

Happy Lunar New Year!  Xīnnián kuàilè! Don’t forget that tonight is the Shu Ren Lunar New Year Celebration.  It looks like it will be another fantastic event. The festivities begin at 5:30 PM. A big thanks in advance to the Shu Ren members and volunteers that make the culturally enriching experience an opportunity for our school community!  We hope to see you here tonight!

This morning, we celebrated our school’s work around our values, Compassion, Curiosity, Integrity, and Perseverance, and shared some classroom experiences for this past month.  Our Student Leaders also helped hoist some new banners that were a collaborative creation of students across our school. Please be on the lookout for these banners hanging in our school soon.

    WSE

To close out our Morning Meeting, students all received their 2019-2020 Woodstock Pride shirt!  It was really neat to see all students and staff around school today wearing their new shirts, showing their Woodstock Pride.  As a reminder, students are encouraged to wear their Woodstock Pride shirts or other Woodstock Elementary gear every Friday.

I’d also like to share a brief staffing update.  Sarah Vann, the Woodstock Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP), is taking leave from school through mid-April.  In the past, we’ve often had difficulties finding substitutes for these long-term leaves in the SLP department, so we are happy to share the the position has been filled.  Chris Davies will be filling the SLP role until Mrs. Vann returns later this spring. Some of you may remember that Mr. Davies previously served as a long-term SLP substitute at Woodstock, so students may remember him.  If you have a child receiving SLP services and have any questions, please feel free to contact me or Mr. Davies. Mr. Davies email address is cdavies@pps.net

Finally, as we are continuing to see family input to incorporate into our school programs, we are seeking additional ways to weave additional family voice and perspective into our work.  If you have an interest in participating or contributing, please complete this form.  Your input is much appreciated.

Thank you for being a part of our school community and have a great weekend.

    With Woodstock Pride,

    Seth Johnson, Principal

PPS Successful Schools Survey: Family Feedback

    Dear Parents/Guardians,

Thank you so much for participating in our annual Successful Schools Family Survey. Your responses will help your school understand your experience and use them to set goals and plan for next year. The survey will cover topics on school safety, school climate, barriers to family engagement, racial equity and inclusion as well as how well your school fits your student’s needs. Please be honest and thoughtful, and take your time to read and respond to the questions.

Please visit the link below on a computer, tablet, or smartphone and select the school your child attends. If you do not have access to a computer or internet, please contact your school office so we can provide a way for you to take the survey. Thank you so much for your time and feedback!

    Medications at School

As a reminder, all medications that are to be taken at school must be checked in through the health room. These medications include over the counter as well as prescription medications. Please stop by the health room to fill out the appropriate forms or you can access the attachments here.

All medication will be required to be in its original container. For prescription medication, the pharmacy prescription label must be present to have the medication at school. This includes albuterol inhalers.

If you have questions, please contact our school nurse at cbell@mesd.k12.or.us

School Exclusion Day is February 19

Don't let your child miss school! If your student is missing vaccines, now is the time to catch them up.  February 19, 2020 is school exclusion day. On this date, PPS students who are not up to date on vaccinations will be unable to attend school.  PPS partners with the Multnomah County Health Department to provide comprehensive preventative, primary and mental healthcare services for all Multnomah county school-age youth regardless of ability to pay.

Student Health Centers are located in the following Portland Public School High Schools: Cleveland, Franklin, Jefferson, Madison (at Marshall), and Roosevelt.

Help us create an arts roadmap for PPS by taking this survey

As Portland Public Schools continues to work to create a comprehensive roadmap for arts education throughout the district, we need your input!

What do you value most about arts education? The PPS Visual and Performing Arts Department (VAPA) is conducting a survey to gauge what students, families, community members, arts partners and staff want to prioritize in creating the district’s Master Arts Education Plan (MAEP).

    Wet Days

    WSE

The changing weather along with spills and accidents make for wet clothes during the school day.  The kids at Woodstock Elementary still go out to recess on wet rainy days. Please store a complete change of clothing (socks, underwear, pants, and shirt) in your child’s backpack in the event they are needed.

NO ONE EATS ALONE DAY – FEBRUARY 14

Being left out or feeling lonely or invisible are symptoms of social isolation, which is why Beyond Differences, a non-profit organization, created No One Eats Alone Day to prevent bullying and combat feelings of loneliness that can be felt by children each day at school lunch.

    WSE

National No One Eats Alone Day is February 14, to enable students to make an impact on those in their own communities, create active inclusivity, which will, in turn, create changes that stick. A teen-led, grassroots program, Beyond Differences promotes this student-led lunchtime event to encourage students (their peers) to engage in simple acts of kindness at lunch, working to prevent bullying before it starts and empowering teens to lead the movement to change the culture of the school lunchroom. And not just on one particular day, but every day in the cafeteria.

Visit www.nooneeatsalone.org to access free resources to do all you can to champion this event supporting inclusion and anti-bullying awareness. Download helpful flyers (in English and Spanish), conversation cards and suggested activities. The associated programming for No One Eats Alone Day is provided free of cost—all you have to do is sign up and Beyond Differences will send you a purple backpack with supplies.

Dear Parents of Woodstock, Hosford and Cleveland Schools,

This year’s Zodiac shirt was designed by Keane Toney, a 4th grade student at Woodstock Elementary. Shu Ren is selling Year of the Rat Tshirts for youth sizes ONLY this year. Shirts are priced at 18$ each or 2 for 30$. Shirts will be pre-ordered and then delivered after Feb 14th. In addition, we are selling Year of the Rat Grocery Totes. Totes can be pre-ordered but will also be for sale and on hand at the Lunar Festival. With the new grocery bag law in effect, some new grocery totes would be a useful purchase. Totes are 5$ each or 5 for 20$. All proceeds will benefit the Mandarin Immersion Program parent group, Shu Ren of Portland. The money raised goes to funds allocated to the immersion students at our three ‘sister’ schools. The t-shirts and totes support our program and create visibility in the larger community.
