A new school year begins: A message from Superintendent Guerrero8/30/2019
Dear PPS Staff and Families,
We are off to a great start! As I visited schools this week, there were a lot of smiles visible from our students, families, and educators. This past Wednesday it was all hands on deck, with over 125 central office staff spending the first day of classes distributed at schools across the district, pitching in wherever needed. I was heartened to see how our teachers and administrators so warmly and enthusiastically welcomed students back on Wednesday.
The start of every new school year is always filled with much anticipation and excitement. This was a busy summer full of activity. New school leaders were selected for many of our schools, construction and modernization work was completed on many of our campuses, and central office staff provided a range of professional learning opportunities for our talented employees. I want to extend a warm appreciation to the broader school community for playing a part in making sure our schools were ready for students, including volunteering during a very successful Community Care Day to beautify our campuses this past weekend. This attention to preparation also included teachers who carefully set-up their classrooms, principals who did a lot of intentional planning and preparation, support staff who participated in additional summer trainings, and the dedicated service of our bus drivers, custodians, and nutrition workers. These are just a few examples; thank you everyone for putting in the extra effort to take care of our students.
This positive collective spirit speaks to the efforts we are all making to transform Portland Public Schools. I believe this will be a big year for Portland Public Schools. Students, educators and many community stakeholders spent last year developing a vision for the future of our school district, reImagining Portland Public Schools. That work is now getting underway. As our vision describes, it is our shared commitment that every student experiences excellence and equity and that when they graduate, they are prepared to lead and change the world.
This is an ambitious and exciting task ahead of us. I am honored to be a part of this journey with you.
Wishing you a wonderful holiday weekend. We are excited to welcome all of our new kindergarten students on Tuesday!
