    The Odyssey LOVE Your neighbor Donation Drive

    Now through February 14

    People are hungry. People will be hungry. You can help.

    Our community has a big heart. Let’s show it. Announcing a Donation Drive to help support the Hayhurst-Odyssey-Ainsworth community. In this time of contention and unstable future, let’s bring the love.

    To help the more than forty families in our broader school community that rely on federal resources we are having a donation drive. We are looking for either shelf stable items from the list below and cash/gift card donations to buy perishable items. Cash donations will be turned into grocery store gift cards and divided between bolstering the existing food bag program that supports Hayhurst-Odyssey-Ainsworth neighborhoods and being distributed directly to families by Principal Froelich. Our cash goal is $4000. This would help allay just a single month of benefits in the event of any disruption. If there is no disruption the food bag program will be well funded for the remainder of the year.

    Shout-out to those affected by the federal shutdown, we want to help. Talk to Principal Froelich and let her know what you need. In fact, if you are in need for any reason talk to Principal Froelich.

    Requested food items (as identified by the Oregon Food Bank):

    Canned soup/chili (low sodium)

    Ramen noodles

    Peanut butter and Almond Butter

    Canned tuna

    Dried pasta

    Canned fruit

    Shelf stable milk

    Beans (canned or dried)

    Whole Grain Cereal

    Cooking Oil

    Canned Tomatoes

    Boxes will be in the Odyssey Lobby for canned goods. Cash and Checks made out to Odyssey PTA as well as any grocery store gift cards can be placed in the LOVE Your neighbor collection canister in the office.

    We are also looking to provide Valentine’s Day cards for families. To cover the need we are looking for 50 boxes of cards. These can also be dropped in the office.

    Let’s show our neighbors “We  LOVE You!”

    Odyssey Information Event Volunteers Needed

    Hello Odyssey Parents,

    Odyssey information events are quickly approaching, and we’ll need your help volunteering to make it a success. Our new information event flyer (low resolution) is attached. The event dates/times are February 21st, March 6th and March 11th.

    There are several volunteer opportunities for you to consider:

    1.     Distribute flyers: help distribute flyers at your neighborhood coffee shops, community centers, churches, libraries, etc. throughout Portland;

    2.     Social Media Mavens: spread the word about Odyssey information events on your favorite social media platform, with Facebook and Nextdoor serving as obvious ones;

    3.     Identify outreach locations in underrepresented communities: if you belong to or are networked within an underrepresented community in Portland, I’d like your help getting the word out about Odyssey; and

    4.     Event logistics (i.e., 2/21 or 3/6): help set up/take down chairs, hand out information packets about the school as guest arrive, and pass out a questionnaire at the end of the events before guest leave.  (3-5 volunteers for each event are needed).

    If you are able to volunteer for any of these opportunities, please contact me directly and feel free to reach out with questions. I look forward to hearing from you.

    Thank you!

    Todd Stevenson

    Fall Festival: Need for Leadership!

    Since 2015, we have had either an auction (with Hayhurst) or our own event (Fall Festival). Those events have helped pay for most of the technology in our school (such as chromebooks, iPads, WeDo Kits, Makey Makeys, EV3 Lego Robots), library books, chuck wagon trailer, shed, auditorium upgrades, and much more. Additionally, the 2016 auction funded our transition to East Sylvan.

    Unfortunately, we are losing the Chair and Auction Organizer (Rebecca Hicks and Lisa VanNatta) for 2019. We need parents to fill these roles. Rebecca and Lisa are willing to help the next Chair and Auction Organizer transition. Attached are the job descriptions that they prepared for your review. Each position can be held singularly or jointly.

    The long and short of it is that if parents do not step up then there is no Fall Festival next year. Basic planning traditionally starts before winter break and procurement begins now. However, there is still time to start but that time is now. The 2019 Fall Festival will only be our 3rd and is really what parent volunteers want to make it.

    If you are interested in either position or want to discuss the positions further, please contact myself at ospc-chair@odysseyprogram.org, Rebecca Hicks at rebgak@hotmail.com, or Lisa VanNatta at lisavannatta@gmail.com.

    Thank you!
