Introducing new principal at Odyssey, Eryn Berg7/31/2019
Dear Odyssey Community,
I am pleased to announce that Dr. Eryn Berg will be the new principal of the Odyssey Program. We know Odyssey’s focus option approach and community are unique, and we believe Eryn will be a good fit to lead it.
Eryn will succeed Deanne Froehlich, who has been principal of both Odyssey and Hayhurst Elementary School for 10 years. We thank Deanne for her service and dedication and wish her all the best in her new position as principal of Lewis Elementary School.
With Deanne’s departure, we wanted to have a principal dedicated solely to Odyssey. Eryn is a veteran educator who previously served as a principal at Martin Luther King Jr. School and for the Portland Evening and Summer Scholars. At King, she led the International Baccalaureate and Turnaround Arts programs, and wrote and received several significant grants. She also started a Mandarin Immersion program for kindergarten and first-grade students.
The last four years, Eryn served as assistant principal at Alameda Elementary. She led teams focused on equity, safety, leadership, climate, and peer observation, and was coordinator of restorative justice. She also has served as an administrator at ACCESS Academy, initiating the first staff and parent equity team, increasing outreach to students of color and founding a Gay-Straight Alliance.
Eryn started her career as an English teacher in Florida, starting with a dropout prevention English program before moving onto an English honors program. She moved into administration as an assistant principal at Lakeridge High School in 2008.
Eryn earned a Bachelor of Arts in English, with a minor in Psychology, from Brigham Young University; a Master of Arts in American Studies from Columbia University; and a Doctor of Education Administration degree from Concordia University.
Please join me in welcoming Principal Berg to Odyssey.
Keeley Simpson, Ed.D.
