Tips for parents and students about applying for financial aid
2/4/2019Attention parents of seniors: It’s not too late to apply for financial aid for college for the upcoming 2019-20 academic year by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, commonly known as FAFSA. Awards from FAFSA are solely based upon income, and eligible students can receive grants, loans and/or work study awards.
If you have not applied you still have time to complete your FAFSA/ORSAA. (The ORSAA is the Oregon Student Aid Application for students who are undocumented or have DACA.) A great resource to contact is your student’s high school counselor, who can assist in completing the FAFSA application. Also, several schools are hosting financial aid activities that students and families can attend to complete their application and have any questions answered.
Information you need to complete your FAFSA
- Your Social Security number
- Your Alien Registration number (if you are not a U.S. citizen)
- Your federal income tax returns, W-2s, and other records of money earned. (Note: You may be able to transfer your federal tax return information into your FAFSA using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool.)
- Bank statements and records of investments (if applicable)
- Records of untaxed income (if applicable)
- An FSA ID to sign electronically.
Information you need to complete your ORSAA
- Date of birth for student and parent(s)
- Your federal income tax returns, W-2s, and other records of money earned. (Note: You may be able to transfer your federal tax return information into your FAFSA using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool.)
- Bank statements and records of investments (if applicable)
- Records of untaxed income (if applicable)
- Driver’s license number (if you have one)
Upcoming FAFSA/ORSAA activities at high schools:
- Franklin: Thursday, Feb 21, 9-11 a.m., in the College & Career Center.
- Roosevelt: FAFSA/ORSAA experts available Mondays 1-3 p.m., Fridays 9-11 a.m. in the counseling office.
