Sports update: Tight battle between Jefferson and Garfield highlights MLK Invitational
1/16/2018A tight game between top boys teams from Oregon and Washington highlighted the MLK Invitational on Monday. Jefferson, the defending Oregon state champion, gave Garfield of Seattle all it could handle before the Bulldogs held on for a 63-57 victory in a packed Lewis & Clark College gym.
Jefferson led 29-28 after a back-and-forth first half before Garfield, coached by former Trail Blazers star Brandon Roy, built a lead. The Democrats made a late charge, cutting their deficit to three points late, before Garfield pulled away.
Junior Marcus Tsohonis led Jefferson with 17 points, and senior Khalil Chatman added 16 points. Garfield junior Jamon Kemp, the son of former NBA star Shawn Kemp, led all players with 18 points.
Other highlights from the six-game event, hosted by the Portland Interscholastic League:
- The Roosevelt boys got a big win in the event opener, defeating Lake Oswego 77-64. The Roughriders got double-figure scoring from six players, with senior Bostyn Holt scoring 17 points, and junior Trevon Richmond adding 15 points.
- The Grant boys took a dominant win over Lakeridge, beating the Pacers 100-59. Junior Aaron Deloney made five 3-pointers and scored 31 points, and senior Kelton Samore added 24 points for the Generals, whose only losses to an in-state team have been to Jefferson. Grant ends the regular season against Jefferson on Friday, Feb. 16, in a game moved to the Chiles Center because of the high interest.
- The Grant girls fell behind big against Clackamas, but made a late charge before losing 62-51. Clackamas, considered one of the top teams in the state, rushed out to a 14-1 lead and led 45-21 in the third quarter. But Grant made a charge behind junior Daryn Hickok, who scored 13 of her 22 points in the fourth quarter, when the Generals cut their deficit to eight before Clackamas put the win away.
- Southridge beat Benson 62-45 in a matchup up the top two girls teams in the state. The Techsters struggled against Southridge’s full-court pressure and committed eight turnovers in the first quarter and fell behind 18-10, and the defending state champion Skyhawks rolled behind senior Maggie Freeman’s 25 points. Benson, which suffered its first loss to a team from Oregon, got 12 points from junior Taylor LyDay.
