Mt. Tabor’s Matthew Bacon-Brenes named 2018 Oregon Teacher of the Year
Mt. Tabor Japanese immersion teacher Matthew Bacon-Brenes has been named Oregon’s 2018 Teacher of the Year.
On Tuesday, Oregon Deputy Superintendent of Public Instruction Salam Noor visited the school to bestow the state’s top teaching honor on Bacon-Brenes. Noor cited Bacon-Brenes’ innovative practices, passion for excellence, and strong commitment to student success.
Bacon-Brenes’ greatest impact has been in the Japanese immersion K-12 program at PPS over the past 20 years. His advocacy for the program has sustained its success, and has been life-changing for many students. Bacon-Brenes facilitates an annual, two-week Japanese Research Residency trip for 8th grade students, where they research themes around Japanese culture, history, and social science.
“Matt’s instructional leadership, unwavering work ethic, and deeply held beliefs around serving all children have been pillars of Mt. Tabor’s success,” said Jennifer Patterson, senior director of Franklin K-8 Schools for PPS. “His humility, humor, and easy going demeanor make it easy for colleagues to learn alongside him, and he has a magical influence on the effectiveness of his team.”
Each year, PPS Reconnection and Outreach Services works with more than 1,000 students who have left school without graduating.
PPS staff and volunteers go door-to-door encouraging students to re-enter school
On Saturday, September 16, dozens of PPS staff and volunteers fanned-out across Portland to knock on doors and reach out to students who have disconnected from school. These door-knockers invited students back to school and offered resources to help them re-engage with their education.

Board resolution supports DACA
The PPS Board has made it clear that the district supports “dreamers” – students and staff members who were brought to the United States at a young age by immigrant parents.
Residents of the Kenton Women’s Village will use the Grant lockers primarily for food storage, a critical need.
Lockers move from Grant High School to homeless village
Thirty lockers that used to hold books, jackets and selfie photos at Grant High School are being put to new use at the Kenton Women’s Village. And the fourteen homeless residents who live there are grateful.
“I appreciate it a lot,” said Lynette Engels. “The girls appreciate it.”
Damian Lillard talks RESPECT at Roosevelt
A visit by Portland Trail Blazers basketball star Damian Lillard helped ring in the new school year at Roosevelt High School. Lillard appeared at their back-to-school assembly and offered his support, telling students that sometimes it’s all about showing up.
After losing a critical game when he was a teenager, Lillard said, the expectation was players would take a day off to recover. Not Lillard. He was the only player to turn out for practice the next day.
R.E.S.P.E.C.T. find out what it means to Damian Lillard.
A SafeOregon button will be live on each school’s website over the next two weeks.
SafeOregon Tip Line to be added to all PPS schools
In keeping with our commitment to student safety, PPS will join school districts around the state in using the SafeOregon Tip Line. This is a new system that the Oregon Legislature funded as part of a statewide effort to improve school safety.
