Equity is a top priority for new Superintendent Guadalupe Guerrero
In one of his first district wide statements, PPS Superintendent Guadalupe Guerrero said he will continue to make equity a top priority.
“We are seeing many examples of inequities in our society,” Guerrero said, citing the violence at Charlottesville, uncertainty surround DACA students – the “Dreamers” – and other hate crimes that have occurred locally. “As your new superintendent, I am not going to shy away from these issues and events.”
Guerrero, who was Deputy Superintendent of Instruction, Innovation and Social Justice at San Francisco Unified School District, officially began as PPS’s top administrator on Monday. He said he plans to spend as much time as he can getting to know the district on a personal level.
“I want to know where we are excelling – and I want to know where we need to pay attention, because I know we can always do better,” he said. “One of the best ways to learn that is by visiting schools. You can expect that I will be visiting classrooms, talking to parents on the school yard and engaging with community members on a regular basis.”
"When you're young, they want you to decide what you want to be. I think you should just do everything that you love."
Film director Francis Ford Coppola talks filmmaking with students
Francis Ford Coppola, director of movies that include The Godfather series and The Outsiders, spent an hour Monday discussing cinema and literature with 100 students from Grant High.
Coppola’s visit was arranged through a partnership with Literary Arts, who works with visiting artists and authors to visit Portland schools while they're in town for paid speaking gigs.
The new Kellogg and Madison will be complete by 2021 and 2022.
Kellogg, Madison head up next round of school rebuilds
The PPS School Board has officially approved the order of the middle school and high school modernization projects from the May 2017 Bond.
The Office of School Modernization was already given the green light to start the design process for Kellogg Middle School and Madison High School by the Board shortly after the bond passed. Now the schedule for all four project schedules has been established.

Ever wonder where the computer mouse came from?
Wonder no more. Douglas Engelbart was a pioneer in human-computer interaction. In 1970, he designed a wooden box with wheels he called the “X-Y Position Indicator for a Display System.” He later patented it, and the “mouse” was born. Englebart received the 2000 President’s National Medal of Technology and is the inspiration for Englebart’s Law, the observation that the intrinsic rate of human performance is exponential.
“And when I saw those dogs on the news, I knew I had to do something to help.”
Grout School helps hurricane dogs
Every morning last week, students and families at Grout elementary were greeted at school drop-off by a staff member wearing dalmatian ears.
Tina LeBlanc is the media specialist for Grout and was horrified to see the number of dogs displaced from Texas and Florida in the wake of hurricanes Harvey and Irma.
We need visionary, comprehensive and equitable designs. Can you help?
Help design a new Kellogg Middle School
PPS is moving forward with construction of a new Kellogg Middle School and is seeking public input how it should be designed. The voter-approved bond is providing the funding for the project, and some preliminary internal design work already has begun. Now begins a two-year planning and design process that incorporates significant public engagement. The first step is to form a Kellogg Design Advisory Group.
