3/13/2018In this week's PPS Pulse: Grant’s title highlights PIL dominance in basketball; advice on health, safety
PORTLAND PUBLIC SCHOOLS | MARCH 13, 2018 Español | Tiếng Việt | 中文 | Русский | Soomaali Sports update: Grant boys’ title highlights huge week for PIL in state basketball
Last week’s OSAA Class 6A basketball tournaments turned into a showcase for the Portland Interscholastic League, which dominated the boys event and provided several historic moments in the girls tournament. The highlights:
Grant wins in a thriller: In the fourth installment of 2017-18’s most intense high school basketball rivalry, Grant defeated Jefferson 63-62 in the boys championship game at a sold-out Chiles Center on Saturday. The Generals, who had lost three close games to Jefferson earlier in the season, won the fifth state championship in program history and first since 2008. Their other titles came in 1969, 1986, 1988 and 2008.
Health Pulse: Your child may be eligible for no-cost Oregon Health Plan insurance
Each month, the Multnomah County Health Centers will offer advice related to health for students and families. Today’s topic: the Oregon Health Plan.
Does your child need health insurance? If so, it could be worth looking into the Oregon Health Plan.
Many families don’t know that the family income thresholds for children under 19 are three times higher than those for adults, meaning many youth qualify for the Oregon Health Plan even if their parents are not eligible. For example, a single parent with one child can make up to $50,208 and still have a child is eligible for the Oregon Health Plan.
Board report: Resolution takes stand on guns and student safety
The Portland Public Schools Board of Education passed a resolution calling for lawmakers to strengthen laws dealing with guns and student safety in the wake of last month’s mass shooting at a Florida high school.
By a 7-0 vote at its March 6 meeting, the Board adopted Resolution 5606. Among the resolution’s nine parts are a call for banning the manufacture, sale, purchase, possession and use of semiautomatic weapons; a call to require and strengthen universal background checks for all firearms; and opposition to the arming of teachers.
The resolution was shepherded by Board member Amy Kohnstamm, who consulted with the Council of Great City Schools. The council is made up of the nation’s 68 largest school districts, including Broward County in Florida, where Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, site of last month’s shooting, is located. The organization represents about 7 million students.
My Voice: Moses Tran
In this edition of My Voice, Benson High School senior Moses Tran talks about his experience as a leader in his community through his volunteer work at Roseway Heights School’s second-grade Vietnamese dual language classroom. Tran also serves as student representative on the PPS Board of Education, and is president of the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council (aka SuperSAC).
Sabin students and staff join police in Electric Slide
At Sabin K-8 School the students and staff will tell you “We’re Electric!” So the school teamed up with the Portland Police Bureau to show off their “Electric Slide” dance moves. Staff, students and Portland officers, including Chief Danielle Outlaw, took to the streets in front of the school to share their Sabin pride with the community.

Oregon Professional Educator FairStudent safety: What parents can do
With last month’s school shooting in Florida, the issue of school safety is again in headlines. Keeping kids safe should be a priority for any adult involved with students, and parents have a big role to play.
George Weatheroy, Director of Security Services for PPS, offered six tips for parents.
Most likely to succeed: Shoni Schimmel, Franklin High School, 2009
Schimmel has become one of the most prominent Native American athletes in the country. Raised on the Umatilla Indian Reservation in Eastern Oregon, she moved Franklin to help her basketball career and became a high school and college All-American, and helped Louisville reached the 2013 NCAA Championship game. As a professional, Schimmel has twice been chosen for the WNBA All-Star Game and was the game’s MVP in 2014 as a rookie.
Leadership summit seeks to shape state education policy for equity
The 3rd Annual Teaching with Purpose Leadership Summit will be held on Saturday, March 24, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Concordia University’s Hagen Center.
The event will involve teachers, administrators, parents, students and community members who will discuss and work on implementing new equity laws, assessments and integrating innovative curriculum and practice. The event will provide specific recommendations for bills and resources to inform the 2019 session of the Oregon Legislature.
