Current Friday Family Announcement

CURRENT FRIDAY FAMILY ANNOUNCEMENT

Friday 4/30/2021

Dear Families,

We are beginning the process of writing new vision and mission statements for our school and would like you to be a part of the process! A vision statement articulates where we as a school community aspire to be, while a mission statement provides an overview of the steps planned or strategies used to achieve the vision. Once written, our vision and mission statements will help us establish priorities and inform our decisions. One of the first steps in this process is to reach out to hear about the values that our students, staff, and community hold. We want to hear about the values that you hold dear in order to ensure that our work is centered on what matters most to you. Please join me on Thursday, May 6th at 6:00 pm. meet.google.com/paa-ggtu-cjj  We will use an activity taken from the work of Elena Aguilar, author of The Art of Coaching and Onward. Last spring PPS partnered with Elena to deepen our understanding of Social Emotional Learning and Equity.

I look forward to our time together!

Be Safe! Be Well!

Principal Pam

Impact of Memorial Day on All Schedules

Since Monday, May 31st is a no school holiday for Memorial Day, we will be shifting Cohort days for all grades and there will be no Asynchronous day that week. For standard K-5 schedules, students will attend in-person on Tuesday-Friday.

SCHOOL PICTURES Tuesday, May 4th!

Tuesday is our school’s picture day!  This is for ALL students, whether in CDL or In-Person. Our at-home CDL learners (and ONLY our CDL learners) can sign up for an after-school hours picture time here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0D4BAFA828A5FAC61-llewellyn

See the attached flier for more information:Picture Day Reminder - Llewellyn Elementary.pdf

Remember! The picture order form is online for both CDL and In-person students. We will NOT be sending home picture packets this year.

School Next Year (2021-22)

Many have asked what the plan is for school next year.  According to our Superintendent, the current plan is for students to attend school five days per week, all day.  I have not heard if there will be a CDL option available yet. This will depend on the COVID metrics in our county. Let’s keep doing our part to keep COVID cases down! In the meantime, the 2021-22 calendar has been released. PPS_Calendar_2021-22_English.pdf

As we plan for next year, we are hoping to gather information about which students will be returning to school at Llewellyn and allow you to share your thoughts about the environment in which your child is the most successful. Please look for emails from the school containing Google Forms that will allow you to provide us with this information.

From the Library:

Llewellyn 2nd and 3rd graders will get a special visit (online) from graphic novelist Aron Nels Steinke on May 5.  His clever book series, Mr. Wolf's Class, is appropriate for all elementary students.  Green Bean Books is providing this free author visit in lieu of 30 copies of any Aron Nels Steinke book being purchased by the Llewellyn community. If you would like to purchase a signed copy of one of his books for our library or yourself, please see this order form. In the section “Calculate Shipping Cost” please choose “Pick up at Llewellyn Elementary - Author Visit Only $0.00”. Thank you for your support!

To learn more about this great book series and author, visit the webpage, https://www.mrwolfsclass.com/.

Plan ahead for a Llewellyn Harry Potter Celebration online!  On Wed. May 19, all students will be invited to celebrate all things Harry. We'll dress as a favorite character, play Harry Potter-related trivia and Bingo games, and try to do Readers Theater of some favorite scenes.  Practice your favorite spell or brush on your Quidditch game, but regardless, come to have fun with J.K. Rowling's epic book series!  Link will be in on the Library Seesaw page.

Any Questions, let Ms. Gilkey, Teacher-Librarian, know at ngilkey@pps.net.

From our Music Teacher:

Hello from ZWB and George!

The past few weeks, we have been learning some pretty fun things in Music. Third, fourth and fifth grade have been learning to play the spoons. We have been loving it so much that kids have asked that we have spoons to play at school next year! Kindergarten, first and second grade have been learning about instruments of the orchestra in their Seesaw lessons by members of our very own Oregon Symphony. They have been singing songs, reading rhythms and having a lot of musical fun in our live lessons.

I am excited to announce that we will be beginning a new Music schedule next week starting on Monday, May 3rd. This will allow us to bring more grade level students together and give us more options to make music together. This schedule goes along with the changes in the PE schedule.

One of the special additions to the Music schedule is a Recorder Club on Wednesday mornings at 9:30am (Google Meet Code: zwbrc). This is open to any 4th or 5th graders who have been missing playing this year and any 3rd graders that would like to learn. I have a few donated recorders at school for students that would like to learn recorder but need one. These were previously owned by former students. These will be available on a first-come first-served basis. Please email me at lzellerwilliams@pps.net if interested.

Another addition is an All School Sing-a-Long with ZWB and George on Wednesday afternoons at 1:00pm (Google Meet Code: zwb2021) . George and I will be sitting on my back porch and we will be leading students in songs we all can sing together. These will include songs I video recorded last spring and are available on YouTube (ZWB and George). We will include old favorites and new songs for all grades. Siblings can attend together and everyone is welcome to bring their instruments and play along (percussion and spoons highly recommended). Warning: SMILES and laughter may take place!

These additions will be running weekly through the end of the school year.Let's have fun making music together, Llewellyn!

From the Counselors

Happy almost May, everyone!

The Llewellyn counseling team is working on teaching identity lessons, and the first lesson included a really awesome book about diversity. We wanted to make sure everyone has an opportunity to hear the story, so if you would like to hear Ms. Allie read you a story about diversity and how our differences make the world a more awesome place, you can check it out here: "Be Different, Be Kind" - a read aloud (it is a little less than 9 minutes long). We will also be posting the video with an accompanying activity to our Seesaw - check it out!

From our School Nurse

All Oregonians age 16 and older are eligible now to receive COVID-19 vaccine as of April 19.  The Oregon Health Authority has a web page OHA vaccine finder website. It lists drive through clinics, vaccine events and pharmacies that have the vaccine.

You may have questions about the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines and the CDC has a good website for Understanding mRNA vaccines   A few facts about COVID-19 mRNA Vaccines from this CDC website:

  • They cannot give someone COVID-19.  mRNA vaccines do not use the live virus that causes COVID-19.  They do not affect or interact with our DNA in any way.   mRNA never enters the nucleus of the cell, which is where our DNA (genetic material) is kept.  The cell breaks down and gets rid of the mRNA soon after it is finished using the instructions.

For Hybrid learning please remember the Daily illness self-screening checklist.  Students and staff that become ill at school will be evaluated.

PPS has hybrid learning questions in various languages

May Walk + Roll Challenge Month

May is Walk and Roll Challenge Month! Things look different for students this year, so there are multiple ways for you and your students to participate.

Bike to School Day is on May 5!: Encourage your student to ride to school if they are learning in person! If they are learning at home, consider taking a bike ride around the neighborhood.

Walk + Roll Art Contest:  Our friends at ODOT are hosting an art contest! Winners will have their art featured on digital backgrounds and in a future ad campaign such as on a billboard or on the side of a bus! Open to Oregon students from K-8. Entries are due by June 15. For more info to help your students enter, visit this page

Bike to Books Digital Design Contest: Bike to Books was launched in 2017 by PBOT and Multnomah County Library to encourage kids to bike more and read books. Every May, as part of Bike Month, we invite students living in Multnomah County to design bike lane art for Portland’s “Bike to Books” design contest. This year, you can either pick up an entry form at your local Multnomah County library branch or print it off at home. You can find the entry form on our website.

From Our Community Partners:

SMILE, the Sellwood Moreland Improvement League, is our neighborhood association (and the oldest NA in Portland!). It is managed by a Board of Directors elected by us — neighborhood residents. This year the board election will happen (online and at the SMILE Station) on May 5th and 6th with five open at-large board positions and four officers on the ballot. If you live, work, or own property in the neighborhood you are automatically a SMILE member and eligible to serve on the Board and vote in our election.

As a volunteer-run organization, we’re dependent on the energy of our neighbors to promote our long traditions of civic engagement and community-building. We want the board members who represent the diverse makeup of our community. If you love Sellwood-Moreland, please consider throwing your hat in the ring and run for a position on the SMILE Board. Here are five good reasons:

  1. You’ll have a strong voice with the City, County and State on land use, transportation, environmental and other issues that affect our neighborhood.

  2. You’ll gain experience serving on a non-profit Board with responsibility for employees, budgets, investments, facilities management and more. (SMILE manages two rental properties — the SMILE Station at SE 13th/Tenino and Oaks Pioneer Church at SE 6th/Spokane).

  3. You’ll help plan neighborhood events ranging from music concerts to habitat protection.

  4. You’ll connect with neighbors from a wide variety of backgrounds and life experiences.

  5. You’ll help keep Sellwood-Moreland the special place it is to live and work.

Interested? Questions? Find information at https://sellwood.org/2021-smile-board-election-information/.

Big thanks!
