Woodstock Newsletter - February 17, 2023

Hello Woodstock Families,

Although things around the school are much quieter on these non-school days, we know it can be a good opportunity for students to have a break and recharge. We also hope it creates some time for positive connections with families and friends. The last month and a half has felt really busy, but we also have a lot ahead of us too, so hopefully the extended weekend will provide a nice break and help us return to our focus on learning when we return on Tuesday.

Some of the behind the scenes work that has happened over the past couple of weeks has been the preliminary planning for our 2023-2024 school year staffing. Although we are still in the planning stages, I’m hoping to provide some early projections on Woodstock staffing for next school year at our upcoming Coffee Conversation on March 1 at 8:20 AM. (We are also looking at holding an evening Coffee Conversation on the same day at 6:00 PM for families unable to attend in the morning. Please be on the lookout for more information in the coming weeks.)

Have a good weekend and we will see you next week.

With Woodstock Pride,

Seth Johnson, Principal

Woodstock Elementary

Successful Schools Survey

PPs has officially kicked-off the 2023 Successful Schools Survey. All families should have received an email with an invitation to the Family Survey Link.

Our district values your feedback! In the coming weeks, we will be asking you to take a brief survey to tell us about your experience with Woodstock and Portland Public Schools. To ensure we continue to provide high quality, rigorous learning experiences that meet the needs of our learners and prepare them for college and career, we need your feedback. We want to know what you think. The survey is open through February 28.

We thank you in advance for your thoughtful responses. If you have any questions about the survey administration, please don’t hesitate to contact us at WoodstockAttend@pps.net

Tree Planting

On Monday second grade students were able to plant several trees on our Woodstock School campus as part of a partnership with the Urban Forestry Department with the City of Portland. The Woodstock School Garden Committee, chaired by Woodstock Teacher Jesse Hunter, spearheaded this project. The Urban Forestry program will be responsible for watering the trees during the first three years of their growth.

Prior to the planting day, Molly Wilson from Urban Forestry gave a presentation to students and they learned about all the ways that trees are important from helping to address climate change to lowering anxiety levels. Additionally, students learned about the difference between evergreen and deciduous trees.

The Woodstock School Garden Committee is currently working to create high-quality educational signs that will be posted with the trees to provide information including. We hope that these trees are an educational resource not only for students but for the whole community.

Click here for a map of the trees and here for a photo album of the tree planting.
