She is looking forward to meeting parents and students. Here are some dates and times she will be at Lewis:

    Monday, May 15

    • 3:00-6:00pm, Library - I will be at Lewis to talk with any parents and staff who would like to drop by to ask questions or to share your thoughts on how Emily can help provide the best possible learning environment for your children.

    Thursday, May 18

    • 3:00-5:00pm - I will be attending your PTA event and available to talk to parents.

In the coming days, Helen and Emily will provide you with information about other dates and times that Emily will be at Lewis to engage with staff, parents, and students as well as to help prepare for a fantastic start to the 2017-18 school year.

    Dear Lewis Community,

I am pleased to announce that Emily Glasgow will be the new principal of Lewis Elementary School. She replaces Helen Nolen, who came out of retirement to serve as interim principal for the 2016-17 school year, and is going back into retirement.

Emily brings a wealth of experience to her new role as principal of Lewis, having served as principal of Vestal K-8 since 2013. At Vestal she oversaw the initial implementation of the Equity Based Balanced Literacy Adoption. She instituted Positive Behavior Intervention & Support, and helped the school transition toward inclusive practices. Emily was instrumental in working with community partners to bring support programs like SUN Community School, Playworks, Reading Results, Blosser Center, and Restorative Justice to Vestal.

Before joining PPS in 2013, she had been principal of Franklin D. Roosevelt K-8 School in Hyde Park, Mass., from 2006-2013, and also was a third grade teacher in the Oakland Unified School District in Oakland, CA. She also served in several intern and fellowship roles in the Boston Public School District.

Emily maintains that to teach children well, teachers and administrators must know children well. She has made it her goal to know every Lewis student by name before January, and hopes to meet as many of them as possible this spring to get a head start on that challenge.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Amherst College, a Master’s of Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and is currently enrolled in the Doctor of Education Program at Lewis and Clark College. A Portland native and graduate of Lincoln High School, Emily has two children attending PPS, and enjoys reading and cooking.

Please join me in welcoming Emily to her new role at Lewis.

    Bob McKean
