  • Dear Faubion Families,

I love taking this time to reflect upon the wonders of the New Year.  Watching your children flourish with the guidance of the fantastic teachers at Faubion School is a true blessing.  While visiting classrooms, I witness children who are engaged and excited about their learning.  I am very proud of the children and teachers at Faubion, and I look forward to more great things in 2017.

As we look ahead to 2017 there are many exciting things on the horizon!  The biggest is that we will be returning to our newly constructed school over the summer and will be having a Grand Opening in late August 2017 to celebrate.  Please be watching for a “Save the Date” card!

Faubion’s Family leadership committee has asked that the Faubion community think about adopting school uniforms for students in PK through 8th grade in 2017.  This idea was surfaced after families expressed displeasure over the new, much more lenient, dress code passed by the Portland School Board over summer 2016.  Please go to Faubion’s webpage to view a PowerPoint discussing uniforms which was presented at the January Muffins with Principal McCalley.  **This file will be posted as soon as school resumes!**  Attached to this letter is a fact sheet about school uniforms.

The Parent Leadership Committee also has created a survey that they would like Faubion families to complete about school uniforms.  It is available electronically at:  We will also send home paper copies with this letter to every family.  Completed surveys are due to Faubion by January 23, 2017.  Results from the survey will be compiled and presented at February’s Muffins with Ms. McCalley and next steps will be determined at that point.

We also are launching a Bulldog Brag Sheet that will accompany this newsletter each month to highlight some of the amazing things going on at Faubion.  Please let us know if you have something you would like included on the next Bulldog Brag Sheet!

I hope that you and your family have a wonderful 2017 filled with good health and blessings.

    Yours in Education,

Principal McCalley and Assistant Principal Williams

The Portland Public Schools Board of Directors voted unanimously last night to approve boundary changes to Peninsula and Chief Joseph schools, both feeder schools for Ockley Green Middle School. The 7-0 vote endorses one of two proposals from the District-wide Boundary Review Advisory Committee (DBRAC), which was formed in 2014 to help with enrollment balancing across Portland Public Schools.
  • Nine of our schools earn EPA’s ENERGY STAR rating

At a ceremony on February 10 at Wilson High School in SW Portland, nine PPS schools were recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for achieving ENERGY STAR certification. To receive this certification, a building must perform in the top 25% of similar facilities nationwide for energy efficiency, and meet strict energy efficiency performance levels set by the EPA. ENERGY STAR schools use an average of 35% less energy, and also release 35% less carbon dioxide.

  • Enrollment balancing for Peninsula, Chief Joseph and Ockley Green

The District-wide Boundary Review Advisory Committee (DBRAC) was formed in 2014 to help with enrollment balancing across Portland Public Schools. The committee’s most recent work led them to propose two options to help relieve crowding at Chief Joseph and to create more robust enrollment at Peninsula starting in the 2017-18 school year. On January 30, 2017, Interim Superintendent Bob McKean endorsed one of two DBRAC proposals.

The proposal, which still requires the approval of the Board of Education, may be reviewed at,
