The district receives reduced-tuition vouchers from PSU each term for every licensed educator who hosts a student teacher, school counseling intern, or administrator intern from PSU. These vouchers are offered to the cooperating teacher, school counselor, or administrator who earned them; in some cases, the cooperating educator will choose not to claim their voucher. In this case, all the unused reduced-tuition vouchers will be made available via lottery to the district’s licensed educators (expect for temporary and substitute teachers). Those educators who are eligible to enter the lottery will notified by email.
How does the voucher lottery work?
If a cooperating teacher does not claim their voucher by a deadline or otherwise lets HR know that they will not be using their voucher, it is entered into the voucher lottery for that term. Please keep in mind that if all vouchers are claimed by the cooperating teachers or administrators who earn them, there will not be a voucher lottery that term.
When there are unclaimed vouchers, all eligible licensed educators will receive an email with instructions on how to enter the voucher lottery. Each employee may only enter the lottery one time per term. The lottery will be open for five business days; once the lottery is closed, all entries will be put through an online randomizer. Those who are at the top of the randomly-generated list will be notified via email that they have received a voucher. Those who are not selected will also receive notification that all vouchers have been dispersed; they will be put on a waitlist in the event that someone who received a voucher is unable to use it.
When and how often is the voucher lottery?
It is possible that vouchers will be available for winter, spring, and summer terms. There will never be vouchers available for fall term.
Please keep in mind that if all vouchers for a given term are claimed by the cooperating teachers or administrators who earned them, there will not be a voucher lottery.
What are the odds of receiving a voucher through the lottery?
If there are unclaimed vouchers for a lottery, there are typically between 30 and 100 reduced-tuition vouchers that remained unclaimed during the winter, spring, and summer terms. There are roughly 3,000 licensed educators who are eligible to enter a given lottery.
How much tuition do the vouchers cover?
Reduced-tuition vouchers are available in 3-credits and 5-credits. Each voucher will cover 2/3rds of the cost of tuition; the employee who redeems the vouchers must cover the rest of the cost.
If I receive a voucher, can I give it to a colleague or family member?
No, vouchers must be redeemed by the person to whom they are issued.
At which universities can these vouchers be redeemed?
Vouchers come with varying restrictions but are generally redeemable at all Oregon state-sponsored schools of higher education: Eastern Oregon University, Oregon Institute of Technology, Oregon State University, Portland State University, Southern Oregon University, and University of Oregon.
It is at the discretion of each Oregon University System institution listed to accept these PSU vouchers (or not). All of the OUS institutions listed above were involved in the sharing of vouchers previously, but they may choose not to participate at any time. If you are planning to take a course at a university listed above that is not PSU, please check with their registrar to ensure that they will accept the voucher before entering the lottery.
I really need a reduced-tuition voucher. Is there anything I can do to ensure that I get one?
Yes! Consider hosting a student teacher in your classroom. If you have been a licensed teacher for three years, please discuss this opportunity with your administrator. If a teacher hosts a student teacher from PSU, you will be guaranteed a reduced-tuition voucher. More information about student teaches can be found here: Student Teachers/Interns in PPS.
Beyond earning your own voucher, there is no other way to weight your request for the voucher lottery.
