• ACCESS Academy Teacher Will Explore Ocean Floor as Part of Fellowship

    ACCESS Academy teacher Alfonso Garcia Arriola will spend two weeks aboard the E/V Nautilus.

    Dr. Alfonso Garcia Arriola, a teacher at ACCESS Academy, will help explore and map the ocean floor as part of a fellowship with the Ocean Exploration Trust (OET). He earned one of 12 spots from a competitive pool of educators and communicators who applied.

    Garcia Arriola will join the group aboard the E/V Nautilus, a 64-meter research vessel, during its voyage through the central Pacific Ocean. The crew will use remotely-operated and autonomous vehicles, and seafloor mapping technologies. Garcia Arriola’s journey, which was originally planned for 2020 but deferred because of the pandemic, will run from October 10 to 24.

    OET, a nonprofit founded by Dr. Robert Ballard in 2008, operates E/V Nautilus with a mission to explore the ocean, seeking out new discoveries in the fields of geology, biology, maritime history, archaeology, physics and chemistry while pushing the boundaries of STEAM education and technological innovation.

    “I am thrilled to participate in this expedition, collaborate with scientists and bring my students and school community to a greater understanding of the nature of science and the exciting world of ocean exploration,” said Garcia Arriola, who teaches science in grades 7 and 8 at ACCESS.
