  • Kellogg History

Kellogg opened as a K-8 school in 1913 and was converted to a middle school in 1980. In 2006 Kellogg was closed in part due to poor facility conditions and insufficient ADA accessibility. Between 2008 and 2015, Kellogg was used for storage, district professional development, and student testing. In 2015, Kellogg was proposed to reopen as part of a district-wide boundary review process.

The Design Advisory Group first met in October 2017 with the architecture team from Oh Planning and Design. They met over a nine-month period and their design conversations ranged anywhere from school locker location to bike rack location, and a wishlist including solar panels. After thoroughly reviewing options and costs the design team determined it would be much less expensive to rebuild Kellogg Middle School than to modernize the existing 100 year old buiilding. A new building would also allow for more modern options for facilities and educational spaces. Around the same time the DAG completed their process, the demolition of the old school building began.

Kellogg Middle School was the first new middle school to be built for Portland Public Schools in 50 years. The school reopened in September 2021 after a two year construction phase and multiyear design process that engaged the community. The school has been designed to enhance the learning experience for students and be a focal point of its Southeast Portland neighborhood. Built sustainably and to last 100 years, it also features a gym and commons stable enough to withstand an earthquake.
