    Jason Lee families,
Thank you to all of the families that joined us for our virtual coffee connections. It was great to share with parents our current distance learning plan, and to hear from them what else might be helpful as we navigate this new digital world.

  • Mr. Robertson Named Principal of Astor School

    Dear Jason Lee Families,

It is with great excitement, and a little bit of sadness, that I get to announce that our wonderful assistant principal, Mr. Robertson, has just been named the new principal of Astor School in North Portland! I’ve had the privilege of working with Mr. Robertson the past four years, and I’ve seen the dedication and heart that he’s brought to our school each and every day. From the moment the front doors open, Mr. Robertson’s enthusiasm and energy can be felt as he greets students and works to ensure that each and every one of them has what they need to be successful.

This is a bittersweet moment as the recent announcement of school closures means that we won’t be able to finish out the year as we had hoped to, with the opportunity to see our wonderful students and families in person each day. Mr. Robertson will, however, be working at Scott School every Wednesday and Friday this month to help deliver lunches and curriculum to students and families. You are welcome to stop by to say hello to him any of those days. He’d love to see you!

Although we will be miss him greatly, I am excited that Mr. Robertson gets to return to Astor School, as it is a community that is near and dear to his heart. Not only was he previously a teacher at Astor, but it is also the school where his own children attend, allowing him to see them each and every day.

I am honored to call Mr. Robertson a friend, and I look forward to seeing and hearing about the amazing things that he will do at his new school, and the many return visits that he’ll have to Jason Lee.

Please join me in giving a big congratulations to Mr. Robertson,
    Principal Cardona

  • Oregon Schools Closed The Remainder of the Academic Year

    Dear Jason Lee Families,

A short time ago, Governor Brown held a press conference to relay that Oregon schools, including Jason Lee, will remain closed the remainder of the academic year. I know what a challenging time this is for our parents, as they may be juggling unemployment, housing, being a first responder, working remotely, and the day-to-day hardships that come along with raising children. These are unprecedented times, but please know that all of the educators at Jason Lee are thinking of your and our students. If there is anything that you might need, please feel free to reach out to any of us and we will try to connect you with any resources that you might need.

We’ll be having a virtual Coffee Connections this Tuesday at 8:15 am. We welcome all parents to join us to talk about the remainder of the school year, what online distance learning will look like, and to just make space to gather as a community. One of the things that I love most about Jason Lee is the strength and support that we lend to one another in times of need. This challenge is no different, and I know that we’ll make it through this together.

We miss you all, we’re thinking of you, and we can’t wait until the day when we get to open the doors to our building once again.

  • Online Learning Starts Monday, April 6th

    Dear Jason Lee Families,

We’ve been thinking about you a ton the past few weeks and we hope that everyone has been able to stay safe and healthy during this time. Our teachers have been working hard to prepare for our transition to online learning, which begins this Monday, April 6th. In the first week, you can expect teachers to begin to build classroom systems and routines, and to get students accustomed to the online platforms we’ll be using, including Seesaw and Google Classroom.

For us, school is more than just the learning that occurs in classrooms, it’s also the community that we’ve built, and the traditions that make our school so special. Although our brick and mortar building is closed, we’ll continue to do daily morning announcements, to shout out birthdays, and to hold those big events that students look forward to, like our Talent Show and Leopard of the Month Awards Ceremony.

We know that this can be a difficult time for students, so we’re making Social Emotional Learning an important piece of the online work that we’ll be doing moving forward. Mr. Doherty, our school counselor, will continue to create lessons for students, and all teachers are taking part in a professional development on how to support students during this time.

Finally, we want to make sure that we’re engaging our parents too. We’ll still be having our Coffee Connections, although virtually, on Tuesday, April 14th, in addition to a new parent website that we’ve created to help you navigate the different online classrooms. You can find that here: https://sites.google.com/pps.net/jasonleeonline/home with some tutorials from Mr. Robertson on how to log on and access Seesaw or Google Classrooms.

As a parent myself, I know how stressful it can be to navigate this new normal - From keeping students engaged in learning while working yourself, to also keeping them active and healthy, even with having to stay inside most of the day. It’s difficult but you’re doing a good job! You have to believe that! We’ll look back on this time one day and have fond memories about all of the time that we got to spend with our kids.

We’re in this together, and I’m thankful that I get to continue working with this wonderful community year after year.

    Mr. Cardona
