Sports Update: 18 PIL teams earn Academic All-State honors; all-league awards, teams announced

CLOSEThe Portland Interscholastic League excelled not just on the field, court and trails during the fall sports season. PIL teams also stood out in the classroom.
The league placed 18 teams in the top 10 of their sports among all Class 6A schools in the OSAA OnPoint Community Credit Union Academic All-State Teams. The lists are compiled using cumulative grade-point average for each team’s varsity members.
The Grant boys soccer team took the top spot in its sport, with a 3.75 GPA. The Generals were one of five PIL teams to place in the top 10 in boys soccer. The Cleveland girls cross country team had the highest GPA among all PIL fall teams, at 3.95, which tied for third in its sport.

All-League teams announced
The PIL announced all-league teams and awards, as voted by coaches, for these sports:
Volleyball: Wilson, which won the PIL title with a 16-0 league record, swept the awards. Senior outside hitter Kennedy Stahr won the Player of the Year award, and Mark Mendak was voted the Coach the Year for the second consecutive year. See the full all-league list
Boys Soccer: Cleveland junior Mo Mohamed and Lincoln senior Chris Lambert shared the Offensive Player of the Year award, and Grant senior Ian Cameron and Franklin junior Vincent Rose were voted co-Defensive Players of the Year, with Cameron sharing the honor for the second year in a row. Franklin’s Ty Kovatch was voted the Coach the Year after sharing the award last year. See the full all-league list
Girls Soccer: Grant senior Ruby Donaghu was select the Offensive Player of the Year, and Wilson senior goalkeeper Olivia Williams was voted the Defensive Player of the Year. Roosevelt’s Jennifer Lohse was voted Coach of the Year by her colleagues. See the full all-league list
