    Teachers give students a daily musical send-off at Arleta

    If you don’t know what a melodica is, ask a student at Arleta K-8 School. Every afternoon two language arts teachers entertain students -- Mr. Flagel on guitar and Mr. Cooke on a crazy tubed wind generated keyboard – providing tunes as middle schoolers leave for the day. The teachers appreciate the calmness the music brings, and the students simply love to groove to the music, creating a memorable end to a day of learning.

    $2.8 million grant will help PPS shape math instruction for K-5 students

    The project is called Developing Leaders, Transforming Practice – or DLTP. While the name might imply a complicated academic process, the project’s goal can be summed in the words of Portland State University professor Nicole Rigelman: “Deeper understanding of math for your children.”
