Sellwood Principal’s Newsletter – June 16, 2023

Greetings Sellwood Community,

On the last week of this school year, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the journey we've been on together. It has been a year filled with challenges, growth, and most importantly, a strong sense of community.

First and foremost, I would like to thank our wonderful Sellwood families for their partnership throughout the year.  Your dedication to our school community has been remarkable, and we are truly fortunate to have you as our valued partners.

I also want to express my gratitude to our amazing students. Your resilience, adaptability, and commitment to learning have been truly inspiring. Despite the obstacles that came our way, you continued to show up, ready to engage, and eager to make the most of every opportunity. Your enthusiasm and dedication have made this school year great.

Next, I want to extend my appreciation to our exceptional teachers. You have gone above and beyond, navigating uncharted waters and finding innovative ways to keep our students engaged and connected. Your tireless efforts have made a significant impact on our students' academic and personal growth.

I would also like to give a special shout-out to our incredible PTA. Your dedication and support have been instrumental in creating a positive and enriching environment for our students. Your efforts in organizing events, fundraising, and advocating for our school community have not gone unnoticed. We are grateful for your commitment to enhancing our students' educational experience.

Additionally, I want to express our sincere gratitude to the Foundation for their invaluable support. Through their generous funding, we have been able to provide a wide range of elective classes, such as French, technology, and cooking. These opportunities have allowed our students to explore their passions and interests, fostering a love for lifelong learning. The Foundation's contribution has truly enriched our school community, and we are immensely grateful for their partnership.

Looking ahead, please be on the lookout for individual student schedules, which will be mailed to you in mid-July.

Bidding farewell to our 8th graders, I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes as they embark on their high school journey. They have grown into remarkable individuals, and we have no doubt that they will continue to thrive and achieve great things. We will miss them dearly and are grateful for the lasting impact they have made on our school community.

To our 6th and 7th graders, we eagerly await your return on August 30th. The new school year will bring fresh opportunities, new friendships, and a chance for further growth and exploration.

Finally, as we enter the summer break, I wish each and every one of you a safe, relaxing, and joy-filled summer. May this time be an opportunity for rest, rejuvenation, and creating cherished memories with your loved ones. Thank you for your continued partnership, support, and trust in our school. It is truly an honor to serve as your principal, and I look forward to the great things we will accomplish together in the future.

Sincerely,

Jeandré Carbone

THE SELLWOOD FOUNDATION

As we head into summer I just wanted to take a moment to thank the Sellwood Middle School Community for your generous support of the Foundation. This year we held two in person events and ran the Annual Giving Campaign.  After two years of not gathering, it was so fun to be able to socialize as a community while simultaneously raising money at the Petanque tournament and Drag Queen Bingo.  Together we raised over $95,000 that Principal Carbone will be able to use to hire additional teaching staff for the 2023-2024 school year.  We could not have done this without you and your support, so thank you very much! I also want to extend a big heartfelt thank you to the Foundation Board.  Without their work and volunteer hours, none of these events would have taken place.  Thank you to Trisha Highland, Trina Fowler, Molly Terpack, Janan Anderson, Britt Dawkins, Ashley Schmidt, and Katka Howland.  You are an inspiring group, and it has been my absolute pleasure to have worked with you all this year!

I wish everyone a restful, restorative, fun and safe summer break!
