    Sellwood Principal’s Newsletter – June 10, 2022

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

We have reached the final day of the 2021-22 school year.  Despite the many challenges, it was a school year full of learning, laughter, and love.

Today we celebrated 8th-grade promotion for our current 8th-graders.  Congratulations, high school class of 2026!  6th and 7th graders had a fun time at Oaks Park this morning as well.  We had some luck with the rain holding off till this afternoon!

We are currently finalizing student schedules for next year, and plan to send them in the mail next week.  More information about the upcoming school year will be forthcoming.

I wish you all a few months of rest, relaxation, and some old-fashioned fun.

    Enjoy the summer.

    Sincerely,

    Jeandré Carbone

    Sellwood Principal’s Newsletter – June 3, 2022

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

It has been an intense week of highs and lows. On the heels of two horrific mass shootings, Sellwood experienced a very upsetting and scary graffiti threat that will take some time to heal and recover from.

We also had the opportunity to welcome students and families to the building for our Spring Band Concert and our Showcase Night.  Both events were well attended and, after two years of COVID restrictions, it was lovely to see families in the school’s hallways once again.  Thanks to all of the teachers and students who shared their work with us.

Because only light can drive out darkness, I wanted to leave you with images from our final advisory session, where Sellwood students created the visuals of a peace sign and a heart out on our field.  Thank you to AP Diana Collins for the idea and the coordination, and custodian Scott Taylor for providing the drone and having the skills to capture these great images.

I hope you enjoy some peace this weekend.

    Sincerely,

    Jeandré Carbone

    FOUNDATION NEWS

We are 1/4 of the way to our $10,000 goal.  Help us reach it, for our kids!

Did you miss the Foundation Fall Fundraiser? A generous donor offered to match up to $50,000 and we still have $10,000 available to be matched, so let's do this for our kids!  The money we raise this Spring will go to teacher staffing for the 2022-2023 school year.  We hope to raise enough to hire Educational Assistants who will help provide additional supports for students needing educational interventions, in addition to supporting the French/Technology and Culinary Arts electives.  When parents and caregivers like you give back to our school, the Sellwood Foundation is able to help expand opportunities for all students.   Every donation counts, and thank you to those who have already donated!

    SOUTHEAST GUIDING COALITION NEWS

On May 24, the PPS Board of Education approved boundary and program changes for eighteen

Southeast schools. They also agreed to allow more time for a final decision on the future location of the English program for Lent neighborhood students who do not enroll in Spanish Immersion.

The changes will formally take effect in Fall 2023, and are designed to create a new middle school at Harrison Park, increase enrollment at Lane Middle School and small neighborhood elementary schools, and consolidate some Chinese and Spanish immersion programs.

Planning for successful change has already begun:

    • Individualized letters and emails will be sent this week to all impacted families with details about enrollment options. Please email enrollment-office@pps.net or call 503-916-3205 if you have any questions about how the changes will affect your student’s school assignment.
    • Over the next months school teams will work together with central departments to build new community connections and plan for a smooth transition.  We will continue to share updates on implementation through school newsletters and at https://www.pps.net/Page/13615.

We are grateful to the SE Guiding Coalition and many, many students, parents, staff and community members who shared ideas and concerns throughout the process.

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

I apologize for the late newsletter.  Things were so hectic last week I put the newsletter together and forgot to send it out!

    So sorry!

This week will be a busy one with Band Concert on Wednesday evening and Showcase Night on Thursday, from 5:30 to 8:00 PM.  Please follow the link for our Showcase Program which shows the times and locations of exhibits and events.  Thank you to 8th-grade block teacher Lisa Souther for her event organization and a great job creating the program.

Finally, I wanted to share a photo of Sellwood students standing together to protest gun violence.  With the horrendous recent mass shootings in Buffalo, New York and Uvalde, Texas. our students are a beacon of hope in dark times.

    Sellwood Principal’s Newsletter – April 29, 2022

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

It has been a while since I have written about COVID in this portion of the newsletter, but as you may have noted in the news, Multnomah County, and many other parts of the state and country are experiencing an increase in COVID cases.  The current COVID bump is not expected to be even close to the huge surge we lived through in January, but we should all be vigilant and alert to potential COVID symptoms in ourselves and children.  The primary symptoms of COVID are still officially listed as fever, cough, shortness of breath, loss of taste and smell.  However, every single person I know who has had Omicron has experienced sore throat as the first symptom along with headache, tiredness, a runny nose, with a cough developing later. It is very difficult to distinguish from the common cold.  To make things more confusing, the common cold is also circulating in our community.  Please play it safe.  If your child has symptoms, please keep them home.  Also, in the first few days of a COVID infection, it is not unusual for at-home rapid tests to show false negatives when there is not enough viral load to show positive.  If you really suspect COVID and the rapid test is negative, a PCR test is very sensitive and can detect the smallest amount of the virus.  Let the school  know if your child tests positive. Please help us to curtail the spread.

This Oregon spring has been one of the rainiest on record, but Sunday is looking like a great day to get outside.

I hope you enjoy the weekend, whatever you decide to do!

IMMUNIZATION DEADLINE EXTENDED TO APRIL 20th

The deadline to submit proof of required vaccinations has been extended to April 20th. If your student is incomplete with a vaccination/s, the MESD immunization department will mail you a letter that states the exact one your student is incomplete on.  You can take that letter, that also comes with a CIS form, to your doctor to fill out and sign after they receive the vaccination.

The easiest way for parents to give us that information, is to just bring in the CIS form/vaccination form or bring in a note from the doctor's office that states the vaccination is now up to date.  One of our secretaries will give the proof of vaccination to the health office.

We are pleased to announce the return of a long-standing Sellwood tradition, Showcase Night, Thursday, June 2nd, from 5:30-8:30.  Showcase Night is a drop-in event, where Sellwood students display their school projects from the year.  There will be displays of artwork, music, academic projects from science, social studies, math, English language arts, world languages and more.  We have more fun idea in the works such as: food carts, an egg drop game, a photo booth with props, etc.  It is a fun event for the whole Sellwood community.  Come spend a half-hour, an hour, or even three hours!  We hope to see you there.

    OAKS PARK TRIPS

This year, the end-of-year class trips for all grade levels will be Oaks Park.  (In past years, 8th-graders have gone to Bullwinkles, but this year Bullwinkles is only open in the evenings during the last week of school.)

    Here are some more details

    • When

8th-grade – Tuesday, June 7th, Time of Day TBD

    1. 9:30 – Noon (Reminder: Early dismissal at 12:30)
    • Transportation:  We will be walking both to and from the park.   Make sure to wear comfortable shoes!  All students will return to Sellwood for school dismissal; no exceptions.
    • Cost$15.00 will include Adrenalin Peak Roller Coaster, Go-Carts, Atmosphere (new ride).
      • Preferred payment on-line with School Pay.
      • Option 2: Checks payable to Sellwood Middle School
      • Option 3: Cash in the exact amount (Exact amount; no change provided).
      • If this presents a financial hardship, scholarships are available.
    • Lunch:  Students may: 1. Bring a sack lunch, 2. Request a Sellwood sack lunch or 3. purchase lunch at OAKS Park.  We have a reserved a Picnic Area (students can leave their lunch here during the day).

    • Other Costs:  Students can bring extra money for snacks, games. etc.

We will be in need of adult chaperones for the trips to Oaks Park, so please think about whether or not you might be able to volunteer.  There will be an opportunity to sign-up soon, probably through the PTA and Konstella.  Permission slips will be going home with students before the end of April.

    8TH-GRADE PROMOTION

This year, we are excited to announce Sellwood’s in-person 8th-grade Promotion Celebration, at 10:30 AM on Friday, June 10th.  The promotion program will take place outdoors on the field, partly due to COVID concerns, and partly due to the gym not being large enough to accommodate 8th-graders and their families, even in pre-COVID times.

In case of significant rain (more than a few sprinkles) the ceremony will be moved indoors to the gym, with a limit of two guests per 8th-grader.

Please bring a blanket or low concert chair for seating.

We plan to have speeches, a certificate ceremony, cake or cupcakes, musical performances, photography, and more!

We will soon begin recruiting 8th-grade parent volunteers to help prepare for the celebration as well as 7th-grade parent volunteers to help out the day of the ceremony (so that 8th-grade parents can relax and enjoy the celebration with their families).  We think that 7th-grade parents helping out during 8th-grade promotion is a great rite-of-passage tradition, as their children are now rising 8th-graders.

8th-graders and families will receive more detailed information in the upcoming weeks.

REQUIRED SCHOOL IMMUNIZATIONS - FROM THE NURSE’S OFFICE

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

Earth Day is April 22nd this year.  Students, staff, and parent volunteers will be involved in cleaning up the grounds periodically throughout the month during advisory period.  Read the PTA news blurb below to find out how you can get involved.   Also, we have a few reusable gloves and some trash pickers for student use, but if your child has their own garden gloves, I encourage you to have them bring them to school on their day to help with the clean-up.  Refer to the Earth Day Clean-up slides to find out your student’s clean-up day.

    Sellwood Principal’s Newsletter – March 13, 2022

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

I apologize for the late newsletter.  I was away from the office last Monday through Wednesday and am only now just catching up.

It is hard to believe that two years ago today, due to concerns about the new COVID-19 virus, we began our “extended two-week spring break” which continued for longer than any of us could imagine.

Tomorrow, masks will be optional on school buses and at school.  COVID transmission in Multnomah County is low (9 per 100,000) and hospitalizations continue to drop.  Levels of immunity are high, either through vaccination, infection, or both.  Effective anti-viral treatments such as Paxlovid are becoming more widely available.  Risk of COVID-19 transmission at school is very low, and we will continue with other mitigations strategies such as improved air flow and filtration, hand washing, and outdoor lunch and recess when weather permits.

However, while some students and staff are elated to not have to wear a mask, others are feeling concerned or even scared.  Some in our community may be immunocompromised or live with someone who is at risk.  Others have become accustomed to wearing a face covering and don’t yet feel comfortable without one.

Please remind your children to show grace and kindness to those who choose differently from them.

    • It is ok to wear a face covering.
    • It is ok to not wear a face covering.

The year is passing quickly, and spring break is one week away.  We are starting to plan our end of the year events.  This week, staff will be discussing ideas for 8th-grade promotion and the Bullwinkles trip (dates and times TBD), and other traditions such as the Ambassador Awards (evening - May 12th), Showcase Night (June 9th) and OAKS Park for 6th and 7th graders on June 10th

We will be coming up with a few different scenarios for 8th-grade promotion and the Bullwinkles trip, which we will share with 8th grade students and families to get feedback on your preferences.  Please feel free to share any ideas you may have.

I must say it is fun to start thinking about celebratory events that have not been possible for the past two years!

I look forward to seeing students tomorrow,

    Sincerely,

    Jeandré Carbone

    Sellwood Principal’s Newsletter – March 4, 2022

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

As you know, masks became optional outdoors at school as of March 1st.  PPS also announced this morning that masks will be optional indoors and on school buses as of Monday, March 14th.  PPS Communications sent a letter to the community today sharing this news.

    Please remember, after March 14th:

    • It will still be OK to wear a mask.
    • It will also be OK not to wear a mask.

I ask students, families, and staff to respect everyone's choice to wear or not wear a mask.  During the process of writing our mission statement, the Sellwood community expressed a strong commitment to an inclusive environment.  As part of that commitment to inclusivity, we accept and practice empathy toward those who may have different life experiences or who make choices that are different from ours.  To that end, after March 14th, you will see some staff members who are wearing masks on one day, and not wearing masks on another day, as a visible signal to students and families that we honor their individual choices.

Also, here is an update on the Southeast Guiding Coalition (SEGC).  Previously a proposal entitled F3 was to be presented to the board for approval.  However, now it looks like there may be two additional proposals considered.  From what I have seen, each of the proposals being considered would have the same impact on Sellwood’s boundaries and elementary school feeder pattern.  Llewellyn, Lewis, and Duniway would stay as elementary school feeders to Sellwood. The areas that would change from Sellwood to Lane would be between SE 52nd and SE 57th, bordered by SE Duke to the north. Our enrollment would be about 540, which is above the 500 suggested minimum.

Under the currently proposed rollout, in the school year 22/23 any student living in that area could elect to attend Lane if they choose.  In 2023/24 6th-graders (currently 4th-graders) in the area would attend Lane, in 2024/25 6th and 7th-graders would attend Lane, and in 2025/26 all students in that area would attend Lane.  Again, any scenario would still need to be presented to the school board and voted on for approval.  Until the board votes to approve one of the proposals, which will likely happen toward the end of April, changes are always possible.

Finally, we will soon be asking students to choose their electives for next year.  On March 11th, current 7th-graders will be choosing their electives for 8th-grade, and on March 15th, current 6th-graders will be selecting their electives for 7th-grade.  I will send you more detailed information on course descriptions and the forecasting process next Thursday.

    Enjoy the weekend,

    Sincerely,

    Jeandré Carbone

    Sellwood MS Principal

The deadline to submit proof of required vaccinations has been extended to April 20th. If your student is incomplete with a vaccination/s, the MESD immunization department will mail you a letter that states the exact one your student is incomplete on.  You can take that letter, that also comes with a CIS form, to your doctor to fill out and sign after they receive the vaccination. Lease see the attached document:

The easiest way for parents to give us that information, is to just bring in the CIS form/vaccination form or bring in a note from the doctor's office that states the vaccination is now up to date.  One of our secretaries will give the proof of vaccination to the health office.

    Sellwood Principal’s Newsletter – February 25, 2022

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

I hope you are well.  I am happy to report no new COVID cases this week!  It seems that we have really turned a corner.

Here is a pic of a few new bike racks in the courtyard for student use.  We are hoping to get some more installed.  In any case, the courtyard is a nice location that is a bit more secure.  If your child parks their bike on one of the new racks, they will need to dismount and walk their bikes through the courtyard to avoid any potential collisions with students on foot.

    Enjoy the weekend,

    Sincerely,

    Jeandré Carbone

    FROM THE PTA’S JEDI GROUP

Thoughts from the SMS PTA's Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Group

Last night at our meeting, we read the incredible letter from 12-year-old Lonnie Chavis, entitled "America Needs to Change" where he bares his soul about being a Black kid in America.

What vulnerability!  What courage!  We could think of no better way to honor it and him than to:

    Strongly encourage every SMS family

to slow the pace down for 15 minutes

    gather their family together

and take the time to read this aloud

    as soon as possible

The impact of racism is felt deeply by those who experience it and all of our children need to hear about the impact, so that all of our children are moved to protect each other's humanity.

After you have read it, it might be hard to know how to talk about it.

Try scrolling to end of this article from the Anti-defamation League for some ideas.

Here is just one of the useful prompts:

"What did Lonnie Chavis mean when he said, "America Needs to Change?"

Let's make Black History Month matter and thank you for taking action within your family.

    Sellwood Principal’s Newsletter – February 18, 2022

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

Last night I attended the Southeast Guiding Coalition (SEGC) meeting.  As you know, the SEGC has been meeting to review and revise boundaries and programs at the elementary and middle schools in the southeast corner of the district.  Previously, there had been a few proposals that would have moved Lewis to a feeder for Lane rather than Sellwood, which would have slashed our enrollment to about 400.

However, F3, the proposal that will be forwarded to the PPS School Board for a vote on March 15th, keeps Lewis as a feeder to Sellwood.  There will be some slight boundary changes that will shift a small number of students to Lane starting with 6th-graders in 24/25, 6th and 7th graders in 25/26, etc. You can read the summary letter of last night’s meeting here.

Of course, the SEGC’s proposal is open to revision and amendments, and will still need to be approved by the board.

    Enjoy the three-day weekend,

    Sincerely,

    Jeandré Carbone

    Sellwood Principal’s Newsletter – February 11, 2022

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

I’ve just checked the weather report, and I am looking forward to getting outside this weekend to enjoy the warm sunny weather.  I hope all of you have an opportunity to enjoy the sun while it lasts.

As you have probably heard, the Oregon Health Authority plans to end Oregon’s indoor mask mandate by March 31st or earlier, including the mask mandate in schools.  Several parents have asked what that means at Sellwood.  Ending the state-wide mask mandate does not necessarily mean that masks will suddenly be optional in schools.  The decision about whether to make masks optional will be made at the district level, not by individual schools.  PPS will gather input from the community, consult with medical experts, and hold discussions with labor partners before making a decision.  There are a lot of strong and passionate opinions on both sides and district leaders are proceeding with caution.

The good news is that COVID cases continue to drop quickly in Multnomah County and the downward trajectory is expected to continue.

    Enjoy the weekend,

    Sincerely,

    Jeandré Carbone

    Sellwood Principal’s Newsletter – February 4, 2022

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

As you may know, Sellwood has spent the last several months gathering input in order to create a new mission statement that would be aligned with our current vision statement.  We gathered input from students, staff, and parents using a survey, and got additional input from students through discussion during advisory period.  Students shared what they wanted and didn’t want in their learning environment.

We are happy to share our current vision and mission statements.  Keep in mind that vision and mission statements are aspirational and reflect who we are when we are our best selves.

    VISION: (the what/who/end result)

A graduate of Sellwood Middle School will be a compassionate critical thinker, able to collaborate and solve problems, and be prepared to lead a more socially just world.

MISSION: (how we achieve our vision)

Sellwood creates a safe and inclusive learning environment where students build their confidence, practice positive social interaction, challenge racial inequities, and explore their academic interests.

I believe that both the process of creating a vision and mission statement as well as having the finished product to refer to are very valuable.  Defining as a group what you want and how you are going to get there is powerful.

So, in order to help Sellwood students develop into compassionate critical thinkers and collaborative problem solvers, who are prepared to lead a more socially just world - we will need to:

    1. Create a safe, inclusive environment.

    2. Give students ample opportunities to:

    • practice positive social interaction

    • challenge racial inequities

    • explore their academic interests

As a staff we are each making specific commitments to either fortifying the actions we are already taking that are aligned with our mission/vision, and committing to new actions.  We have also asked each student to make specific, individual commitments to contributing to a safe, inclusive learning environment.

Sellwood’s vision and mission statements give me a lot of hope for our collective future.  You can expect to hear about and see them frequently!

    Enjoy the weekend,

    Sincerely,

    Jeandré Carbone

    Sellwood Principal’s Newsletter – January 21, 2022

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

Tuesday will be the first day of the new semester.  While the first semester presented us with many challenges, considering all we have faced, I believe that Sellwood staff, students, and families pulled together as best we could and somehow made it all work.

A few of you have expressed your concern over the PPS and Oregon Health Authority’s recent announcement that we will no longer be conducting contact tracing and notifying families of close contacts, except under a few specific circumstances.  Update to PPS's COVID-19 Response linked here. I hear and understand your concerns.  As someone who has done a lot of contact tracing and looked at the patterns of COVID cases at Sellwood, I wanted to share a few things I have noticed.  Each time we have had a positive COVID case (at school during their infectious period) we have identified any close contacts (within 3 feet of the positive individual for more than 15 minutes) and notified them of their exposure.  The first thing I noticed - about 90% of any students identified were fully vaccinated, and many already had boosters. The second thing I noticed - the identified close contacts didn’t get COVID.  There was no pattern of school-based outbreaks as I had anticipated.

I attribute our avoiding outbreaks to you, our wonderful Sellwood community.  I believe the extremely high rate of vaccination among staff and students to have had a protective affect for all of us, both vaccinated and unvaccinated.  I am truly grateful for that!  One final comment on contact tracing: Omicron has a shortened incubation and contagious period and the quarantine period has been shortened to 5 days accordingly.  Schools often don’t learn of a positive COVID case on campus until after about 3-5 days, due to individuals testing negative a few times before finally testing positive.  This delay had resulted in close contacts being notified they were exposed after their 5-day quarantine had already ended.  If they were going to develop a COVID infection, the individuals would have already started to experience symptoms and become contagious (fortunately, none had).  With the high prevalence of the omicron variant in our community, everyone should assume they may have been exposed and act accordingly.  Be on the lookout for symptoms, stay home if sick, get tested, and make sure you are up-to-date on your vaccinations.

On a hopeful note, the recent COVID data for Multnomah County shows the 14-day rate for new COVID infections dropping by 37%.  OHA believes that omicron has peaked in the Portland area.  This past week, Sellwood did not have any COVID cases (contagious at school) to report, so that was definitely an improvement!

Whew!  That was a lot about COVID.  Next week, I look forward to writing about something else.

I am very much looking forward to the second semester with our wonderful students and staff :-)

    Enjoy the long weekend,

    Sincerely,

    Jeandré Carbone

    IMMUNIZATION DEADLINE APPROACHING

As we continue to urge all eligible students and staff to get vaccinated against COVID-19, we want to remind you about an upcoming deadline for other vaccines that are required for your student to remain in classes. Oregon’s annual “exclusion date” deadline for the 2021-22 school year is Wednesday, February 16. Sellwood Principal’s Newsletter – January 21, 2022

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

Last night I attended the Southeast Guiding Coalition (SEGC) to review draft plans for potential boundary and program changes to PPS schools in the SE quadrant of Portland.  The SEGC has two draft proposals at this time, E1 and E2.  In their current state, both E1 and E2 would change Lewis Elementary from feeding into Sellwood to feeding into Lane.  Our resulting enrollment would be 406, whereas the SEGC’s guidelines for the minimum size for a middle school is 500.  Our current size is about 560.  Obviously, going from 560 students to 406 would have a huge impact on Sellwood staffing and our ability to offer a robust offering of programs and elective classes.

The current proposals are not yet final; they are being reviewed and the SEGC is looking for ways to balance enrollment so that all SE middle schools have sufficient enrollment to provide a robust program. My hope is that they will work out a solution, but we are staying tuned.  Whichever final proposal receives approval by the PPS School Board, it would not go into effect until the 2023/24 school year. It is unclear at this time whether or not “grandfathering” would be in place so that students starting 6th-grade would be able to continue at the same school through 8th-grade.  Here is a link to a summary of last night’s meeting.

Also, the guidance we have received regarding COVID-19 quarantine and contact tracing in schools has changed dramatically with the surge of the COVID variant Omicron.  Read the latest PPS communication (January 14thregarding contact tracing and reporting. Note: these policies may continue to evolve with time.

Next week is finals week, and Thursday will be the last day of Semester 1.  Teachers will have a planning day on Friday, January 28th, and there will be a professional development day on Monday, January 31st.  There will be no school for students on those two days.  You can read the PPS letter about January 31st here.  Second semester will begin on Tuesday, February 1st.

    Enjoy the weekend,

    Sincerely,

A Place for Community: How We Can Support Sellwood's No Place for Hate Program

Each month there will be a specific topic. At the beginning of the month we will provide an article from the No Place for Hate program.  Some caregivers might just read it and think about how to start more discussion at the dinner table.   Others will join us to discuss it online with other caregivers of kids in our school.  Even if you just come and listen, the more discussion we have about how to create caring community for our kids, the more caring our community becomes.  We hope you will join us in being part of the change on the last Thursday of every month.

    Sellwood Principal’s Newsletter – January 9, 2022

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

I hope you enjoyed a restful winter break. It was great to see students and staff on Monday :-)

The pandemic roller coaster continues with the new, dominant COVID-19 variant Omicron, which has added another level of stress for staff, students, and parents.  I have received a lot of questions and concerns about potential moves to distance learning.  As you know, several PPS high schools have moved to distance learning already, and for now the district’s strategy is to move to distance learning on a school-by- school basis if it is no longer safe to conduct in-person learning.  On Friday, PPS Communications sent a district-wide communication outlining their decision-making process.  You can read the letter here.  Please note, if it looks like Sellwood is moving to distance learning, I will communicate that as soon as I possibly can.

To help keep us all safe, I ask that parents remind students of a few key COVID mitigation points.  Please emphasize that children to try to maintain social distance where possible.  This seems to be the hardest thing for young people (and adults) to do.  Students are highly social, but they need to keep some distance at recess and in the hallways.  Students are much better at mask wearing, and will need to continue to be mindful of wearing well-fitting masks over their mouths and noses.  Also key is making sure to replace their masks when not actively eating or drinking. With the increased contagiousness of Omicron, even for those fully vaccinated, health authorities are recommending a mask upgrade to a well-fitting N95 or KN95 mask.

Please help us by reminding your child that if we have indoor lunch, they MUST sit at their assigned table.  Before this past week, we had only had a handful of days with indoor lunch, but since winter break the weather has been very unpredictable and changeable with several days of eating inside.  Students sitting at their assigned tables is essential to contact tracing in the event of a positive COVID-19 case, which I expect to increase in the upcoming weeks.  Their table assignments are posted in their first period classroom and also on the wall at the end of each table.  By now, every student should know their table number, and if they are unsure, we always have the master list and they can ask.

Unfortunately, we have had students sitting with their friends at the wrong tables, which causes a domino effect when students who would like to follow the rule cannot, because their assigned table is full.  Eighth graders were by far the least likely to be sitting where they were supposed to.  It is very difficult for our limited staff to check seating assignments for 140 students during our 15-minute lunch.  Please support us by reminding students the reason for assigned tables, especially if they are in the eighth grade.  We will be checking each time we have indoor lunch, and calling the families of those who are seated at the wrong table.

On our end, we will continue to work hard and do all we can to keep students safe under these trying circumstances.

Thank you for your continued support and everything you do.

    Sincerely,

    Jeandré Carbone

    FROM TEACHER CARLY CUSACK

    Dear Sellwood Community,

As many of you may already know, I've decided to resign my teaching position in PPS. Due to the ever changing demands of the job it's necessary for me to step away at this time.

Over the years I have formed many friendships and experienced overwhelming support from the Sellwood community. Thank you to all the families and students that have spent time talking with me about test scores and proper comma use. The students at Sellwood make the school an amazing place to teach. They are smart, brave, resilient, and sometimes even like poetry.

Thanks for everything and hopefully our paths cross again.

    Best wishes,

    Carly Cusack

PARENT INPUT FOR SELLWOOD MISSION STATEMENT

We are currently in the process of writing Sellwood's Mission Statement.  We have gathered input from students, staff, and families about the language and ideas included in our mission statement.

A mission statement describes the desired conditions or environment put in place, as well as the focus of actions, in order to achieve our vision.

Please keep in mind that Mission Statements are aspirational and describe what and how we want to be when we are our best selves and our best organization.

Please open the Mission Statement Google Form and answer the questions, selecting your top choice of the four potential Sellwood Mission Statements.

SURVEY – CHROMEBOOK TAKE HOME PROGRAM

In fall 2020, Portland voters passed a bond in part to fund a 1:1 Chromebook Take Home Initiative for students in grades 3-12. The Chromebooks were delivered to the school sites this fall. In an effort to support our students and teachers, we are asking for parent/guardian feedback on the PPS 1:1 initiative. Please complete the parent survey by Monday, January 17. PARENT SURVEY

The state of Oregon requires students to receive immunizations against several diseases, and students who do not meet the requirement by the deadline could be barred from attending classes. Read More

    TEST TO STAY UPDATE

As part of our ongoing commitment to increase in-person learning for all students, we are pleased to announce that in partnership with OHA/ODE we will start the Test to Stay program the first week of January of 2022.

Benefits of Test to Stay: Given the lower level of COVID-19 in schools, students exposed at school will have the opportunity to stay in in-person learning and minimize the impact quarantine has had on their education. This is called a modified quarantine and requires students to continue to wear masks during any activity that does not require its use, for example band, athletics, etc., until day eight (8). Students must remain symptom free and will be provided two tests during their quarantine period. You can help expedite the process by signing and returning the consent form for the BinaxNOW rapid nasal swab test, unless you already did it this year. Forms are available in the front office of each school.

For students who were exposed outside of the school day (at home, extracurricular activities, etc), we will have available the Test to Return process. This process will allow students to return on Day 8 after an exposure with any negative antigen or pcr COVID-19 test performed between days 5-7.

As always, vaccinated students who do not have symptoms do not have to quarantine or Test to Stay. We will share more specifics about this program in early January. 5-Step Process for Parents and Families

    PHOTOS FOR OUR YEARBOOK

Parents, we need your help! The publishing staff is rarely able to get photos of our students at their extracurriculars like sports and concerts. If you have a few high-quality photos of our Sellwood students you can share, please go to https://buytheyearbook.pictavo.com/PictavoSchool/FindSchool to start uploading. It will ask you to find our school and establish an account, but they will not use your email for anything (I promise!).

Please note: the yearbook is not for sale yet, but watch for announcements on how to purchase one soon.

    Sellwood Principal’s Newsletter – December 10, 2021

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

Wednesday night, Sellwood held its first band concert in two years.  It was an amazing performance and it was so wonderful to participate in a school community event/celebration.  Mr. Patterson de Tarr’s and the students' hard work was apparent in both the music and the overall presentation.  The performance bodes well for the future of the band program, which is clearly thriving under the direction of Gavi Patterson de Tarr.  I predict growth and continued excellence (after our extended interruption).

Next week, we are thrilled to hold our in-person Winter Marimba Concert in the gym.   We are looking forward to this fun event.  The marimba room is right below my office, and I have been listening to them practice.  They sound excellent!  Each audience member will be required to wear a mask while in attendance.  No food or drink, other than water, will be permitted.  Also, proof of full vaccination will be required at the door (second vaccination dated December 1st or before).  If you plan to attend, thank you for understanding and complying with these safety measures.

    Have a lovely weekend,

    Jeandré Carbone

    SEASON OF GIVING FUNDRAISER

    Hello Sellwood families,

We are in the last few days of our Season of Giving fundraising to support Sellwood families this holiday season.  We have raised $2,535 dollars but still have a ways to go!  If you feel you are able to donate to this cause please do so via SchoolPay.  We will be closing the donation window on Monday 12/13.

    Thank you so much!

    SELLWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL FOUNDATION

We only need 7 more donors to reach 100, can you be one of them??  We at the fondation have a huge goal this year and that is to raise $50,000 during the fall fundraising campaign.  This is our biggest fundraiser of the year, so we want to do what is right by our students and reach for the stars.  We have no idea if this is possible but just like we teach our kids, the best we can do is try our best.  We know there is a lot up in the air right now, but what we know for sure is that more teachers in the school is always a good thing.  Before you start your weekend, if you are in a position to do so, please take a moment to support the foundation.  Every donation counts, and thank you!  Your Foundation Board.

    SELLWOOD READS OUT!

On Friday, December 10th and Saturday, December 11th, Wallace Books will generously donate 15% of sales to the Sellwood PTA (including gift certificates).  Just mention the Sellwood PTA when checking out.  Wallace Books is an independent bookstore located at 7241 SE Milwaukie Ave.  They are open 10am-6pm both days.

Thank you for supporting the PTA and our local small businesses!

This event is in lieu of the annual book fair.

    Thank you.

    Your Sellwood PTA

    TEST TO STAY UPDATE

As part of our ongoing commitment to increase in-person learning for all students, we are pleased to announce that in partnership with OHA/ODE we will start the Test to Stay program the first week of January of 2022.

Benefits of Test to Stay: Given the lower level of COVID-19 in schools, students exposed at school will have the opportunity to stay in in-person learning and minimize the impact quarantine has had on their education. This process will allow students to return on Day 8 after an exposure with any negative antigen or pcr COVID-19 test performed between days 5-7.

    LOST AND FOUND

If your child has lost items, please aske them to go look for them at the Lost and Found in the cafeteria.  We have a pretty big collection of coats and water bottles (see below) and some lunch boxes have perishables inside.  Items that are not claimed before winter break will be bagged and donated (or disposed of).

    PHOTOS FOR OUR YEARBOOK

Parents, we need your help! The publishing staff is rarely able to get photos of our students at their extracurriculars like sports and concerts. SE GUIDING COALITION

As you may already be aware the SE Guiding Coalition (SEGC) has been meeting to develop and review draft proposals to address enrollment and program challenges across SE schools.

The SEGC has created 3 proposals, A, B, & C, all of which adjust enrollment boundaries and shift programs.  All three proposals would shrink Sellwood's catchment area and enrollment to varying degrees.

Below is one of the guidelines for the SEGC:

General programmatic guidelines to accomplish the Board’s Charge

Preferred middle school enrollment above 500 students

Justification:  Small enrollment can result in limited student opportunities

Proposal A. Reduces Sellwood enrollment from 569 to 527. Minus 42 students

Proposal B. Reduces Sellwood enrollment from 569 to 563. Minus 6 students

The last proposal was released last night and would have HUGE implications for Sellwood.

Proposal C.  Reduces Sellwood enrollment from 569 to 405. Minus 164 students

Clearly, 405 is quite a bit less than the 500 minimum.  A loss of 164 students would impact staffing and the programs Sellwood can offer in a MAJOR way.

All three proposals, including maps and statistics, can be viewed at https://www.pps.net/enrollmentbalancing

At the next principal’s coffee, we will discuss the three proposals and I will try to answer any questions you may have.

    Sellwood Principal’s Newsletter – December 3, 2021

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

Thank you to all who participated in parent/teacher conferences last week.  Even though they were still 100% online, there were many productive virtual conversations about student academic achievement and well-being.

It was nice to chat with some of you at the virtual principal’s coffee on Wednesday morning.  The next virtual coffee will be on December 16th, from 4PM to 4:30.  We will be discussing the Southeast Guiding Coalition’s (SEGC) proposed changes to enrollment.  Read below for more information about the SEGC’s three proposals.  The information has serious implications for Sellwood’s future, so I encourage you to review all three proposals.

Next week, we are thrilled to hold our in-person winter band concert in the gym.   The last time we were able to do that was in 2019!  In order to avoid a crowded audience, attendance will be strictly limited to two guests per student musician.  Each guest is required to wear a mask while in attendance.  No food or drink, other than water, will be permitted.  Also, proof of full vaccination will be required at the door (second vaccination dated November 24th or before).  If your child is in band and you plan to attend, thank you for understanding and complying with these safety measures.

    Sincerely,

    Jeandré Carbone

    Sellwood MS Principal

    • Proposal A. Reduces Sellwood enrollment from 569 to 527. Minus 42 students
    • Proposal B. Reduces Sellwood enrollment from 569 to 563. Minus 6 students

The last proposal was released last night and would have HUGE implications for Sellwood.

    • Proposal C.

The SEGC has scheduled an open house on December 8th at 6PM to discuss the proposals.  You can join the meeting at PPS.NET/ENROLLMENTBALANCING Here is the flyer.  At the next principal’s coffee, we will discuss the three proposals and I will try to answer any questions you may have.

    SELLWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL FOUNDATION

We are in the middle of our fall fundraising campaign.  Our goal is to raise 50K in 50 days which will be matched 100%!!  This is a huge opportunity for our school, but it can not be done without everyone's support. So far we have reached 25% of our goal, and we would like to thank all who have participated.  If you have not yet donated, cross something off your to-do list, and give today. Thank you!

    MEET MR. JIM

Using foundation funds, Sellwood Middle has been able to hire a new half-time staff member.  Jim Kelsheimer (Mr. Jim) is with us half-time every day, supporting us with lunch/recess supervision (including setting up sports and recess equipment), distribution of COVID screening tests, hallway monitoring, and general student support. We are so grateful to the Sellwood Foundation for making the new addition to our staff possible.

    SELLWOOD ALL STARS DANCE TEAM

The tryout dates have been scheduled for Wednesday, December 8th from 4:00-5:30pm and Friday, December 10th from 4:00-6:00pm. The goal for dancers is to attend both days, but if that is not possible, then communicate with me and coach Lily and we will work out an alternative tryout with your dancer.

Here is the tryout packet if you would like to get started on reading through and filling it out, but if you don't have access to a printer there will be copies in the office! Link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ok9LmXiC__kPTFAL77Drhx6r6vH8jZjuPOTZFA59MAA/edit?usp=sharing

    Sellwood Principal’s Newsletter – November 19, 2021

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

Next week, the school building will be closed so that we can conduct parent-teacher conferences on Monday and Tuesday, and then enjoy a few days of rest for our Thanksgiving Break on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

This week, I wanted to highlight Sellwood Middle School Foundation’s Annual Campaign.  Please read below to find out more about their 50 Days to 50K Campaign.  Every year, when it comes time to complete the staffing for the upcoming school year, I rely on foundation funds to make sure Sellwood students have a rich selection of elective choices.  With the help of foundation funds, we were able to add Technology and French to our course offerings.  In addition, we are hiring a part-time staff member to help us supervise lunch, set up equipment for recess, and monitor hallways.  Foundation funds benefit all our students and we thank you all for supporting the foundation.

Also, starting December 1st, I will be hosting a virtual Coffee with the Principal twice monthly, the first Wednesday of each month from 10 to 10:30 AM, and the third Thursday of each month, from 4 to 4:30 PM.  Please drop in if you have questions or would like to talk.  Feel free to send me any topics you are interested in discussing.

I hope you have productive conferences and a great Thanksgiving break,

    Sincerely,

    Jeandré Carbone

    SE GUIDING COALITION

As you may already be aware the SE Guiding Coalition (SEGC) has been meeting to develop and review draft proposals to address enrollment and program challenges across SE schools.   They have reviewed two draft proposals, Proposal A (map) and Proposal B (map).  Even though Sellwood is not central to some of the major changes, both plans entail changes to our boundaries which would have implications for some students and would impact our school.

In response to coalition concerns and suggestions, a third draft proposal will be developed to consider other ways to improve equity of access and opportunity at schools that serve both dual language immersion and standard neighborhood programs.  At this time, I do not know what the third proposal will entail, nor do we know when any proposed changes would take effect.  For example, one of the questions we hope to have answered is whether or not any students impacted by boundary changes would be “grandfathered” in to Sellwood, meaning - if they are in 6th or 7th-grade now, will they be able to continue through 8th grade?

The SEGC has scheduled an open house on December 8th at 6PM to discuss the proposals.  You can join the meeting at PPS.NET/ENROLLMENTBALANCING Here is the flyer.  Sellwood will also be scheduling a parent meeting to discuss the three proposals and gather input.

    Sellwood Principal’s Newsletter – November 10, 2021

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

Tomorrow, Thursday November 11th, school will be closed for Veterans’ Day.  We thank all veterans for their time, bravery, sacrifice, and service.  Happy Veteran’s Day! Schools will also be closed on Friday November 12th, so that teachers can engage in professional development. Due to the school closures, COVID screening will not take place this week and will resume next Wednesday.

I wanted to follow up regarding the neighbor who had been offering students ice-cream and behaving inappropriately.  It seems that this (former) neighbor has moved on, as he has not been seen for a few weeks.  His car is gone and the house appears to be unoccupied.  We will continue to monitor the situation and keep our school safe.

Parent teacher conferences are coming up soon.  Please read below for information about conferences (virtual) with a link to a sign-up document along with video instructions.

I hope you have a great long weekend,

HELP US KEEP KIDS SAFE DURING PICK-UP

It has been noted that on 16th Avenue at the end of the day, some parents have been either: parking in front of the crosswalks, blocking all or part of the crosswalk areas, or double parking/stopping right at the crosswalk, blocking the street and kids crossing. Concerned parents have noted a few kids with close calls almost getting hit as they try to navigate this area to cross 16th.

Please help us keep students safe by keeping the cross-walk areas clear, with at least a foot or so on either side to allow clear visibility for both kids and drivers. All parents want to get a close spot at the end of the day and there are a lot of parents finding somewhere to park, but we all should remember to be respectful and mind the rules of parking near crosswalks/intersections to maintain the safety of the kids at Sellwood!

The SEGC will schedule an open house and other community engagement opportunities will be scheduled after the third proposal has been reviewed by the SEGC.  Sellwood will also be scheduling a parent meeting to discuss the three proposals and gather input.

    Sellwood Principal’s Newsletter – November 5, 2021

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

This week we began our OSHU voluntary weekly COVID-19 screening program.   OSHU picked up over 100 COVID tests Thursday morning.  If your child submitted the paperwork to participate in the screening program, but did not receive a test on Wednesday, it is because we have not yet received their test labels from OHSU yet.  We receive the labels in batches, and as soon as we receive labels for your child we will start providing them with a test.  However, we will have some interruptions to the program due to the days when schools are closed.

    •  Scheduling for Closed School Days:
      • Nov. 11 & 12: Thursday & Friday schools will not offer testing this week.
      • Nov. 22 - 26: No test collection during Conferences/Fall Break.

That means, the only additional testing date this month will be November 17th.  We will resume in December for 3 weeks and again after winter break.

As you may know, on Thursday an unlocked bike was stolen from our bike racks (thanks to some quick staff members we did get it back).  On Friday, a completely different person stole several helmets from the bike rack (thanks to some quick neighbors/parents we did get a few of them back).  Please make sure that your child has a strong bike lock.  Also, helmets need to be put in lockers.  If your child can’t put their helmet in their locker, we can collect them at the courtyard door and keep them with the skateboards. Unfortunately, crime has been on the rise in our city, and we all need to take precautions.

Please read below for important information from the Southeast Guiding Coalition and potential boundary changes for Sellwood.

    Sincerely,

    Jeandré Carbone

    Sellwood MS Principal

    Sellwood Principal’s Newsletter – October 15, 2021

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

Thank you to all of you who have enrolled in our voluntary weekly COVID-19 screening program.  We have a had a great response and will have a substantial cohort of students participating.  Right now, OSHU is processing the enrollment forms and so we are waiting for them to send labels and tests so we can begin. This is new for all of us, so we appreciate your patience.

As you know, Outdoor School has been disrupted by the pandemic the past two years.  This year, the current plan for Outdoor School for 6th-graders all schools is to have three days in the fall at school (walking field trip to Sellwood Park on October 20th & 21st), and a three-day overnight Outdoor School experience in the spring (Sellwood is scheduled for May 18th to May 20th).  See below for the overview and also complete the Walking Field Trip Permission form if you haven’t done so yet.

    Have a great weekend,

    OUTDOOR SCHOOL

    2021-22 Outdoor School Model

In consultation with our Teacher Advisory Committee and school health experts, we have determined that providing a 2-part hybrid option for 6th-graders will be the best course of action at this time. Every student will receive the same number of days but it will be split into two parts over the year.

Day 1 – 10/18: Outdoor School Program staff will come to your school site and work with your students on school grounds. This will take place during 1st period.

    Goals: Student Relationship Building

Day 2 – 10/20: Day trip at an Outdoor School Site – Walking Field Trip to Sellwood Park

    Goals: Using scientific practices

Day 3 – 10/21: Day trip to an Outdoor School Site – Walking Field Trip to Sellwood Park

Goals: Develop a scientific inquiry project

    Spring 2022

WALKING FIELD TRIP FORM (if not yet submitted)

It is customary for teachers to take their classes on walking field trips in the school community at different times during the school year. The purpose of such walks is varied. Students may observe neighborhood architecture and urban plants and animals or visit interesting places in the community such as the public library, local businesses and parks.

In order to allow flexibility for these valuable activities, this permission will cover the 2021/22 school year. The trip destination along with a list of students on the trip will be posted in the main office.

Separate permission forms will always be used when any form of transportation is involved or a trip involves an overnight stay or wilderness activity (These types of field trip are not currently allowed under COVID restrictions.

Please complete the Walking Field Trip Permission Form for the 2021/22 school year.
