    Sellwood Principal’s Newsletter – March 5, 2021

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

What a difference a week makes!  Last Saturday, PPS communications sent out an announcement that middle schools would begin hybrid instructions 4th quarter, on March 12th.  You can read the PPS communication here.  Today, Governor Brown announced that all K-5 schools must begin in-person or hybrid instruction in late March, and all 6-12 schools by April 19th.  You can read Governor Brown’s letter here.  We are excited about the return to in-person instruction while recognizing the many challenges we need to navigate.  As you probably know, there are stringent safety requirements that are very necessary, but present logistical challenges.  One of these requirements is 35 sq. foot per person, which results in many of Sellwood’s smaller classrooms being limited to 7 or 8 occupants, including the teacher.  With class sizes of around 30 or more, this requirement limits the number of days we can offer.  However, you can see that Governor Brown’s letter states that the state is conducting “a review of requirements that can better facilitate the return of in-person instruction while also reducing the risk of transmission of COVID-19”.  We hope to see the results of that review soon.  As you can see, things are happening fast.  I have mentioned several times previously in my newsletter that a PPS parent survey was forthcoming.  To my knowledge, there has been a survey for k-5 parents, but we are still waiting for the 6-12 survey.  Sorry for the wait. That information will be very helpful in planning!  Another challenge will be finding solutions to support our teachers with child care responsibilities.  I know many of you have experienced the work and child care balancing act first-hand and it has been very difficult.  In the end, we are going to make it work.  Yesterday, we began Limited In-Person Instruction with 17 students, and it was truly a joy to see children in the building.  I am very much looking forward to seeing ALL students back at school :-)

Please sign up for Picture Day on March 12th.  We had planned to do 1PM to 7PM, but the earlier slots filled up quickly, so we added 20 more time slots between 12:40 and 1PM.  There are still plenty of time slots in the early evening between 6-7PM.  The link for picture day is below.

Also, 6th and 7th-graders, it is already time to forecast for next year’s classes!  On Tuesday morning, I will be sending you a forecasting Google form, an instructional screencast video, and an elective class course guide so that you and your child will be able to make your elective selections.  We will have some afternoon question & answer extra help sessions scheduled as well. Look for my communication about forecasting Tuesday morning.

Finally, we want your feedback.  Please take the Successful School Survey today :-)

    Have a great weekend,

    Sincerely,

    Jeandré Carbone

    Sellwood MS Principal

    RE: STUDENT ACTIVITY FEE

From Claire Howard, Principal’s Secretary and Bookkeeper

School Pay Accounts:  Thank you to the many families who have supported Sellwood Middle School students through donations to our various SMS programs.  It is with your support that SMS continues to offer our students the best educational opportunities even during distance learning.

Here’s the link to our School Pay https://pps.schoolpay.com/                 (Credit/Debit Cards & Electronic Checks Accepted)

YEARBOOK:  'Yearbook 2020-2021' purchase is now open on School Pay for all students in all grades.  Cost is $20.00 per student.  Currently School Pay is the only option for purchase.  For cash purchases: Extra yearbooks, as supply allows, will be available for cash purchase when yearbooks are distributed in June.  If you pay NOW with a credit card or electronic check the quantity needed is more accurate for our order.   NOTE:  Some families pay for a book donation to help our Sellwood families.  If you are doing so, after you pay for your child, open another order page and in the Student Name section put "Donation" rather than the name, put any grade and then include your name as indicated.

STUDENT ACTIVITY FEE:  These funds help all Sellwood students during the year.  If you haven’t already donated, please consider doing so now.  $20.00 Suggested Donation per Child.

Other accounts open for donations (any amount accepted):

    • Math: Will offset some of the cost of graph paper and whiteboards distributed.
    • Art:  Will help offset the cost of art material kits distributed.
    • Principal's Discretionary:  Used to support students.
    • Marimba:  Great program.  Help us with instrument tuning, repair, music and more.
    • Band:  Great program:  Help keep it amazing!
    • Library:  Love to Read?  The Library can always use support.

    Thank you.  Happy New Year!

    Sellwood Principal’s Newsletter – February 26, 2021

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

We are excited to announce that we will be holding our first picture day on March 12th between 1PM and 7PM.  You should have received an email yesterday about Picture Day with a link to SignUp Genius, but I will post the details again below. Slots are filling up quickly, so sign up today! The photos will be used in the yearbook, plus students will get their 2020-21 student ID (finally) and families will have the opportunity to purchase a package.   We will be using a drive through model, where families will pull up on 16th Avenue, students will walk up to the entrance next to the gym on the outdoor basketball court, get their picture card and some hand sanitizer, walk to into the gym, get their picture taken, pick up their ID and walk out the gym exit door.  Only the photographer and two or three Sellwood staff will be inside the gym, and students will only spend about two minutes inside.  All will wear masks, social distance, and use sanitizer.  Only the students will remove their masks for a few seconds to have their picture taken.

If you are unable to make picture day, you may submit your own yearbook picture.  Please submit them through the Pictavo site at https://commpe.pictavo.com/ Search and find Sellwood OR just use our code: 94743.  The deadline for submitting your own yearbook photo is April 2nd.

Speaking of the yearbook, please help us out by sending us any candid or fun photos you have, also to the Pictavo site.  We need pictures, as we don’t have the opportunity to take candid photos at school!

I know that there has been some conflicting information regarding hybrid instruction at middle schools, as well as a lot of speculation.  Unfortunately, I do not have any specific or concrete information to share, except that the survey for middle school parents regarding their interest in hybrid vs. continuing distance learning should be coming to you soon.  You will be receiving information regarding any school opening from PPS Communications, and I don’t want to speak for the district as this is a matter of high importance for students, families, and staff.  Thank you for your patience and I am sorry I can’t say more.

    Have a great weekend,

    Sincerely,

    Jeandré Carbone

    Sellwood Principal’s Newsletter – February 19, 2021

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

It’s been another rough week, with the beautiful snow turning into an ice storm, leaving thousands of families in Portland without power.  We lost power for about six hours and Internet for two days, and I cannot imagine what it has been like for those of you who have experienced a week without electricity.  I am so sorry! On top of the inconvenience and discomfort, more missed school.  I just read that PGE is saying most homes will have power restored on Friday.  I certainly hope so.

Last week I let you know that we have scheduled picture day for March 12th, unfortunately, we have hit a snag in our safety plan approval.  We are still planning to move ahead with March 12th but I will not be sending the final details and sign up link until I get the definite go ahead.

    Have a great weekend,

    Sincerely,

    Jeandré Carbone

    Sellwood Principal’s Newsletter – February 12, 2021

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

I hope you are enjoying the beautiful snow today.  A trip to the dog park is in my immediate future, but for now I am staying inside!

Many of you have asked about student photos and the yearbook, and I am happy to announce that we are scheduling picture day for March 12th from 1PM to 6:30PM.  We will be working with Dorian Studios and they will soon be sending a link to sign up with SignUpGenius.    I will send the complete details next week, but I wanted to give everyone a heads up so you can get it on your calendars.

A few days ago, PPS Communications sent a letter with an update about plans for in-person learning (hybrid) for K-5 students.  Here is a link to that message.  The letter says the following about middle and high schools, Due to space constraints and more complex class schedule considerations, we are not yet ready to share updated plans for hybrid learning for middle and high school students.” So, unfortunately, I do not have any information to update you.

Monday is President’s Day, so enjoy the three-day weekend.  The week’s schedule is posted below.

    Have a great weekend,

    Sincerely,

    Jeandré Carbone

    Sellwood MS Principal

You received a district email on January 15th regarding the administration of the MAP assessment administration purpose which can be found here. The assessment takes on average 45 minutes to 1 hour, but can take a little longer. MAP assessment is the scheduled school time for these days, so when students have completed the assessment they are done for the synchronous part of the day. Teachers may still assign asynchronous work.

To assure successful testing, there will be some things to do at home. It will be important for your child to have access to technology and internet access. A handout and video linked here has been prepared to provide an overview of technology supports, tips and responsibilities for testing day, and additional resources for practice.

    SUCCESSFUL SCHOOLS SURVEY

Tell us about your experience at PPS

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the phrase “successful schools?” We believe that successful schools are safe, healthy and welcoming learning spaces that are inclusive for all students. But, we want to hear your thoughts.
We are excited to announce the 2021 Successful Schools Family Survey. When you take the survey, you help us understand your experience as a parent or guardian. This important information will guide us as we determine the future of our schools. The survey launches today and will be available for the next four weeks.

Take the survey today! You can complete the survey from a computer, tablet, or smartphone. It should only take 15-20 minutes of your time. Select the school your child attends and answer the questions for that school. If you have children at more than one PPS school, please complete one survey for each school your children attend. If you need help taking the survey please contact your teacher or principal.

Thank you for being part of the PPS family!

    Sellwood Principal’s Newsletter – January 29, 2021

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

Monday is the first day of the second semester, and February will be a busy month!  We will kick it off with the Black Lives Matter Week of Action from February 1st to the 5th.  MAP Testing will be conducted on February 10th and 11th.  6th-graders will be engaging in virtual Outdoor School in their science classes between February 16th and March 5th.  Below, you can find out more details about each of these events.

We will also continue to plan for LIPI, Limited In Person Instruction, as described in last week’s newsletter.  Remember that LIPI does not replace distance learning, it is simply additional support in the afternoon for a very small number of 6th-graders.

In other news, on Tuesday, the PPS sent a letter to all families which brought up the possibility of hybrid instruction for middle schools before the end of the year.  Hybrid instruction is a combination of in-person and virtual instruction where students come into school for a few days per week, and attend school online on the other days.  Here is the district’s letter.  It is a long letter, but I especially recommend you read the section Planning Underway for a Hybrid Model of Instruction. Many of you have emailed me worried that your children would be required to return to school, and some have expressed enthusiasm and want to know when the start date would be.  Please keep in mind that hybrid instruction will be starting out with elementary schools.  Many things would have to be worked out before implementing a hybrid instructional model at middle schools.  The letter also re-assures us that if the district implements hybrid learning at middle schools before the end of the year, families who do NOT want to return to in-person/hybrid learning may stick with 100% distance learning.  You will be receiving an online registration form to gauge the interest of families to participate in either 100% distance learning or hybrid learning.  Stay tuned, as the situation is constantly evolving.

    Have a great weekend,

    Sincerely,

    Jeandré Carbone

As you know, in February we celebrate Black History Month.  During the first week of February, Sellwood, other PPS schools, and schools across Oregon will be engaging in the Black Lives Matter Week of Action. Both PPS and the Oregon Department of Education have passed resolutions in support of the BLM week of action.  You may follow the links to read the ODE resolution and PPS resolution.  This email includes important information about the daily bell schedule so that students know where to go in the morning, as well as a family calendar which will allow families to get involved.

    Bell Schedule Next Week

Students will start each day with their 3rd period teacher, just as they did for the SEL lessons during the soft start at the beginning of the year.

To show our Panther commitment to BLM we will begin the day with core lessons. The lessons will be taught by 3rd period teachers Monday through Thursday from 9:30 to 10:10. After the BLM lessons, their regular class periods will begin at 10:15.  The time frames have been shortened for each period to 30 minutes. MAP TESTING,  February 10th and 11th

As we continue through Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL), an important step for teachers is to understand your student’s most essential learning needs. To collect this valuable information, students in grades 3-8 will take Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessments. The MAP assessment is a low stakes test - this means that the results are not used for grading students or for school accountability purposes. If you have concerns about your student participating in this test, please talk with your student’s teacher.

Normally, the MAP assessment is conducted in the classroom setting but, because of distance learning, students will take this assessment at home. At Sellwood, MAP testing will take place on February 10th and February 11th. Younger children may need assistance from an adult in the home. Click here to review a parent guide about this assessment. Your student’s teacher will provide further information about when the test will be given. The district will provide your student’s scores to you following the assessment window.

6TH-GRADE VIRTUAL OUTDOOR SCHOOL, February 16th through March 5th

All Sellwood 6th-graders will be participating in the Outdoor School, Anywhere! curriculum in their science classes the week of February 16th through March 5th. The lessons will be conducted by members of MESD who have planned a series of hands-on science lessons can be conducted at home. See attached letter for more detailed information.

Each student will receive an Outdoor School Science Kit that will be utilized during their instruction. It is important that each student have a kit. Please pick up a kit from Sellwood on one of the following days:

    * Thursday, February 4th from 1-3

    CHILD CARE OPENINGS AT WINTERHAVEN

My name is Sierra Warren, I support Nancy Hauth as the Child Care Coordinator at Winterhaven. Our contracted child care programs are currently operating in 9 schools and many of them are under-enrolled. One of the programs, Art4Life would love to enroll more families at Winterhaven. Because child care is a much needed resource for our PPS families, it is crucial that we spread the word about availability.

Child care programs are a wonderful resource for families, and a great support for students during distance learning, especially for new Kinder families and students with lower attendance rates.

    • Now that Employment Related Day Care (ERDC) has increased income limits to 250% of the poverty rate, many more families are financially supported with most or all child care costs. It is important to note that eligible families must be employed to receive benefits. Refer to this link to access more information.
    • And, please view the PPS Child Care website to find the child care flyer and the ‘Family and Navigator Resources’ tab.
    • Lastly, here is the Release of Information. This document helps families who are in need of a representative to assist in the process.

    Sellwood Principal’s Newsletter – January 22, 2021

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

The upcoming week will be the final week of first semester, with the last day on Thursday, January 28th.  There will be no school on Friday.

I hope you enjoyed the inauguration on Wednesday as much as I did.  It was a moving ceremony and a testament to our enduring democracy, and it was wonderful to see most of our previous Presidents in one place.  I was very relieved that it went smoothly.  Congratulations to President Biden and Vice President Harris! Youth poet laureate Amanda Gorman reading her poem “The Hill We Climb” was a joy to listen to and watch.  I also have to be honest and admit that I was thrilled by the many jewel colored coats, the mittens, the fashion, and the great performances by Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, and Garth Brooks.  For me, the inauguration punctuated a dark and difficult time with bright light and genuine happiness.

I wanted to briefly touch on Limited In-Person Instruction (LIPI).  I have mentioned LIPI previously, and you may have also read about it in the news.  Some of the articles published recently have unfortunately given the impression that schools are about to re-open.  While we are planning to implement Limited In-Person Instruction at Sellwood, starting in March, I must clarify and emphasize the word limited: extremely limited, especially at the start.  Middle schools will be implementing LIPI with a small cohort of 6th-graders, about 10 students total to begin with.  LIPI will not replace distance learning.  Students participating in LIPI will continue to engage in distance learning in the morning and come to school once or maybe twice in the afternoon for two hours of additional support.  As you know, COVID-19 continues to rage and some new, more aggressive strains have developed, so we are being very cautious.  Over time, as more teachers are vaccinated and we show that we can implement LIPI safely, we can gradually increase the number of cohorts.  We are still in the planning phase, so I cannot share more detailed information, but since it has been reported in the news, I felt it necessary to clarify.  After we have submitted our LIPI plan and it has been approved, I will provide more details.

As promised, I have included a link below to our Black Lives Matter Week of Action Family Calendar.  You can also read about the Black Lives Matter Week of Action resolution adopted by the PPS School Board, as well as the Oregon Department of Education Resolution.  Please let me know if you have questions about Black History Month and the week of action.

Directly underneath the BLM calendar, you will find a flyer and an invitation to a virtual PPS parent workshop – Racism in Oregon History.

    Have a great weekend,

    Sincerely,

    Jeandré Carbone

In solidarity we have organized a week-long series of events as part of the national Black Lives Matter in Schools week of action taking place from February 1-5, 2021. The aim for the week is to develop a collective knowledge about the history and importance of the BLM movement through shared learning and discussion, knowledge acquisition and dialogue. The move toward racial justice, particularly for Black people, is critical given the historical legacy of racism. The focus of the week will be to celebrate the brilliance and joy of Black people. Each day we will be focus on key ideas that relate to the Black Lives Matter movement. We want to ensure that families are able to engage in conversation at home about the topics we will begin in school. The calendar below provides you with information about the topic focus, questions for discussion, resources to read, and a question to consider what actionable steps your family can take to move toward racial transformation.

Please follow the link to the Black Lives Matter Week of Action Family Calendar.

    • When: Monday-Friday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

    Sellwood Principal’s Newsletter – January 15, 2021

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

Next week will be a four-day week, as we celebrate the life and work of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Dr. King is well known for advancing civil rights through nonviolent activism and civil disobedience, his famous speech “I have a Dream” at the Lincoln Memorial, and winning the Nobel Peace Prize.  We honor his legacy and sacrifice.  However, there is always more to learn about our leaders, and I want to thank Ms. Bond for sharing this short video: 6 Things You Didn’t Know about Martin Luther King, Jr.  This History.com article also shares a few other lesser known facts: 10 Things You May Not Know about Martin Luther King, Jr.

Although Dr. King was assassinated in 1968, as a nation we clearly have a long way to go in our efforts to secure racial justice for all.  Last week’s hateful images of the Confederate Flag being waved inside our nation’s Capitol, a sweatshirt emblazoned with “Camp Auschwitz”, a noose fashioned out of camera cords stolen from the press, and many other hate symbols and speech put White supremacy on display for the world to see. The comparatively mild response to the mostly White, violent insurrectionists breeching the Capitol by force contrasted dramatically with the much harsher response toward BLM we have seen in Portland and in Washington, DC.  The attack on the Capitol was not only an egregious attack on our Democracy, but a stark reminder of the urgency and importance of working to dismantle White supremacy, while moving forward with anti-racist education.  The work is challenging during a global pandemic and through distance learning, but at Sellwood MS we are trying.

Black History Month is celebrated in February.  As part of Black History Month, Sellwood will be embarking on a Black Lives Matter Week of Action during the first week of February.  The plan is being created by a team of staff and students, and next week we will be sharing the calendar of events to let you know what we are doing and how your family can get involved.  Later in the newsletter you can read the planning team’s introductory statement for the Black Lives Matter Week of Action, which we envision kicking off a Racial Justice Year of Action.

Next Wednesday, we will witness the inauguration of our 46th President, Joe Biden, and Vice President, Kamala Harris.  Kamala Harris will make history as the first woman, first Black woman, and first South Asian woman, elected Vice President.   The inauguration itself will differ starkly from past inaugurations, as it is occurring in the midst of a global pandemic and in the wake of a violent mob insurrection on the very same steps of the Capitol building.  The Capitol mall and much of the area around the Capitol will be closed to the public and 20,000 National Guard troops will be providing security due to ongoing threats.  Historic, yes – but the inauguration has many of us on edge.  I wanted to share the “toolkit” PPS has assembled to support families and PPS staff as we navigate these unsettling times.  Civic Engagement & Unrest: Resilience and Empowerment for the Inauguration and Beyond.  I hope you find it helpful.

I wish all of us peace in the upcoming week and beyond. Enjoy the weekend.

    Sincerely,

    Jeandré Carbone

    Sellwood MS Principal

BLACK LIVES MATTER WEEK OF ACTION:

    Dear Families,

As we reflect on our community’s role in trying to build a space that elevates our students and families of color, and helps our students become anti-racist leaders, we will be intentionally exploring the Black Lives Matter movement over the course of our coming BLM week of action: February 1st - 5th.

We as a school take on this challenge because every one of our students deserves to be seen and supported; and we believe that our actions and our words matter.

Black Lives matter is our future and we need to embrace it from the past year we have had.

FROM CLEVELAND HIGH SCHOOL TO 8TH-GRADERS

Hello 8th Grade Students and Families,

Happy New Year!  We hope that you are well and want to welcome you back to school.  We are already planning for next year and this process starts with helping 8th grade students pick their courses for high school.

We have put together these resources to help you forecast and will offer online help sessions for you if questions come up.  Because your current teachers and middle school counselors know you best, they will be a great resource for questions.

Please start by going to the Welcome to Cleveland High School slideshow. All resources, links, tutorials and help session dates can be found on this slideshow.  Please bookmark it in your browser or make a copy in your Google Drive so you can find it again easily; it should provide all the information you need.

In this slideshow you will find:

    1. Three videos that will orient you to Cleveland High School and the student experience.
    2. A video recording from CHS Counselors that takes you through the slide show.
    3. A link to the Google Forecasting Form where you will make your course selections.
    4. A link to the 2021-22 CHS Course Guide
    5. Dates and links for online Middle School Help Sessions
    6. A link to Padlet for Questions and Answers.  Please ask questions on the Padlet and we will try to answer them as soon as we can.  We will also use the questions on the Padlet to inform our Help Sessions.

The most important thing in this process is to complete the Google Forecasting Form.  This is the way that CHS will know your class selections for 9th grade.

Please complete the Google Forecasting Form by January 22nd.

We look forward to welcoming you to the Cleveland community and hope that we’ve made this process as easy as possible.

    Sincerely,

    Your Cleveland High School Counselors

    Sellwood Principal’s Newsletter – January 8, 2021

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

I wish you a Happy New Year!  Welcome back from winter break.  I hope that your family had an opportunity to rest and recharge, hopefully engaging in some activities you enjoy.

I am sending this newsletter a day early, as I wanted to reach out about the events that occurred yesterday in our nation’s Capitol building.  We witnessed a stunning and upsetting insurrection when, following a Trump rally, a mob violently forced their way into and overran the Capitol. I was saddened to hear about the four people who lost their lives and the 14 police officers who were injured, two of them seriously.  Violence is never the solution and I denounce it, whether at the Capitol yesterday or here in Portland.  Ultimately, this insurrection and assault on our democracy ultimately failed.

I also want you to know that with each traumatic experience we endure (and there have been too many in recent times) I always think about Sellwood students, their families, Sellwood teachers and staff, and the Sellwood community.  I think about about how the Capitol insurrection, on top of the pandemic and other recent events, continues to challenge and stress our community.

Finally, I worry about the impact on our young people, who are also trying to make sense of yesterday’s events.  Sellwood counselors are available to meet with students to talk individually or as a group, as needed.   Since students are distance-learning at home with family, I wanted to share a few resources that provide familial guidance when talking to children.  I especially like the article from Motherly, which uses the acronym PEARLS (prepare, explain, answer, reassure, listen and safeguard) to frame discussions, and can be used to respond to variety of challenging situations.  You may find them useful.

Article: How to Talk to Your Kids about the Breach at the U.S. Capitol, from Motherly

I remain hopeful and positive about our future. Our resiliency is astounding, and I truly believe we will get through this together and be stronger for it.

    Wishing peace to us all,

We will also use the questions on the Padlet to inform our Help Sessions

HEALTH NEWS FROM SELLWOODS NURSE, LEANNE TEIXEIRE

Welcome to 2021!   Thank you to all who have gotten their students' immunizations up-to-date and have gotten the updated records to us!!   Multnomah County Student Health Centers are a good resource to use to get these done before exclusion day February 17th!
    Multnomah County Student Health Centers

Student Health Centers are like having a doctor’s office in schools. Their services include:  sports physicals • regular exam • immunizations • illness or injury • flu shots • COVID-19 testing • reproductive health • prescriptions • lab tests • dental hygiene • mental health counseling. They provide high-quality, easily accessible primary care and mental health services to ALL students in Multnomah County. K-12 youth with or without insurance.

There is never an out-of-pocket cost. There are four of the Student Health Centers currently open while students are engaged in distance learning. The open centers are at Reynolds, David Douglas, Parkrose and Roosevelt high schools. Visit the website at https://multco.us/health/student-health-centers.

    Thank you!

    CHROMEBOOKS

Chromebook distribution is now being managed by the central office at the BESC.  If your child needs a Chromebook or if their Chromebook needs to be replaced, here are the details:

For families that still do not have an available computer at home for students to use, or need to exchange the one they recently received because of technical issues, we have these upcoming opportunities for you:

    • When: Monday-Friday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

    • Where: PPS district office (501 N. Dixon St). Please go to the lower level parking lot, which has an entrance on N. Larrabee Ave.

    • Please bring: Your student’s school ID or ID number. If you are exchanging a device, please bring the device and charger with you.

    • Please be aware: We are asking everyone to use recommended social distancing practices, keeping 6 feet of space between groups and wearing a facemask or face covering, if possible.

    Sellwood Principal’s Newsletter – December 18, 2020

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

Today is the last day before our two-week winter break.  I wish you all a joyous and safe time with family.

In just a few days the winter solstice will be here and the days will start getting longer.  Each year, I feel like solstice marks the turning of a corner, and I look forward to brighter days and more sunlight.  Yesterday, Governor Brown extended the pandemic state of emergency through March 3rd.  However, with the Pfizer vaccine starting to be distributed around the country, and the Moderna vaccine soon to be authorized, I feel like we are turning another corner with this terrible pandemic.  I will be digging deep to summon the patience I need while waiting for this global emergency to end.  It’s going to take some time, but this too shall pass.

I know many of you are wondering about a timeline for the return to in-person school.  Yesterday, principals were told that there would be more concrete information available after the two-week break.  That being said, Multnomah County is still very far from meeting Oregon’s metrics for returning to hybrid or on-site instruction.  Here is a link to the latest version of Oregon’s requirements, published on December 4th.  ODE Metrics for re-opening schools. As you can see from the document, when on-site instruction does begin, it will start with grades K-3, adding grades up to grade 6.  Middle and high schools would only transition to on-site instruction after elementary schools demonstrate the ability to limit COVID-19 transmission in the school environment.  We will await official word from the district office, but reviewing the state requirements indicate that we will remain in distance learning for some time yet.  Hang in there; I know how hard this is on everyone: teachers, families, and students.  We will all continue to do the best we can.

On a brighter note, I want to thank everyone who contributed to Sellwood’s annual Season of Giving fundraising campaign.  We set an ambitious goal of $5000, and we achieved our goal on Wednesday!  The Sellwood community has been very generous during this difficult year.  Due to the hardships brought on by the pandemic, this year has been especially difficult for many families. On Monday (due to a shipping delay), we will be delivering Season of Giving Gifts to 27 families, more families than in any previous year!  The generosity of the Sellwood community will make a big difference for them this holiday season.  A special thanks to our Sellwood counselors: Katie Francis, Susan Cook, and Cara Rutherford, for spearheading the fundraising campaign and making things happen.

Again, I wish you a restful break.

    In gratitude,

    Jeandré Carbone

    Sellwood MS Principal

HEALTH NEWS FROM SELLWOODS NURSE, LEANNE TEIXEIRE

    Immunization news from Nurse LeAnn!

Please continue to send or bring in immunization records to your child’s school.  Though many schools and districts are still providing distance learning, Oregon school law still mandates immunization compliance by February 17, 2021.  Getting your child’s immunizations completed as soon as possible will help to ready them for in school instruction when we return to school buildings.  If you need assistance in locating a health care provider or clinic site, please contact Nurse LeAnn. We know that many routine appointments were delayed during COVID restrictions; so, that is why exclusion letters were sent earlier this year to give parents time to schedule appointments.

"The American Academy of Pediatrics, and its 67,000 members, urges parents to make the decision to immunize... Vaccines are simply the best way to protect our children from these viruses and bacteria that can cause real and devastating harm."  AAP message on immunizations

In addition, the flu vaccination is recommended, "to reduce the burden of respiratory illnesses and hospitalizations of children and youth and to prevent overwhelming the capacity of the US Healthcare system during the COVID-19 pandemic. "CDC on Flu & children

Check with your PCP if having symptoms of COVID-19 but here are some places you can get testing for COVID-19 in Multnomah County:

    Multnomah County COVID-19 testing

    Walgreens Testing

    Zoom Care Testing

Take good care, enjoy your family and keep washing your hands!

Time is flying, and we are only one week from our two-week winter break.  I realize that during distance learning, it has been challenging to keep in touch with the school,  considering the building and main office are closed for the most part.  Email is fine and good, but sometimes you just want to talk to someone, darn-it!  I would like to announce that our two main-office secretaries, who are working remotely, now have work cell phones!  Instead of calling the phones in the building, please use the following:

New phone numbers for the main office!

971-201-6931 – work cell for Melissa Whiteside, Sellwood School Secretary – attendance, email passwords, registration, enrollment, and ParentVue

971-201-5880 – work cell for Claire Howard, Sellwood Principal’s Secretary – regarding issues for the principal or SchoolPay.

I hope that is helpful for us to keep in contact J

    Sincerely,

    Jeandré Carbone

    OSHU Testing info

Take good care, enjoy your family and keep washing your hands!

    Sellwood Principal’s Newsletter – December 4, 2020

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

I wanted to address a hot topic in distance learning across the nation – student web cameras.  I have heard from a number of parents requesting that the school require students to keep their cameras on in order to increase engagement, connection, and relationships with teachers and fellow students.  I have also heard teachers discuss the challenges of engaging and connecting to students when cameras are off and microphones are muted.  Sometimes teachers can’t even be sure that students are still in the room.  Many students tell their teachers that their cameras are off because they are broken.  Please let us know if that is the case, and we will help you get a Chromebook replacement from the district.   I agree that it is a challenge and that distance learning would be more effective and positive if students and teachers could all see and interact with one another.  However, while teachers encourage students to keep their cameras on, schools cannot require students to keep their cameras on.  There are a number of reasons.  One is due to equity concerns; students attend distance learning under a variety of circumstances and there may be valid reasons to keep their camera off. Using a virtual background slows our PPS Chromebooks to a crawl, so that is not a solution for everyone.  For that reason, schools have been told directly that we may not require students turn their cameras on.  Finally, requiring cameras be turned on would not be an enforceable mandate.

That being said, we will continue to encourage students to turn their cameras on and employ strategies that necessitate student visibility, such as demonstrating with hands, or using a mini-whiteboard.  We hope that parents will also strongly encourage camera use.  I would also like to express my appreciation to those students who always keep their cameras on.  What a joy it is to see them, even virtually!

I hope you enjoy some sunshine this weekend.

    Sincerely,

    Jeandré Carbone

    FROM SMILE AND SMBA

Through this difficult year we have all experienced dramatic changes to how we manage school, work, and connecting with others. Like many families, our local shops and restaurants have had to make SIGNIFICANT changes to their businesses in order to keep up and serve the community. These are the small businesses that year after year step up to support our local youth leagues, schools, and the many neighborhood events that keep us connected. Now these same businesses, shops and restaurants need us to show up for them.

Before you spend your dollars elsewhere, please look locally. Many of them have options available for virtual services, curbside pick-up and delivery. Our local businesses rock - they've risen to the COVID challenge, now it's our turn!

The Sellwood-Moreland Business Alliance is launching a Shop Local campaign. We are asking residents to take the pledge and commit to shopping and dining locally. You can find a list of local shops, restaurants, wellness and community services here: https://sellwoodmoreland.com/shop-local.

To remind neighbors of the importance of spending local, we are also encouraging residents to purchase and display a Shop Local yard sign. Signs can be purchased online here or at Oodles 4 Kids, Milieu, and the Bull and the Bee.

Let's show our local small businesses that we want to keep them in the neighborhood!

    Sellwood Principal’s Newsletter – November 20, 2020

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

It is hard to believe we have already reached Parent-Teacher Conferences and Thanksgiving Break.  I don’t know about you, but I feel that time has been strangely warped since last March.  But here we are J

I hope that conferences will provide a good opportunity for you to connect with your child’s teachers.  Most parents that plan to come have already signed up, but I want to make sure that everyone has the information on how to sign-up in case you still need to.

    PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES

    Dear Sellwood families and students,

I would like to begin by sharing our message of support for Sellwood families and students.  During this challenging time as we cope with a surging pandemic, Sellwood teachers and administration acknowledge the important role of parents in distance learning along with all the added stressors placed on families.  In this time of national trauma, we are all in this together, doing the best we can.  We are very grateful for your efforts and partnership.

Sellwood will be conducting virtual parent-teacher conferences on November 23rd and 24th, between 8:30 AM and 7:30 PM.

The schedule for each day will be:

    • 8:30AM-12:30PM
    • 1PM-5PM
    • 6PM-7:30PM

Virtual time slots will be 10 minutes long, and they will be a great opportunity for you to connect with your child’s teacher.  Here are some tips to get the most out of Parent-Teacher Conferences.

    1. First and foremost, have your child attend the conference with you, if at all possible.
    2. Check your computer equipment ahead of time, making sure your camera and microphone work.
    3. The conferences are only 10 minutes, scheduled back-to-back, so be sure to be on time for your appointment.
    4. Before conferences, review assignments, feedback, and grades in your child’s Canvas courses.  Here is a link to instructions for getting observer access to Canvas.  You can also just have your child log on and review the courses directly.
    5. Think about what you are hoping to get out of conferences.  Is your priority to find out how your child is doing in the class, to find out how you can support their learning, or to learn more about the requirements and learning activities planned?  Let the teacher know what you are hoping to get out of conferences.

Below I have shared the sign-up sheet with links, along with a video demo on how to sign up so that you can get started.

Here is the Parent Teacher Conference signup sheet with links to teachers’ calendars.  SIGN-UP SHEET WITH LINKS

Here is the video demonstration for signing up.  VIDEO DEMO

Also, I have had inquiries about how to join the conferences at the appointed time.  You should have received an email with the link and joining information.  The email looks like this:

Also, families who are co-parenting have inquired as to whether it is possible to attend conferences together.  The answer is definitely, yes.  You can invite other participants by sharing the link to the meeting, or by “adding a guest” to the invitation.

I wish you a great weekend and a Happy Thanksgiving!

    Sincerely,

    Jeandré Carbone

Movie Group: Do you love movies?  Let's get together and talk about some!

    Here's how it will work...

    • Every month the counseling team will select a movie to watch.
    • If you are interested in participating you will watch the selected movie on your own time.  You can coordinate with other students to have simultaneous watch parties if you want.
    • At the end of the month we will come together as a group to talk about the movie, share our thoughts, and vote on a movie for the next month.

If this is something you want to do fill out this interest survey. This will also let us know what streaming platforms students have access to and help us narrow down our movie selections.  If you have questions feel free to email Ms. Katie at kfrancis@pps.net.

    Sellwood Principal’s Newsletter – November 13, 2020

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

I hope the first quarter is off to a good start.  Parent-Teacher Conferences are quickly approaching.  I included the signup information in last week’s parent newsletter, and sent an email to all parents and students, but I will also include it here.  If you happen to speak to someone who has not received the sign-up information and is not receiving these weekly newsletters, please have them write me at jcarbone@pps.net.

VIDEO DEMO

I wish you a great weekend.

    Sincerely,

    FIRST MOVIE:

    • Movie for November is Enola Holmes on Netflix
    •  When Enola Holmes (Sherlock's teen sister) discovers her mother missing, she sets off to find her, becoming a super-sleuth in her own right as she outwits her famous brother and unravels a dangerous conspiracy around a mysterious young Lord.  Rated PG-13.

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

I hope you are all well.  With the elections this week many of us are feeling a bit exhausted, and as I type this we still do not have a winner declared for the Presidential election.  I hope we have some closure soon.

Thanks to all of you who completed our first quarter distance learning parent survey (by grade level).  If you haven’t taken it yet, we would love to get your feedback.  Students will be taking surveys designed for them soon.  Here are the links:

  • Principal's Newsletter 10-30-2020

    Sellwood Principal’s Newsletter – October 30, 2020

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

I wish you all a happy and safe Halloween this Saturday.   Clocks will also be set back Saturday night due the end of Daylight Savings Time, so we will enjoy an extra hour of Halloween!

As you know, general elections will be held next Tuesday, November 3rd. Many are predicting post-election civil unrest in Portland, regardless of the election’s outcome.  I plan to stay close to home election night and the day after, monitoring the news and my surroundings.  Please be careful and stay aware of what is happening around the city.

I wanted to remind families about the Sellwood Middle School Foundation’s annual fundraiser; you can find out how to donate on this page.  https://www.sellwoodmiddlefoundation.org/donate.  The Sellwood Foundation raises money to hire more teachers!  This year, Foundation funds are helping to pay for French and Technology electives, so we are very grateful for that support!  Here is a link to an awesome video that was made for the foundation by Ms. Souther’s Publications class. https://youtu.be/jgM_s9zO4Us

Finally, I wanted to let you know that rather than continue with Coffee with the Principal, which in my opinion does not work as well virtually, I am starting to schedule office hours featuring 15 minute individual appointments.  This is still in the experimental phase, and I have not landed on any one specific time of day or date.  There will likely be a morning opportunity, and afternoon opportunity, and an evening opportunity.  Right now I am just trying out the technology.  The sign-up system I am using is exactly the same as the one we will use for parent teacher conferences, so this is kind of a practice to see how it works and to do some troubleshooting.  Please see below, after the Important Dates to Remember section.

    Sincerely,

    Jeandré Carbone

FROM PPS COMMUNICATIONS REGARDING OPENING SCHOOLS

Oregon Revises COVID-19 Criteria for Opening Schools
    October 30, 2020

    Dear PPS Families and Staff,

Earlier today Governor Brown announced that the State of Oregon is relaxing the criteria and thresholds for schools to re-open to in-person instruction, starting with hybrid models that combine distance learning and on-campus learning.

We just received the updated criteria and are still reviewing them. In the meantime, we can tell you this:

    • The metrics for returning to in-person instruction have changed, and they are less restrictive. This includes criteria related to positive COVID-19 cases in Multnomah County (as well as Washington and Clackamas Counties, given many of our employees are residents), as well as test positivity rates for counties.
    • Even with the new and more relaxed metrics, current numbers in Multnomah County would still preclude PPS from opening classrooms to students, either fully or in a hybrid model, until COVID numbers improve.
    • Comprehensive distance learning at PPS will continue through January 28, as previously announced.

Overall, these updated metrics give us a more realistic chance of offering a hybrid learning model or potentially full in-person instruction for students in the second semester, which begins February 2. However, we are not there yet; our county numbers still fall short and we are trending the wrong way. We need your help to change this. We are all part of getting our community’s COVID numbers down. Every time you put on a mask, keep yourself at a safe distance from others, or follow other public health best practices, you are contributing to our ability to bring students back to school.

Until we can offer hybrid or full in-person instruction, we continue to explore opportunities to bring small groups of students to schools for limited in-person activities, following what we have already started with our student health centers, kindergarten and special education assessment sites, and athletics fitness training for high school students.

Throughout all of this, our commitment to student and family supports remains constant and we continue to be guided by health experts as we make decisions in the best interest of the health and well being of our students and staff. We are dedicated to returning students to our classrooms and hallways across the city as soon as we can safely do so.

We will be in touch with a more detailed update next week. Thank you as always for your patience and flexibility as we navigate the pandemic together. We wish you a peaceful weekend.

This week there are two important fundraisers kicking off that I want to make sure you are aware of.  The Sellwood Middle School Foundation is launching its annual fundraiser, and you can find out how to donate on this page.  https://www.sellwoodmiddlefoundation.org/donate.  The Sellwood Foundationg raises money to hire more teachers!  This year, Foundation funds are helping to pay for French and Technology electives, so we are very grateful for that support!  Here is a link to an awesome video that was made for the foundation by Ms. Souther’s Publications class. https://youtu.be/jgM_s9zO4Us

Second, Sellwood’s PTA is holding its annual fruit fundraiser.  If you love apples and pears, this is the fundraiser for you.  See below for more details about the fundraiser, and also how you can join the PTA and get involved.

Finally, We will hold our first Site Council meeting on October 28th, from 8:15 to 9:15 AM.  The Google Meet link is below in the Important Dates section.  We would love to see you there.  This year, the Site Council will be working to write Sellwood's mission statement, and also working on our school improvement plan.

Thank you for all of your support!

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

Thank you for your patience if you were waiting for the new version of our Back-to-School night video, re-recorded due to sound issues.  Of course, not being a video editor, I had technical trouble and had to buy special software to convert the various video formats.  I learned a lot though, and finally finished it! Here is a link to the document that has all of the Back-to-School Night videos in one place: the all-school introduction video with a message from PPS board member Andrew Scott, as well as links to teachers' videos.

Tomorrow there is no school due to the State In-service Day, and progress reports will be coming to you sometime next week.

I hope you enjoy the long weekend and get outside before the rain begins.

    FROM THE LIBRARY

    Hello!

This year, our library is offering The Panther Read Aloud Book Club at lunch time.  This project will start in October and will run for three books worth of time.  The idea behind it is very simple; teachers around the world read the same book aloud to their students. It is a free project and it fits perfectly into the Oregon School Library Reading Engagement standards.

During the project, our class will be reading Prairie Lotus by Linda Sue Park, This is My America by Eugene, OR author Kim Johnson , and finally Indian No More by Portland, OR. born author Charlene Willing McManis with Traci Sorell. We will be reading and connecting with students around the world who are reading the same book.  We will use google meets through the Sellwood Middle School Site with the door for Laura Axon.

Monday: 6th Grade: 12:15-1:00 Sellwood Middle School Site

Tuesday: 7th Grade: 12:15-1:00 Sellwood Middle School Site

Wednesday: 8th Grade: 12:15-1:00 Sellwood Middle School Site

We are very excited to connect with others, especially since millions of students participate all around the globe every year  This project will allow for our students to use technology tools in a meaningful way, as well as learn about other cultures, all while listening to a fantastic read aloud.

If you would like more information about the Global Read Aloud, feel free to visit the website www.theglobalreadaloud.com or I would be happy to answer any questions you may have.  I look forward to starting this exciting project with your child, as well as seeing the connections we will make.

    All my best,

    Laura Axon

Also, don’t forget that every Thursday, form 1-3PM  Sellwood's Library will be distributing and collecting “Let’s Get Reading” book bags.

    PTA Fruit Fundraiser

Calling all Sellwood PTA supporters and apple and pear fans! During the month of October, we will be hosting a fruit fundraiser and selling freshly picked and amazing tasting boxes of apples and pears from Kiyokawa Family Orchards. This local orchard from Parkdale, Oregon is known for its excellent quality fruit and a reputation for supporting local nonprofits, like the PTA. This is one of our largest fundraisers, given that we are able to purchase the fruit at cost. Last year the PTA raised close to $2,000 and we ask for your support given this is one of the few fundraising efforts that we can continue during COVID. Stay tuned for more information to get your order placed.

    Greetings Sellwood Community,

This Friday, I will host my first Virtual Coffee with the Principal event.  It will be from 9-10:00 AM.  I plan to hold to hold the coffee with the principal event twice monthly, on the first and third Friday of each month.  As the year goes on, the frequency and time of the meeting may change, depending on participation and feedback.

Coffee with the Principal will take place as a Google Meet.  You can use this code to join:  meet.google.com/hoi-hsnb-dwa

If you have any particular questions or concerns you would like me to address, I ask that you email me in advance, so that I can make sure I have any relevant information on hand.  I look forward to seeing you there!

Also, you and your student should have received an email from me on Friday about our new internal website.  The site will be a convenient place where students can go to access the “Good Morning Sellwood” livestream, the Sellwood Website, the PPS Middle School Bell Schedule, all of their Google Meets, and more.  As this is an internal site, it is only accessible to students and staff logged in with their PPS emails.  Please watch the screencast below the “important dates” section to see how it works.

Please make sure your student has opened my email and bookmarked the site on their bookmark bar.

Many of you have shared questions and concerns about the PPS Middle School Bell Schedule.  I want you to know that I have shared those concerns with senior leadership.  Yesterday, you should have received an email from PPS Communications with clarifications regarding the middle school bell schedule.  In case you did not receive it, I have pasted the letter at the bottom of this newsletter.

Finally, we are re-recording the all-school presentation from Virtual Back-to-School night and will share it tomorrow.

RACE, RACISM, AND RACIAL EQUITY RESOURCES

All Students Need Anti-racism Education, article by Christina Torres, Teaching Tolerance, July 30, 2020

September 25 Update: Clarifying Expectations for Middle School Instruction

    Dear PPS Middle School Families,

We apologize for the confusion many students and families are feeling with regard to middle school schedules and expectations for distance learning instruction. We have worked with educators and administrators throughout this week to come to a more clear understanding related to middle school learning experience, and want to make sure you know what to expect as well.

The middle school schedule is designed to give students opportunities for teacher and peer connection throughout the week and to make sure they are supported and challenged by meaningful work that matches grade-level standards.

    • Monday to Thursday: Students work directly with teachers online from 9:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
    • Friday: Students meet with all of their classes live in whole or small groups; or engage in asynchronous learning; or meet with teachers during office hours.

Each type of learning is outlined below.

    Whole-Group Instruction

    • Teachers are expected to provide whole-group instruction Monday/Tuesday, and may choose to also provide whole-group instruction Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, depending on students’ needs.

    Small-Group Instruction

    • We know that middle school students need opportunities to connect with other students, and small groups provide this.
    • Small groups provide an opportunity for teachers to get to know students better.
    • Small groups are designed to: 1) reinforce learning, 2) provide additional instruction for students who need re-teaching or extensions. Groups will vary based on student need.
    • If teachers are leading small-group instruction during a period, they are expected to provide applied learning work for students who are not part of that small group or groups.
    • Students will have the opportunity for peer-to-peer connection during small-group instruction.

Whether teachers use small-group instruction, whole-group instruction, or office hours during the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday periods, they are expected to cover all priority standards for their subject that have been identified by the district.

Asynchronous Learning Occurring During Scheduled Class Periods

    • Asynchronous learning should be aligned to the learning outcomes from teachers’ live lessons.
    • During asynchronous learning periods (designated Periods 1-6 or 1-7), teachers are available for electronic communication with students.
    • If a teacher is leading small-group instruction during a scheduled class period, they are expected to provide standards-aligned asynchronous work for students who are not expected to participate in small groups.

    Office Hours

    • Teachers should offer at least 30 minutes of office hours for students per week.
    • Teachers have flexibility on which day to schedule office hours.

    Advisory/Small Group Instruction Block (1 to 1:45 p.m.)

    • Schools with advisory use this period for advisory. Schools without advisory offer instructional intervention and extensions.
    • Teachers work with students directly or are present synchronously for student contact during this time.

    Applied Learning (afternoon)

    • Students are expected to be engaged in meaningful, standards-based work assigned during their synchronous periods (Periods 1-6 or 1-7).
    • To make sure teachers can focus on giving feedback to students and engaging in professional collaboration, they are not expected to be able to respond to students synchronously during this time.
    • Students will never be assigned to participate in unsupervised groups as part of applied learning.

As always, thank you for your patience and flexibility as we work with our school leaders and educators to continually improve our comprehensive distance learning offering for all students in all grades.
