Emily Walker
My name is Emily Walker and this is my first year as the school counselor for Portland Evening & Summer Scholars, although you might recognize me because I've worked the last four summers at Summer Scholars. Prior to that, I spent the last three school years working as a school counselor at Parkrose High School. Over the last ten years, I have worked or interned at over ten schools across the Portland area doing practically every job you can imagine in a school.
I'm a proud Benson High School graduate, and was even a Summer Scholars student between my junior and senior year. I attended Mt. Hood Community College, The University of British Columbia, Lewis & Clark College and I'm the first in my family to graduate from college. I decided to become a school counselor because frankly, I had very few school staff in my life that I felt cared about me as a student, my social-emotional wellbeing, or what barriers I was facing when I was younger. I want to help make sure no student I come into contact with now has the same experience I did. I also became a school counselor because I realized it was the best job you can have within a school to help improve equity, and advocate for the academic success of all students.
In my spare time, I like to travel (I've been to or lived in 11 countries so far), attend Portland Timbers games and rock/heavy metal concerts around town, listen to comedy podcasts, and spend quality time with my cat Friday. Feel free to ask to see a picture of her when you see me in person.
I'm excited to come back to PPS, be a part of the PESS team and I am looking forward to having a great school year with you!
