GMS Community Meeting and Input Opportunity

We want to invite parents and students to attend a community meeting where we will explain the process for selecting the next principal and to get your ideas and input. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 19, 6:00-7:30 pm in the school cafeteria.

The community meeting is the first step in our principal hiring process. At this meeting we will explain the hiring process and describe an opportunity for parents, staff, and students to be represented on the interview team that helps select the next principal.

Also, at the meeting, we will ask you about the most important qualities you want in your next principal. Your input will help inform how we select the top candidate for your school. You can also provide your input by completing the survey through this link:

    https://ppsk12.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0ptJk4wlaEJQjTn

If you cannot attend this meeting but you want to give your thoughts about selecting your next principal, or if you have questions, you can contact us through our Administrative Assistant Andrea Atherton, aatherto@pps.net.

    Amazing Alexandra Diaz!

We were so proud to host Pura Belpre Honor Award winning author Alexandra Diaz in two assemblies last week. All students were able to see her presentation, and learn about her book called The Only Road (or in Spanish El Unico Destino). This book is one of our Oregon Battle of the Books titles for middle school this year. We also hosted a small group with a few of our Spanish speaking students to meet, greet, and ask her questions in Spanish. It was really special, and many of our students are now excited to read her books. This memorable experience was funded through our TAG department. Please ask your student about it, and learn more about her book here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LSmgOhJ-7Y

Exclusion day for state required immunizations is Wednesday, February 19th.  Students who are not current will not be able to attend school until their records are complete.  Please arrange for your child to receive needed immunizations so that they can remain in school. If you need assistance in locating a health care provider or clinic site, please contact your school nurse. Thank you!

    Security Upgrade at George

Throughout PPS, the district is making security upgrades and details can be found here. Starting this week, George MS’s main entrance is kept locked except during the morning arrival time. Parents, students, and visitors now must push the button located on the wall to the left of the front door. Our office staff then uses a video system to see who is requesting entry prior to electronically unlocking the main entrance. All other exterior doors are kept locked throughout the school day. Additionally at George, the public address system speakers have been upgraded.

    Cell Phone Reminder

Our cell phone policy for students is a simple one: Off and Away. From the start of the student day until dismissal students are expected to keep their cell phones off and not have them out at all. While nearly all students follow the cell phone policy, we sometimes have to address the cell phone issue with individuals. In these situations, cell phones can be confiscated, turned in to the office, and made available for pick up at the end of the day. If parents need to communicate with a student during the school day, it’s important to contact the office.

    Winter Weather Update and Procedures:

If you have questions, please call PPS Transportation Services at 503-916-6901. The district has two options in the event of bad weather: Delay school openings for two hours or close the schools altogether. Before deciding which to do, district officials consult with local meteorologists, city transportation officials and PPS transportation staff in the field. School delay and closure information is relayed in a variety of ways:

PPS sends text alerts to families, students and PPS staff who have opted in to receive SMS text alerts on their cell phones. If you are a parent or guardian, a student or a PPS staff member, you can opt in to receive texts by texting YES to 68453. You can read more about texting and the district's "Mobile First" initiative.

An automated phone call is sent to affected families.

The district has a Twitter feed to relay closure, delay and emergency information.  You may create an account at www.twitter.com. Follow @PPSConnect.

Information is also posted on the PPS website, submitted to the media, and posted on the PPS Facebook page.

Snow routes and alternative stops will be called for AM or PM or both depending upon the road conditions or weather forecast. Please pay close attention to additional District announcements throughout the day for changes. District decisions made after the initial call with be updated to the same media outlet.

Individual school decisions: The district may close or delay schools at higher elevations while keeping schools at lower elevations open. For example, Skyline, West Sylvan and Forest Park might open two hours late with all other schools opening on time.

Makeup days: The Board of Education has built into the calendar up to three replacement days in the event of school closures.

Two messages from Our School Nurse: Lori Elder BSN, RN

    1. Letters were mailed last month to parents whose children have incomplete immunization information. If you received this letter, please provide requested information as soon as possible. The school nurse is available to address any questions that you may have or to help identify a health care provider.
    2. Flu season is here and it’s never too early or too late to get your flu shot. The flu shot remains our best defense against contracting the flu. The County Health Department provides the following information about the flu: https://multco.us/health/diseases-and-conditions/influenza The flu is a contagious disease caused by influenza germs.  Flu can lead to mild to serious illness, and can sometimes lead to hospitalization and death. Flu is spread from person to person by coughing, sneezing, talking or singing. Adults and children should get a flu shot each year. Flu vaccine is very safe. You should also stay home if you are sick. Cover coughs and sneezes, and wash your hands frequently with soap and water, or use a hand sanitizer to avoid getting sick.

SUN Showcase/MultiCultural NightPlease join us for some fun and entertainment at our  SUN Showcase/Multicultural event. Dinner is provided and we will start at 5:30 on Thursday, December 12.In conjunction we will also be hosting a Clothing Give Away. We hope to see you there!!!

We appreciate your partnership and encourage you to contact us with questions, appreciations, concerns, or information to share. Take care.

    ESPAÑOL

Hola familias de la escuela George

Feliz febrero!

Sigue a @PPSConnect.
