Classroom placement information for the 2024-25 school year is not currently visible through Synergy/ParentVue as we are continuing to receive new enrollees and are working to balance classrooms effectively.
We plan to have final class placement information available for viewing by Tuesday, August 20th (with the exception of Kindergarten--please see Kindergarten section below).
New Kinder families, please mark your calendar to meet classmates and other families and have some fun on the Laurelhurst Playground. Monday, August 26th from 3 - 4pm.
All kindergarteners and their families will participate in Kindergarten Ramp Up between Tuesday, August 27th and Friday, August 30th. The Ramp Up includes a one-on-one meeting between each kindergarten family and a teacher and a one-day orientation for kindergarten students. Families should make themselves (including their student!) available from the 27th through the 30th for the meetings and orientation.
All kindergarten students will start with their full classes on Tuesday, September 3rd.
Next year's start and end times will be different.
All students will start at: 8:45
Elementary Student Release: 3:15
Middle School Release: 3:30
With the end of the school year upon us, many families are wondering who their teachers will be next year. We will share class placements with you mid-August.
6th-8th grade families, we are collecting student Chromebooks on Thursday, June 13th. Please check to see if you have any PPS chargers at home and send them with your student to turn in.
Don't forget to come check out the Lost and Found items. All the jackets, lunchboxes, water bottles, caps, and sweatshirts will be outside near the playground. Find your stuff!!
All items not picked up by the end of this week will be donated to the PPS Clothing Closet.
Please remember to return all school library books this week! Books can be dropped off in the library and to the box on the bench at the front of the school. If, after looking high and low, you cannot locate a lost book, please pay for it on SchoolPay.
PLEASE PICK UP MEDICATION from the health room by Friday, 6/14.We have stock epi pens on hand, so there is no need to wait until the last day to pick those up.
Per district policy, all medication left at school must be picked up by parents/guardians or be destroyed at the end of the school year. We hate destroying unexpired epi-pens and unused medication, so please help us get your medication back to you for the summer!
If you have any questions, please reach out to Kelly Fischer, Laurelhurst's School Health Assistant, at kfischer@mesd.k12.or.us . |
MESD Health Centers are open this summer and available to all students! There are two health centers open over the summer months. No insurance is required, they do ask that you call to make an appointment. These health centers assist with well child exams, illness/injury care, immunizations, sports physicals, and mental health services. Check out the attached flyer for more information |

I hope you had a wonderful summer. This summer I was truly unplugged for most of July. My family and I spent a week camping at the beach and two weeks in Yellowstone and Grand Tetons. We ended our summer with some down time in Sunriver. Now, as I get ready for the new school year, I am once again filled with gratitude to be at Laurelhurst and to work with dedicated staff, amazing students, and supportive families.
Speaking of a hardworking and committed staff, a big shout out to our custodians Zach, Tony and team who have worked so hard this summer to prepare our school for the new year. Our classrooms, hallways, cafeteria, and learning spaces look fantastic! We also have new ADA features around the school so all of our students can access spaces (sorry, still no elevator).
Thanks to Mary and Dennis Hodge and their amazing crew at CertaPro for their generous donation to our school. We now have sport and game lines painted on our playground. Our students are going to love playing there!
There are a few changes this year—an extended school day for all students, a new middle school schedule, early release days, and new staff members. Below you will find staff introductions, a few key dates, and other important information. We will continue to update you as we learn more about back-to-school details.
With Gratitude,
Alyson
When Beckham Weatherby picks up his tuba, the rest of the world falls away.
“I don’t get that nervous and I don’t get stage fright at all,” he said. “I guess I got lucky with how my body reacts to performing in front of crowds.”
Which is something the McDaniel High School junior has done quite a bit of lately. Not only is he a member of the prestigious Portland Youth Philharmonic (PYP) and the PYP conservatory orchestra, but he recently earned first prize in the tuba solo performance category at the Oregon State Solo Music Championships.
The first things you notice when you walk into Ellie Jensen’s classroom at Boise-Eliot/Humboldt Elementary School are peace and warmth. Then you hear the laughter of children. Then you just might see two posters hanging on the walls that tell you a great deal about the kind of teacher she has been for the past 50 years. The posters simply say, “Leave a little sparkle wherever you go” and “Be a friend.”
Jensen, known as “Miss Ellie” to the hundreds of students she has taught in her half a century as a Portland Public Schools educator, can’t help but light up a room. And she is a friend to all children.
We dare you to drive by the Mainspring Food Pantry on the corner of 82nd Avenue and Fremont and not do a double take. Or a triple take.
Students from McDaniel High School’s art-focused Career Technical Education (CTE) class have spent the last four weeks turning the exterior walls of the pantry into one, huge, joyful mural as part of the course’s exploration of climate justice and community engagement.
A little over 30 years ago, a Madison High School student named Joseph Janson had a simple wish. He wanted to go to a dance. But nothing was simple for Joseph, who was born with Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy and was confined to a wheelchair.
He confided his wish to Tony Nitz, who at that time was an educational assistant at Madison (now Leodis V. McDaniel High School). Tony had been working one-on-one with Joseph for months and he immediately went about making the young man’s dream come true.
“The truth is, I would have done anything for Joseph,” Nitz said. “He was a unique person, and we had a very special bond.”
