SUN Spring Session is coming to a close this Thursday, the 25th of May. We will be having a celebration with students to close out the school year. This has been an incredible journey working with George’s students and families all year long.
We would like to cordially invite George students, families and community to our Multicultural Night on May 31st, 2017 from 6PM – 9PM. We will have a carnival, live entertainment and a variety of food, fun, and amazing prizes ranging from $20 - $600 in value. There will also be a small Clothes Closet at no cost for all those who come.
Dear Parents and Community Members,
Welcome to the Mock Trial competition and Constitution Team showcase sponsored by Classroom Law Project! It is with great excitement that I continue my 6th year of coaching students in PPS in this worthy endeavor.
Mock Trial is a statewide academic program in which middle and high school students compete in a simulated courtroom trial. This year 7th graders have a trial called “The Case of the Hazardous Homework”. This case deals with a student who is injured doing a Science experiment. His family decides to sue the school district. All students have been assigned roles, from lawyers to witnesses and court reporters. They have been hard at work, and we look forward to a great performance on June 12th (5th period) and 14th (4th period) in our school library. Trial times run from 1pm-3:30pm. Please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to attend as a spectator in the audience, or as a jury member.
Constitution Team is an 8th grade simulation of an actual Congressional Hearing. In this, 8th grade students are studying one unit from We The People, and preparing answers to important thematic questions. Their hearing takes place on June 9th, from 1-3:30. I am looking for judges for this as well. You will be provided with a set of questions to ask students, and will give them feedback on their answers. This competition has taken our two PPS high schools: Grant and Lincoln to national finals, where they compete with student teams from all over the country.
I am glad to answer any questions you have, feel free to contact me for further details. If you plan on attending in any capacity, let me know!
Sincerely, Ms. Solomon and the 7th/8th grade AVID classes.
Atentamente, Sra. Solomon y las clases de 7o y 8o grado.
Dear George Community,
Welcome to 2017
As the saying goes time flies when you are having fun, and this year is truly living up to it. We have already completed 40% of the school year and are ready to march through the next 6 months accomplishing all of our goals set forth at the beginning of the school year. As I always I say it is a group effort to get our students where they need to be, and you as parents play an integral role in that process. Working side by side we can ensure each and every one of our students meets or exceeds their goals, and grows both academically and social-emotionally throughout the process. Transitioning back to the routines of school can at times be difficult for us as adults, but also for our students. If your child is having trouble getting back into the routine of school and you need assistance, our counselors are only a phone call away to assist in any way that they can. To ease the transition here at school we are revisiting our schoolwide CARE expectations with all of our students, as well as reiterating classroom expectations to ensure we are all on the same page after our long period of being away from school.
Winter Benchmark Testing
Winter Benchmark testing will begin shortly. Benchmark testing is a means of measuring student skills in basic academic subject areas. The student is given brief, timed exercises to complete, using materials drawn directly from his/her academic program. Results tell teachers how individual students are progressing in the areas tested and they provide grade level and school-wide benchmarking information. Please contact your son or daughters Language Arts or Math teacher to review and obtain results of their winter benchmark assessment results.
PTA Meeting on February 8
As a reminder our PTA is having their PTA meeting on February 8th. Dinner will be served at 5:30pm, and the PTA meeting will start at 6:00pm. February 15th is our PTA fundraiser event at Burgerville (8671 N Ivanhoe St.) Come have a burger or a milkshake! 10% of the night’s proceeds come to the George PTA, which supports our students, families and community!
Can you volunteer for an hour? We need hosts for this event! Use our contact page to let us know! http://georgepta.weebly.com/ . These are great events that our PTA sponsors to raise funds for your children, as they support initiatives like our Breakfast of Champions, the Crew Competition, as well as end of year activities. Please consider donating or attending to assist in supporting our MS PTA, and in turn supporting your child.
Unified Sports Team Wins!
On Saturday January 28th, the George Middle School Unified Basketball team played a tournament at Forest Grove High School. Along with three amazing para professionals, one speech pathologist and one special education teacher, this team paired extraordinarily capable students with disabilities with positive, helpful middle school partners and created a beautiful team. We played three games which tied us for first place. We brought home the blue ribbon for our George Mustangs! Our students showed so much heart, compassion for others, teamwork and joy! It was a pleasure to witness and be part of. All of the kids were so wonderful! They are stellar, selfless individuals! Well done George Mustangs Unified Basketball, well done!!
New Unified Sports Elective
We are excited at George Middle school to offer a new elective class for students third quarter, Unified Sports. Our George Students will help to promote Social Inclusion through Sport Special Olympics through shared sports training and competition experiences with our George Focus classroom students. Unified Sports joins people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. It was inspired by a simple principle: training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding. In Unified Sports, teams are made up of people of similar age and ability. That makes practices more fun and games more challenging and exciting for all. Having sport in common is just one more way that preconceptions and false ideas are swept away.

At the end of every school year, the
School-family Partnership program sponsors Student Recognition Award ceremonies
for successful students across the district. These award ceremonies are
essential to honor and reward students whose achievements represent the best of
PPS, and to inspire their fellow students in the coming school year. We’re
excited to celebrate these students and are looking forward to sharing their
stories with you.
Please congratulate all who participated. They all were fantastic and made Benson Tech proud!
Hello PPS families and staff,
On April 4 I presented my proposed budget for the 2017-18 school year to our School Board. I want to make sure you know what our spending priorities are, and what they will mean for you and your PPS student or students.
This is a budget of difficult choices. We made extra cuts to central administration to prioritize direct services for students, but we still must make some painful cuts to our schools. Although the cuts will affect each school differently, they will be noticeable. This proposed budget is the first step in a long process, and we will be seeking your input and engagement as we manage this difficult fiscal climate.
CORRECTION: 2nd budget listening session is Tuesday, April 25
We want to hear from you about the 2017-18 budget for PPS! The Portland School Board has scheduled three listening sessions to take your comments on how we should allocate our dollars in the coming year.
